For an almost two-year old game, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare still possesses an uncanny amount of pluck. It's become a bellwether for judging modern first-person shooters, and still regularly places high in the Xbox Live activity charts. However, Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling recently revealed the most convincing testimony of the game's success while accepting CoD 4's three BAFTA Awards in London earlier this week -- according to Bowling, the game's online multiplayer component has played host to just over 15 million players.
Bowling clarified that 11 million of said players joined CoD 4's ranks via Xbox Live, while over four million entered the fray on PSN. He didn't even mention how many PC gamers had gotten their war on, though we're sure that when combined with the console players, CoD 4's total online population would rival that of many average-sized countries.

It probably wouldn't function well as an average-sized country though, as the only thing its citizens have in common is a desire to kill each other, and frankly one Somalia is enough.

Well, they'll spend the rest of their time spamming the voice channels with sexual, racial or homophobic slurs.

You do know that plenty of people share Xbox 360's and their games right?

It's more like, Bob. Bob joins a clan... Bob. And then all his friends are like.. That's so cool. Let's make new accounts and add to the beginning of our names. We will look so cool.

Ah, but also keep in mind, the highest offline to online ratio game is still a bit of a tie between Mario Kart DS and Halo 2. And both go over 50%. So there are tons of copies out there that hasn't even touched an online server.
So these numbers, no matter how you try to shoot them down, is an achievement.

It's actually suprising - did you know that very few people actually play newer games online (on PC)? For example, Counter-Strike Source has about 200-400k people playing at any one time, whilst the original Counter-Strike is in the millions.
These numbers are mostly due to the fact that older games that run on older hardware are very popular in developing countries, where expensive PC components and consoles aren't readily available.

this is very true really, just take a look at Starcraft, Diablo and compare them to any modern FPS or RPG online (mmorpg's not included)...
There's even still strong online presence for Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Age of Empires 2....
too many games are a flash in the pan, or try too hard to become a franchise, this hurts online gaming.... no one wants to have to keep paying 60+ dollars every year for a few changes.... when the original is doing just fine..

I'm a bitch, here is why:
I owned COD4, and I never once played online.
I know, I know. It was when I first got my 360, and I ran through the excellent single player and enjoyed it. But I had so many other games on my backlog (since this was early 2008) that I just traded it in to get caught up on the plethora of other great 360 titles.
This is a problem. Why? Because I can't make myself buy it again, even though I am really itching to get a new online shooter. I can't make myself drop 54.99 for the damned used copy at Gamestop. It's two years old! Left 4 Dead rules, and Far Cry 2's multiplayer doesn't completely make me want to kill myself. But I know I would love COD4 online.
So what is a Jerk Face to do? I mean, I just wait until Modern Warfare 2, right? I can make it eight or nine more months..

Don't feel bad. I had it for 5 months on PS3, played a grand total of 20 online matches. I love the single player but didn't care for the multiplayer. Meanwhile I have 200+ online matches on UT3.
For me, I love vehicles and arcady feels to my online shooters. One of the main reasons why I don't feel a sudden urge to drop coin on Killzone 2...

Either try to Goozex it (I love that service... got a copy of Yakuza 2 coming in...), or check your local craigslist. If you REALLY need COD4, I've seen tons of copies hit my local Craigslist for $30. Hell, I got my copy of Fable II for $25 from a Zelda fantard who tried to lecture me why the game sucks WHILE SELLING ME HIS COPY!

You are much better not having played COD4 online. The singleplayer was superb but the online was stale and tired. TF2, Farcry 2, Shadowrun, Unreal Tournament 3, Left 4 Dead, etc etc are all far more fun online and actually bring something new to the table or have a unique thing going for them.
Don't even bother man, nothing has changed in the Call of Duty series since 2 other than the singleplayer (which is always great).

I'd say sign up for Goozex and trade your games in there and use the points to request a copy of COD4. I put my referral link below.

One game doesn't belong in the list. Here's your clue to guess which one it is: It included dwarves, trolls and magic. In fact, this game felt unfinished and the final product felt more like a beta than a full retail release.

Ugh... if they made a REAL Shadowrun game, it would be GotY... it has such potential.... I friggin loved the SNES game. The short time that my friends tried to get me into D&D in high school, we played a couple games of Shadowrun, and it's so friggin cool. Best cyberpunk universe ever, and they had to go and make a team deathmatch game out of it. It still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, to this day.
