Resident Evil 5 'Versus' DLC dated and priced in Japan
If you're a member of the enraged masses protesting the pricing of Resident Evil 5's 'Versus' DLC pack, which adds new online co-op and competitive options to the game, we doubt this news will do anything to soothe your frayed nerves -- Capcom recently revealed the DLC's price for Japan: 160
on Xbox Live, or ¥250 on PSN. That's less than half of the North American cost for the same content.
However, if you're still planning on picking up the additional modes, you might be interested to hear the Japanese DLC received a release date that's far less vague than our "in a few weeks" release timetable -- Japan will be able to participate in immobilized online combat as of March 26. Why the disparities in pricing and dating in the two regions? We're not sure -- though we suspect some sort of zombie trade tariff is involved.

Capcom: "We believe North American gamers are suckers. We'll charge less elsewhere and they'll still buy our 108kb unlock code."
Shmil @ Mar 14th 2009 1:44PM
yeah, we don't like "firsting" here. Some editors consider it a bannable offense. Just thought you should know.
Bowser Rogozhin @ Mar 14th 2009 1:53PM
Downloadable content is going to destroy our hobby, no question about it. More releases will become ever more fragmented till it reaches the point where we start paying incremental amounts for each new stage, stages which, I might add, are forever locked down to the particular system/account; stages which are non-refundable and unlendable; stages which are digital and, therefore, inferior to a concrete product.
DS/PSP (iPhone?) aside, this is pretty much the worst generation, just when we came off from the greatest generation. It's like comparing the World War 2 generation to the baby boomers who ruined the world with greed, debt and global warming, and now those born post-1986 are forced to carry the filthy can.
ronald.raygun @ Mar 14th 2009 2:10PM
if that becomes the case, they can expect me and others to pirate more. and that's just what i will do
Sir Buzz Killington( The Artist formerly known as Jakka) @ Mar 14th 2009 2:32PM
Except that we're now at the two opposite ends of the spectrum with PC gamers pirating under any excuse they can find and Console gamers getting constantly fucked in the ass because DLC is pretty much invulnerable to any kind of piracy.
I agree with Bowser, but sadly there's nothing we can do about it because ,if the existence of DLC and the sales of Horse Armor are an indication of anything, even if all the smart hardcore gamers refuse to buy it, the remaining 70% of stupid casual gamers will do so and ultimately make it profitable.
Vcize @ Mar 14th 2009 2:32PM
Quit making asstarded assumptions.
Chances are that if DLC exist, this versus mode and stuff wouldn't exist either. They probably made it SPECIFICALLY because they knew they could charge for it, and wouldn't have put in the time to make it if they didn't have the option to release it as DLC later.
But hey, you go right on making your stupid assumptions about stuff you know nothing about, and you can go on being happy whining about everything.
It's not like they're taking stuff out that's been in past RE games and charging for it, and it's not like RE5 isn't a more than complete game with more stuff than any past RE's as it is.
Vcize @ Mar 14th 2009 2:33PM
Whoops, that should say "if DLC didn't exist..."
Bowser Rogozhin @ Mar 14th 2009 2:37PM
"Chances are that if DLC exist, this versus mode and stuff wouldn't exist either."
A versus mode, as implemented here, goes against the spirit of the mainline, Resident Evil franchise. So, no, it shouldn't exist.
As for the rest of your comment, Vcize, I don't understand what you're on about. Too much sambuca?
Tiptup300 @ Mar 14th 2009 2:42PM
No it won't, DLC is a great thing. Some people just hate change.
Sir Buzz Killington( The Artist formerly known as Jakka) @ Mar 14th 2009 3:10PM
Damn...I meant THIS DLC, not DLC altogether. DLC is great when you don't nickel and dime it.
t3kni9e @ Mar 14th 2009 3:31PM
Here's the thing Sir Buzz that makes you comment kind of backwards... If anything the hardcore are the ones buying it as they are HARDCORE. They're the ones who want it really bad while the casual games tend to find all these things a waste of money. Infact alot of casual gamers don't even have a gold account.
I personally think paying $15 a month for an MMO game is completely stupid but you have millions of hardcore gamers paying to play WoW.
Simply put, these payed for DLC is aimed at the hardcore, not the casual...
Saria the Cat @ Mar 14th 2009 3:34PM
Why is it every comment I read by you is an intense doomsday rantfest?
Just because something involves change, doesn't mean it's "the death of gaming as we know it."

"A versus mode, as implemented here, goes against the spirit of the mainline, Resident Evil franchise. So, no, it shouldn't exist."

yeah i just checked the playstation store. the number one download is one of the street fighter costume packs.
lasersanchez @ Mar 14th 2009 4:28PM
Ah yes, goes against the spirit of the mainline quest. Unlike Mercenaries, which is totally in the spirit of RE's main quest.
Levi @ Mar 15th 2009 10:14AM
OP:
I still have not seen a game where an expected portion of the game is chopped off and sold as DLC. I reiterate my point from before that these modes were never in any Resident Evil game before, so this is a very bad example to use as a game being "fragmented." The ONLY reason people are complaining about this is because of the timing. If this DLC did not exist, NOBODY would be saying "WTF?? No VS mode?? This game is so lacking a VS mode!!"
I'm not saying I support it, I'm not saying I disagree that it is a "slippery slope," but I AM disagreeing with all who say that this is a feature that should have been included from the get-go. The game is just as complete as Resident Evil 4. It is missing nothing to be the complete package it was before the DLC was announced.
Jacksons @ Mar 15th 2009 4:22PM
Agreed that this is the worst generation aside from PSP/DS 100%. I've never had so many unfinished games sitting on my shelf. It's usually due to a moronic storyline that tries to be serious but fails miserably. There's been a few with some good comedy, though. Those get finished and replayed.

You're little bit there made reading all the shit above your comment worth-while.
As for the DLC issue, I think there will always be some sort of "line" the developers can't cross, when it comes to how much they can charge and how many things actually become DLC instead of being with the game in the first place.
e.g. if they started charging for the extra costumes and Mercenaries mini-game, people would have good reason to outcry because those "features" came with previous games for free.
In the end, it all depends on how the market reacts, which is true of any industry/business. Of course, one can help influence the market, but rather than simply bitching about it, it may be more effective to educate consumers. Like creating some sort of community that tracks and reports on DLC.
Levi @ Mar 15th 2009 10:38AM
Sooooooo pissed he's not in RE5.
If Capcom released the merchant from RE4 as a DLC patch for RE5, I think it might be the best selling DLC ever. I'd buy it.... at a high price.
I was the merchant for halloween one year lol... got the idea cause I could do a good impression. It was a hit. The only guy that had a better idea (though it wasn't executed as well as I thought it would) was to dress up as a douchebag - The shirt, the popped collar, the beer... Only thing I think he could've improved on was if he did his hair up in the "dragon ball z"... you know, where it looks like you put a tube of grease in your hair and then put your face next to a jet engine. *Bing* I just got the off-topic trophy.

Capcom well I don't know this is the second time they do this but they've offer so many good things in the past is hard to hate them.I think I dislike more the fact RE:5 is getting a MPM it didn't need.

I have yet to purchase any DLC for any game, and don't really plan on doing so anytime soon. I'm also the kind of person that would never pay a monthly subscription fee for a game that already costs money, has huge corporate coffers and are dealing in sums of money that I can only dream about.
What used to be a case of releasing mods, patches and updates that lured players into playing your game after release has turned into a cash farm of half-finished games that are nickel and diming us for content that should be available upon release.
Games now have DLC planned before the game is even finished... why not just throw it in the damn game already?
kornation @ Mar 14th 2009 3:50PM
I have bought DLC, GTA's TLAD DLC is well worth it, but others....
Skate 2's unlock all? Horse armour?
Its Monkey business as they know its virtually impossible to try before you buy on these, its even more diabolical when said data is on the disc already, and just unlocked....
We need the rom hackers of the day to go through these discs and shine a light on what's in and out of these disc, and show up such gems such as Hot Coffee, 'Unlock DLC' (should be a free cheat, like its been for the last 15 or so years) & Street Fighter IV's DLC costumes already being on disc controversy's,
My opinion? send the disc to the company and ask for a refund as all wasn't given for the cover price, if you really want the game, re-buy it second hand, and enjoy the extra few bucks you saved while not letting the original company have your sale...
Hit the pocket, it hurts there..
Rocks @ Mar 14th 2009 6:02PM
yeah, i may have spoke to soon, DLC like GTA4's I'd consider more of an expansion pack.... they actually went in and created a new story, characters, ect.... I'm talking about things like: Unlockable costumes, new game modes, a map pack, in game items, ect....
like you said, paying for stuff already on the disc that you already paid for is just ridiculous. I will no longer be supporting Capcom if they continue practices like this.
Of course , this won't really effect them in anyway, but I'll gladly give my money to another developer that cares about their customers. All i can see in Capcom's eyes at this point is $$$$
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Mar 14th 2009 11:30PM
i dont buy alot of DLC because i feel like most of it is the companies nickel and dimming us. DLC like GTAIV's is fine, it's extra that came out well after the release of the game and falls into the category of 'continuing support' or 'expansion pack'. same with a map pack here or there a couple months after release of the game as interest starts to fall off, but if they are pedaling $5 DLC two weeks after the game releases, then i feel like that was content that was probably already done but cut to charge for later. what that says to me is, "we really wanted to charge you guys $65 for this game." so DLC is fine with me as long as it falls into the category of 'continuing support' ala Motorstorm, Burnout Paradise, and The Lost and Damned.
