Co op would be a nice add on. But this generation has been filled with that. In other words, if it has co op then it automatically gets good reviews. RE 5 is a perfect example of that.

The save system was a huge problem for me. If you werent going to be playing for long periods of time then it becomes a hassle playing the game at all. I'm surprised I even finished.

Co-op and save anywhere are two things that should be borderline mandatory in games by now.

We have all this cool stuff to see people online when they're playing something else, invite them into games, etc. And then if you're playing a game that doesn't let you save anywhere you can barely use it.

That's why I've barely played any RPGs this gen. I got tired of getting invites to Gears/CoD rooms that I wanted to get into but had to wait 15-20 minutes to get to the next save point first, only to have those rooms be full by the time I was finally able to save.

@Vcize

You make a good point. Saving anywhere should be in every fucking game. But i'm not too sure about co op.

I play my video games at work, without xbox live. If every game was tailored so that you HAD to have someone playing with you contstantly, I would be one bored employee. Co op is a nice add on to a game but I don't want it to be a must have in every game.

@Extinction

So you would rather stay with the with the horrible save system instead of one that makes the game less of a hassle to play? Your probably one of those Resident Evil fans who actually defend those horrible controls, right?

I'm not big on save anywhere. Most games lack challenge if you can save anywhere, unless you make it a challenge by creating a rule for yourself, like "only one save per 20 minutes" or something. Then of course you can run into problems where you save it and seconds later you die. Hope you had multiple saves, sucker. And keeping multiple saves is just annoying. Naturally, this situation can be solved by the levels being designed with "safe" areas, which begs the question of why not just make those "safe" areas checkpoints and be done with it?

Another possible issue is with pacing. Checkpoints give a player a sense of pacing and let them have a "I'll play to one more checkpoint" feel. Save anywhere makes the levels feel like they drag out and you don't have a good idea of where it's going to end. This can also lead to the classic "I have one rocket left and I'm not going to use it until I need it" syndrome.

Really, if levels and checkpoints are done right, save anywhere looks clumsy by comparison.

@Toro

Having co-op doesn't mean it has to be designed for co-op. That's one of the things I dislike about developer's views, they feel like they have to work the co-op gameplay into the story. That's great for games that do it, but games that don't shouldn't just do it altogether. Take GTA4 for example. Instead of a couple lame missions designed for co-op that last all of 20 minutes, why not just make the single player game exactly the same as it was in terms of cutscenes, story, etc but when the actual gameplay comes up you can have another guy walking around with you? He never even has to be mentioned by any of the other characters, as if he's not even there, but let us use him in the actual gameplay.

@Anam

No one ever complained about lack of challenge in Bioshock or Mass Effect and both had save anywhere features. Hell, both had checkpoints to go along with them that you could use if you wanted to.

Also I disagree on pacing. Checkpoints are the devil because 90% of the time they're done in a screwy way. You might have 3 checkpoints in 10 minutes of gameplay and then not another one for 35 minutes. Also you often get left with checkpoints after long cutscenes, or a tough battle that comes 5-10 minutes into a cutscene so every time you replay it you have to wade through the other 5-10 minute easy part first.

Same thing with having an end point, I feel exactly the opposite as you. When I am done playing I want to be done playing, but no I have to drag on or rush through another 15 minutes that I'm not going to enjoy as much because I am at the point where I don't feel like playing anymore. Also there are times where I want to just go a little bit further, maybe check around the next corner, but I don't want to get started on a whole other checkpoint that I have to play all the way through and end up quitting earlier than I would have liked. Long story short, I know when I want to stop playing the game, I don't need the developers to tell me when to do it.

I should clarify that I am referring to shooting/action games when I condemn save anywhere. Mass Effect (and Bioshock, to an extent) is an RPG and you should absolutely be able to save anywhere because you could spend half an hour talking to one person then die.

Bioshock was called easy in the Gamespot review and I've heard people call it easy here. I personally thought it was okay, but I also suck at dual-analog controls.

Most of your complaints seem to be with a poorly implemented checkpoint system. Sure, anything can be poorly done. That doesn't mean that checkpoint systems are always bad or that save anywhere should always be implemented. It's like saying that every game should let you fly because jumping puzzles usually suck (and they do). If you had good puzzles, you wouldn't want to fly. If you had good pacing, you wouldn't want to save anywhere.

If you want a couple of examples of what can be wrong with save anywhere, here's some bits of my experience:

Half-Life - Played through most of the game, got bored on a level that seemed endless and quit the game. Little did I know I was about 5 minutes away from the end. Damn, would've been nice to see that.

Bioshock - Saved it somewhere, can't figure out how to get out of where I am. Eventually quit, watched amazing twist on youtube. Cool game.

Aside from those problems, some of the best challenges I've had in action games came from games with checkpoints, most notably Goldeneye. While save anywhere would have certainly made protecting Natalya less frustrating, I can't help but think my memory of that game would be "good game, too easy" rather than "best game I've ever played, still haven't beat it."

Sure, I could limit myself on save anywhere to accomplish the same thing, but the feeling of accomplishment would be jacked up.

I didn't realize how much I wanted a non-adversarial versus mode in a survival horror / action game until Crapcom decided to charge an extra five-spot for it!

First DMC4 going multi platform, now this hubbub over DLC... They've gone too far, and I refuse to enjoy their high-quality products that are sure to provide me with endless hours of sheer bliss.

I repsect your opinion itty but you know Capcom used to release their games with a lot of kickass aditional content but since DLC kick in yo they have been abusing it and charging stuff that were part of the game.

Yeah MP mode is a bad idea for a game like RE:5 in fact I'm kinda glad is separated from the game but the damn title update always make me feel that if I don't get a 100% completition I'm not squeezing every penny out of the experience.

DMC4 was fun but to be honest awfully short and repetitive compared to DMC1 and 3.

Jeckyl, what did they used to include for free that they're now including as DLC? I'm pretty sure you just pulled that comment straight out of your ass. They've had 4 previous Resident Evil games and none included multiplayer (or co-op for that matter) and about 100 prior SF games and none included true alternate costumes.

It's kind of hard not to support Capcom. Sure, they've screwed up a few times here and there (Clover Studios is no more), but they've still provided us with 30 continuous years worth of awesome memories. Being one of the few Japanese developers to really grasp modern gaming technology and embrace a world market, it's hard to fault them for this one folly. It's a learning curve, and as far as Japanese development is concerned, Capcom is still leading it.

You're only punishing yourself.

No I don't take stuff up my ass,what you do? Creep.

Ha ha no you ignorant nincompoop what I meant is that Capcom used to include a lot of cool stuff in their games like in Resident evil 2 5th survivor and alternate costumes.

Now in games like Megaman 9 bosses and other characters are unlockable for price.Not neccesary stuff but that sort of stuff like cheats etc was included in the past generation and was ultimate awesome.

Nowadays is all about DLC and achivements.The last game I played that you could use cheats was Dead Space and calling having 1,000 credits once per gameplay a cheat would be exaggerating.

But thanks for trying to put words in my mouth toser.

Well itty the thing is that Capcom is what you said true but if you stick with Capcom for a while you notice that they also have this annoying tendency of running after the American Market and screwing their fans at every chance they get.

Dino Crisis as always is a good example; they run a perfectly good game to the ground in order to make it more American. In the case of RE:5 it worked and now is hard to blame them for that actually I think RE:5 is the best selling Resident evil game or at least sold more than any of the previous games (not counting 4,now you could say I made up that since I’m using Gametrailers numbers)

Then again Capcom is hard to hate them since they aren’t like Konami and SE that stick with their franchises and never move. Capcom also gave us Haunting Grounds and VJ (HG was weird but it wasn’t bad and its genius compared with *sigh rule of the rose)

Still I don’t like when they take cool stuff like that away from their games, they lose a bit of the spark. Again I don’t blame them business is business and you can bet Vince soul I’m buying Dead Rising 2.

You're making no sense dude. You said that Capcom games used to include cool unlockable stuff but now it doesn't because they just sell it, that's just not true.

SF4 has more unlockable stuff than any of the other dozens of SF's they've released. And on TOP of that extra stuff they also have alternate costumes (as DLC) which they've never had before.

I have no idea what is available in RE5 since I have no plans to play it, but I would guess it's not stripped of unlockable stuff either.

@jimmijam - Have you played Resident Evil 5? Supposedly it is indiscernible between the versions for each respected platform. Lost Planet was a year old port. Lost Planet 2, like RE5, is being developed for a simultaneous (or near-simultaneous) release on both platforms. This is on top of LP2 using the updated MT Framework also used in RE5.

I thought Dead Rising was awesome. It was the reason I bought a 360. Survivor AI was fine for what it was supposed to be. I don't know too many teen girls or fat slobs that would run around crazy if there was an infestation of zombies. Also thought have save/safe spots made more sense in a Survival Horror type game. Saving anywhere would make no sense.

Originally I'd have preferred more save slots. But later on I saw it would make no sense. Also I know some people had issue with the writing. I never did since I knew I could just move closer to the screen. but hopefully most people have an HDTV they are pretty reasonable now.

I would like them to adopt the GTA 4 Cover system. Also would like to create my character like in Saints Row.

But overall I look forward to the sequel. And hope it gets rid of Otis. He always called at the worst times.

Never thought I'd be happy for a game delay, but with the over-saturation of the zombie genre (Resident Evil 5, Left 4 Dead, House of the Dead, RE:UC, the RE Wii-makes, and the upcoming Darkside Chronicles), I think that waiting until 2010 for Dead Rising 2 would be a good thing. Not to mention the extra time spent could be used to improve the controls, improve the save structure, and get rid of Otis.
