Thomas Menino, who has served as mayor of Boston for nearly 16 years, is one of the most intriguing political figures in the gaming realm. He first antagonized the gaming industry in 2007 by endorsing a Jack Thompson-authored bill that would treat the retail practices of mature games (as deemed by the state) like the retail practices of pornography. It failed miserably, and we doubt any of the many Boston-based game studios sent him any fruit baskets to console him.
In the midst of this political blunder, Mayor Menino announced he was interested bringing more game developers to work in the city. We thought it was solely a political soundbite -- but the city recently formed an advisory "Steering Committee," composed of local industry figures, to inform the mayor on how to bring further game development to Boston. In addition, the city launched PoweringUpBoston.com, which provides info and resources to Boston's game studios and potential new developers. Wicked Ahhhsome!

I hope this actually works - I'd love to move back to MA and have more options than 3 or 4 for places to work...

ugh. menino and patrick. together destroying our city and state. I am betting that this committee will fail miserably as most of this pair's policies have.

Stupid mayor. Doesnt he know that having more of those interactive moving pictures in his city will only increase the number of murders, rapes, and jaywalkers? Clearly, this is a bad idea that will only lead to a significant decrease in his city's population. I know this is a fact because Jack Thompson told me so

Mayor Menino is the country's first "For Life" mayor. You stink and I don't like him. No matter how cool he's acting now towards game development.

I can't say i know much about Mayor Menino, but im pretty sure there have been plently of for life mayors in the US. Hell, there have been damn near multiple life terms (that sounds wrong doesn't it) in Chicago. Mayor Daley anyone?

Menino is a f*cking douchebag, and I live near Boston.
But it would be nice to see game development in Boston.

Screw you Tom, with the ridiculous business taxation, no companies -- whether they're videogame companies or not -- are going to be moving into Massachusetts to do business. Further, the state is bankrupt, we shouldn't be wasting time forming anymore sinecurial steering committees to spend money on.

While the state may be facing a large deficit, as far as I know the city of Boston (which is where these funds come from) is actually doing ok. If he can use this money to bring more game companies to Boston, it would create more jobs and more tax money for both the state and the city of Boston.

please please please game developers stay away from Boston I lived here all my life and can tell you they will tell you great thing but as soon as your company gets in here they will tax the crap out of you. The mayor or as we all like to call him (mumbles menino) is a decent man but this is called taxachussettes for a reason.
