Just an FYI for Sam but if he is using his UK Xbox Live account in America he will only be able to access the UK marketplace even though it will be on an American Xbox.

Thanks for answering my question! I will give it a try tonight after a post-college meeting. Yeah, maybe I should start writing... I can make a living like you guys. (that would be sweet!)

@ sam - using your xbox in canada should be fine, if you are taking your gamertag with you then it should give you the uk marketplace too when you sign in (even though you are in canada) so you will be able to access uk exclusive content, but not canadian, (but you can easily get round that by creating a silver canadian account).

with Mass Effect, you could just load up your 'final mission' or completed save, then it's only a couple of hours til your off your leash to play the 'Bring Down the Sky' DLC..

...Any sign of this new 'anniversary of the first DLC' DLC? I thought we were going to get quite a bit of it.. I'm thinking it could be GDC week..

Didn't start playing Fallout 3 til after Operation Anchorage came out. Went into the the DLC area unknowingly at around level 3 and decided to finish it. WOW!

I came out at around level 6 and with literally the best equipment in the game. I have the Chinese Stealth armor, the T-51b (or whatever) armor, Gauss Rifle, Shocksword, and some other fun stuff. Its pretty much the stuff you would get from the really hard sidequests and towards the end of the game at around level 18. It has really made the game a lot easier. Pretty much everyone except the super mutant behemoths die from a sneak critical headshot with the Gaus Rifle (Chinese stealth armor pretty much lets me get right in their faces. This includes super mutant masters and Yais (or whatever bear looking creatures).

I'm just breezing through the game.

Just started a new game last week, bought Operation Anchorage and did it at around Level 6-9. Now with the Gauss Rifle, Chinese Stealth Armour, along with 100 Energy Weapons/100 Sneak skills, the hardest part of the game is putting the disc in the Xbox. :D

"Considering every person playing on Xbox 360 should have a microphone -- not the case on PC -- it's not that surprising."

Well, mabye but some like me can't speak for one reason or other, my reason being that my vocal cords were seriously damaged in a car crash when I was little and Id have to shout myself into a sore throat just to be heard at everyone elses normal level. Mabye thats why I shy away from FPS games. Even when I play Soul Calibur I'm constantly being kicked out of games before they even start just because "no mic" and half the people I message explaining why assume I'm lying.

To be fair Mass Effect you can start the game again with all the stats you got from your previous play through, so it's not a major issue.

Xbox Slim...

Now not to add fuel to the fire but...

My Xbox 360 Pro order from Dell corporate EPP (long story, was a great deal) was cancelled last week. I had over a month long wait for them to tell me my order wouldn't be fulfilled because "they couldn't get anymore stock". This is strange because Dell Home has plenty in stock (which I told them and they said the inventory systems are completely different between the two "companies"). The Sales support guy apologized profusely, gave me a $100.00 gift card with a three month expiration date and said "MS has let us know that two new SKUs will be forthcoming in June and that’s why we can’t get anymore stock.”

Personally, I believe it’s just two new bundles to replace the holiday ones but MS sure seems to be quiet about what’s coming out this year.

Don't expect anyone at Joystiq to know anything about modding.

Also can someone fill me in on the Nebraska comment? I live here and would kinda like to know.
"Older Survivors/Rivals/Allies all seem to be exactly what they should be; middle aged gamers living in so-and-so Nebraska, USA."

I was the one posting the question, and what I meant was addressing those common stereotypes, you know, the ones where it's that one dude who lives in that one part of the US, who has a southern drawl...you get me? Ah, whatever, I'm Canadian ;)

Well Nebraska is not in the south, we're in the midwest. People here in Lincoln don't have (noticeable?) accents.

Yeah, Nebraskans have absolutely no accents in our voice at all. You must be thinking about Georgia and what not.

@Sam

Regarding Save games, in general save games aren't region locked. I can only think of Tiger Woods that appears to lock its save games to the particular region however, I may be wrong.

I've never had a problem so far (touch wood) and I'm doing something similar.

At least for the games that I played from different regions, I can say, that I had no problems with the save games, as long as they´re tied to the same gamertag.

e.g. my brothers game was a PAL version which I created the first saves with on my Xbox. Then I got myself the (compatible) NTSC version of the same game using the saves I created with my brothers version. No problem so far!

@Mr Emouss

I'd imagine that the reason that you sound slightly more high pitched than normal is down to the limited bandwidth used for sending voice down the internet, along with various other things.

Firstly you may have noticed that if you are filmed (and talk) or record you voice using some other device, you will probably think "Do I really sound like that" and the simple answer is "yes!". We perceive our own voices in a very different way to the rest of the world. Our mouths being in front of our ears and our voices projecting forward means that we hear less of the sound coming from our mouths and more through the vibrations from our vocal cords resonating through our skull, odd but true. Also the area where sound is broken down into it's different frequencies (the cochlea) and sent to the brain, is attached to our skull (I believe), which means that as the bass tones are carried better, as they travel better through solids than higher frequencies, the result is a more bassy sounding perception of your voice.

So with that in mind the next point is on the frequency range of the human voice and the bandwidth used to transfer it through the intermatubes to other US citizens or your UK/European brethren.

The frequency range of the human voice is about 300 - 3400 Hz (thank you wikipedia) and these frequencies go to shape the individual sound of your voice. Now if you think of how telephones tend to sound incredibly horrible and it can be difficult to recognise peoples voices over them (or atleast it used to be more like this). This is down to the bandwidth used to transfer the sound of your voice being limited to a smaller range than your voice, so as to fit more data down the lines (more cost effective), supposedly about 300 - 3000 Hz, which slightly destroys my theory as the higher range frequencies are lost more than the bass, but it's usually the low and high frequencies that are removed leaving you with the mid range stuff, which is more common for everyone's voice, but will alter the sound to a degree. Xbox Live is going to use a similar method of frequency compression to make sure that your voice doesn't end up taking up half the bandwidth of your internet and result in less bandwidth for the more important stuff, like where that bloke with the big-ass gun is. I'd imagine that the characteristics of your voice are made up more from the bass frequencies than the high stuff, meaning that when those frequencies are removed (coupled with the afore mentioned bassier perception of your own voice) the result is that when you hear your own voice back through all that stuff, it sounds much higher than you think it should.

Here endeth the lesson.

A lot of XBLM content is region specific with a ip lockout.

I live in Italy, while I can SEE the Marketplace crap on my US live account, when I go to download a lot of stuff, I get "this is not available for yout region" Bullshit.

I have a US account, with a US credit card, with a US military address, yet I can't get my own home region stuff?

Your hardware region may be at fault here. The hardware region always trumps Live profile region. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908223 You can find a list of games which are multi-region on Play-Asia's site as well. Unfortunately you're probably out of luck with regards to DLC.

Nope, My elite is american. They block the IPs coming from outside the US. The zune store does the same thing, as do Netflix, Blockbuster and Hulu.

at least the netflix has a workaround on 360.
