The second installment in Bioware's series of video documentaries for its upcoming MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic, reveals how the developer is planning on viciously and irrevocably hooking subscribers. Instead of tapping into whatever mystical, stat-driven formula World of Warcraft has divined, Bioware is focusing on getting players to become invested in the overarching stories of their characters, hoping that players will create "their own personal Star Wars saga."
The documentary gives a brief example of how this will work -- each class will apparently have their own hundreds-of-hours-long storyline to pursue, aided by cinematic pseudo-cutscenes and major, story-altering decisions the player will be forced to make. Check out the video after the break!

This game I am a little concerned if it will come to be what I expected. But I think that Bioware is gonna do an awesome job. I think I might go Bounty Hunter though if I do get the game. Cause out of the hundreds of thousands of Jedi I'll be one of the few the proud the Bounty Hunters.

They better set a low level cap. Otherwise I feel that a lot of this work will go to waste as player won't be able to maintain a couple of characters at once.
Something on par with WoW would be great, seeing how in that game everybody seems to have at least one level 70 character.

WoW's original cap was 60, TBC kicked it up to 70, and near the end the amount of exp needed and the amount given by quests was decreased and increased respectively.
Personally, I'm not too interested in the game. Bioware makes decent-to-great single-player RPGs, but I doubt they have the capability to actively update and support an MMO. There was supposed to be a lot of DLC for Mass Effect, and so far, we have one, with plans for a second while ME 2 is already announced, and how long has ME been out?
And the way they are handling the game, its turning out to be more of a single-player game you have to pay monthly for on top of the $50-60 for the game. They've been adamant about making sure you can solo, giving npc allies, and this quote;
"each class will apparently have their own hundreds-of-hours-long storyline to pursue, aided by cinematic pseudo-cutscenes and major, story-altering decisions the player will be forced to make"
Only solidifies that to me.

Is it actually confirmed at this point?

Lenekko, like I said, I'm not too interested in the game. I would love to try a star wars MMO, but since the only one out is SWG, and that is way out of it's prime, I glanced at this one, but seeing the developers made me doubt it.
Besides, you can't quite say it will be like GW's RMT system. We don't know what they will offer, or how mandatory said things will be in the scheme of things. Besides, I tend to detest RMT anyways, so that's just another notch against it to me (though considering how heavily single-player-based the game is, that might be insignificant)

Point taken, im just hoping its like Guild wars' system, as the games system is almost perfect in my eyes.
All though, i would like the game to be all on one central server, instead of just the city's with instancing for the questing, but that may just be the 3 years of WoW messing with me.
I am hopeful, and I wish they post some UI game play soon, and not just clips of battles, talking about the story.

To be fair, Sei, while Bioware does only really have experience with non-massively games, their devs have had experience in setting up game systems that are playable by groups at a time over a LAN. They are also intimately familiar with the subject matter (from KotOR of course) and with roleplaying games in general. On top of that, they do have plenty of examples of successes and failures in the MMO market, such as, yes, World of Warcraft, a game that was built on the basis of an RTS engine by a company that had not actually made an actual RPG in the past (and no, Diablo isn't a pure RPG, it's a hack-and-slash action game with a few RPG elements to it).
With the long history of successful MMOs from companies that never before made MMOs, and the long history of successful RPGs from this particular company, I am very optimistic indeed. Only three things worry me: that the resultant experience might suffer the same way Warhammer Online did, with people trying to find the fastest way to max level and ignoring all the work that went into each class' storyline; that there has been no description of the "end game" material (a vaguely strategic massive galactic wargame would be cool); and that there has been no mention of two people with different characters being able to play together through the game. NPCs are nice and all, but I'd like to be able to group with one or four people semi-permanently, for the classic RPG experience.

As someone whose entire XBL profile is written in Mandalorian and has dozens of clone and mandalorian action figures, I agree wholeheartedly.

I would want to play as an ewok or zabrak. I've read many of the side books and seen the movies and my favorite characters from the universe are darth maul and wickett. I also like General Grievous but I'm not sure if he would fall under a kaleesh (original race before he was bombed) or a droid. Either way I would probably want to be an ewok first and a sith of some sort second.

You know I had the same thought a few weeks ago.
My problem is that for some reason I try to stick to the neutral, charismatic, opportunist but the problem is that rarely RPGs allow you to do that, most of the time you end doing quests for the bad guys or for the good guys there is no neutral stuff.
Hell in Fallout 3 my neutraly stood with me until level 6 then I was a good character even when I sold people to the slavers.I got Best,Last hope for humanity without breaking a sweat.

Yeah Esc I agree, no MMO has ever really let such a thing happen, you have to either be white or black, no grey area at all. But I figure since they DO have a bounty hunter class there is a hope for a character who plays purely as an opportunist. If anyone can make it happen it's Bioware. I'm willing to get my hopes up for this game.

Any words on a Mon Calamari race? I'd love to just run around shouting ITS A TRAP then kill 30 battle droids.

Oh my god. I can see it now. There's gonna be a star wars equivalent of the barrens in the old republic spammed with "it's a trap." Eventually people will warn newcomers about going to the star-barrens, saying, "don't go! it's a trap!" Eventually one giant "its a trap" black hole will emerge and suck not only the game universe into it, but ours as well. We're pretty much screwed.

I would really like to see this game come out for the PS3. Considering that the PS3 supports keyboard and mouse it could certainly work on the platform even with a subscription fee. I'm sure it could work on the 360 as well but I wouldn't want to pay for the game, live and a subscription fee. However, I'm sure if it were to come to the PS3 & 360 that MS would release some sort of official keyboard to play the game with. I guess the success or failure of DC Universe Online, Free Realms and The Agency will go A long way to help EA decide if the PS3 is worthy of a port as well as Age Of Conan on the 360 if it hasn't been canceled.

They haven't said if this game will have a subscription, many suspect it will take a different route, which I really help turns out to be true. But even so, Final Fantasy XI doesn't require a Gold membership to play online and supports USB keyboards.

Snowblind,
Thats really good to know. I thought Gold was required to play all 360 games online but I guess thats different with select titles which is a good compromise. I guess I just assumed it would be a subscription model because it's an MMO.

Bissy, as far as I know, Gold is only required for certain perks. The basic online features is, to my knowledge, a Silver option, and thus free. Of course, I don't have my own 360 yet, but that is my understanding of the situation.

Silver members can only use Live for downloading arcade games and demos, etc. If you actually want to play a game online, you have to be a gold member. Although I agree, giving silver members basic online play would make a lot more sense. Just don't let them acess ranked matches, etc.
Final Fantasy XI is the only exception of this so far, just because it would be a little unreasonable to epect people to pay the live fee ontop of the games monthly fee. But I'm sure Champions Online and whatever other MMO's are released on it will be the same though.

Well, I'll never give up hope on an actual third KOTOR however desperate and unlikely it may be, but it really looks like Bioware will actually be able to bring a real engaging story to an MMO
