Nunchuck-movement? Ho boy, without one of those poorly designed wireless nunchucks, I see the major potential for some cord breakage.

EA, Nintendo... you do realize with motionplus you're going to need a broad range of motion to swing like you're swinging a tennis racket, right?

not really, unless you're really exaggerating the swinging. I haven't played NPC Mario Power Tennis (and if reviews of that and previews of this are true, I may never) but I heard that if you use the Wiimote only, you moved with the D-Pad. I'd love to see that option in this game

Well, tennis IS a hard game, some sort of learning curve should be expected. With accurate and responsive controls they can require more precision from the player, which can only make those down-the-line winners more gratifing when you manage to get a perfect shot in.

The casual crowd doesn't want anything requiring real skill or a learning curve. That's why this is destined to fail. They want a shallow experience that will let them feel good that they're good at the game so fast.

It would be destined to fail if they were required to use WMP... since it's easy enough to remove, it'd still bring in some of the casual.

IGN raved about WMP in Tiger Woods 2010. Joystiq, did you guys get to try that one out?

I really think 1:1 motion is going to be one of those things that people thought they wanted in gaming, but which reality will show not to be the case.

Developers are going to have to be just as judicious with how they implement this as they should be with any other kind of motion control in games. The notion that the wiimote is somehow "broken" without it is false; it has limitations, but what's mostly broken is developers not using it properly.

Ugh, here we go again. Joystiq.dot.com doesn't like something that's made by Nintendo. No surprise there. You guys are so lame. I bet it works fine(the w m +).

I've found that Wii Sports Tennis at least was already a fairly realistic experience in terms of hit mechanics. Forehand, backhand, lob, and smash all seemed to work like they should.

I agree, but I'd like a bit more of realism on how far the ball goes. When I just move my wrist a bit, i'd like to see a ball close to the net, and when I smash, I'd like to see a smash. In Wii Tennis, both moves can give the ball the same speed/make it land in the same spot.

So let's say I'm happy with the moviments, but not so with the intensity.

The moves worked okay in Wii Tennis, but it didn't really seem like the game truly knew what you were doing - more like they'd analysed all of the moves you might do so that the game would be able to handle that kind of input, but it wouldn't necessarily know which was which. It's a while since I played, but I'm pretty sure that if your character was in the right spot for a backhand, s/he always did a backhand shot even if you swung it forehand, for instance. Probably that was on purpose just to make it easier, but...

Also, there was actually quite a steep learning curve on the way it worked based on timing - the direction of the ball didn't depend on what direction you held the 'racquet' when you hit it, only the timing. Same sort of thing was true for the serves - if you wanted to smash it, you had to hit it at just the right time, not just do a 'smash' gesture. (There are logical reasons for both mechanisms, I'm just saying.)

Basically Wii Tennis worked well because the game was pretty forgiving. It sounds like in this game, they've made it rather less forgiving when using MotionPlus - there's no real reason why that has to be the case, though (i.e. it could still let you hit it even if you swing at slightly the wrong time or direction or whatever).

Shame there's no Tennis 2 in Wii Sports Resort (afaik) but I guess that leaves the market open for third parties like EA.

So basically, if you're actually any good at tennis, you will probably love the game, while those who have no enjoyment when it comes to the actual game and probably wouldn't buy the game anyway will blame their sucking on WiiMotion+ "not working quite right."

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd love a much more realistic tennis game that could help keep my swing in shape during the extremely long Minnesota winters that basically mean the normal tennis season is a whopping 3 months long.
