The Xbox 360 has a great layout and games, but it has to be the worst put together console in history! I hope MS learns from all this when they design the 360's successor.

Again, PSX, PS2... I do believe those are the worst designed consoles in history when you want to talk about problems. The fact that Sony lost a class action law suit that forces them to repair/replace any PS2 where the customer claims a Disc Read Error message, for free, should tell you about the build quality.

The RRoD and E74 are pretty widespread, but I would say still not as widespread as DREs for the PS2 or the massive overheating problems and needing to have the console upside down because the optical drive was complete crap in the PSX before they redesigned it to the PSOne smaller version.

I beg to differ. During the PS2 era. I barely heard about the DRE problem. I blame that to the people who don't take care of their games. Often leaving game disc with the readable side on a table or the floor, getting fingerprints on the disc. Then saying the PS2 has a DRE problem. Obviously, look how you treat your games. I still have my PS2 from launch and it works just fine and so do all my friends.

RRoD was a far bigger problem. There's really no comparing. In the modern times of gaming. The RRoD is the worst most controversial problem a console has ever had. There's no one I know who didn't have an RRoD. It was such a widespread problem that it became a Phenomenon, spawning t-shirts, mock videos, even IGN has a blogcast called the RRoD.

@sam

I must be in the minority then... I have a near launch PS2 that still works like a charm. And another used ps2 I got several years back for my dad. I also have a PS1... it also works perfectly. Hell, even my Sega genesis, NES, SNES, and Atari work like champs. When/if I play them.

Its all about how you treat your games and console.

Here's my story: My 360 got an E74 error message on Thursday, February 26, 2009. (It was manufactured in June 2006 and purchased by me in March 2007.) Everything had been fine until then. No warning, no video problems, no change in my configuration. Suddenly, the message and a quarter RRoD. Since it had been more than a year since I purchased it, my warranty was up and I had to pay $100 to fix it. Microsoft Support said that the three-year warranty only applies if three red rings appear.

So I mailed it off on Friday, February 27, and received it back on Friday, March 13. I am out $100 and had to go without my 360 for two weeks, but I guess it could be worse. They did send me an Xbox Live 1-month card, though!

your an idiot for two reasons:

1.First and foremost for the way your spell and talk on the internet.
2. A ps3 does'nt freeze if your computer is on if they're both on the internet you tool. (and even if it somehow did, least it doesnt melt when you play games like the 360)

And PS3 has NO problems cobomusicinc. why would you connect any game to a bad internet connection??? sounds like a personal problem.
Get a job and get Verizon FiOS, you wont have a problem.

Im not bias about PS3 or 360 but PS3 appeals to me waaay more in every aspect from graphics to performance and quality. If microsoft would actually invest in their products like sony did, they might have a quality product that doesnt have a new unkown malfunction every 6 months. which shows you that they are continuing to build crappy systems without fixing the problems. That new red limited edition will probably do the same thing also.

I havent touched my 360 in 5 months due to lack of interest in using the system, i even have the some of the same games for each system and i always like PS3s version better. They have a virtual world, connecting to the internet is FREE, wireless internet is standard, blue ray player is standard. if you want to make an xbox 360 comparable to the PS3, then you have to buy atleast an elite version, then add the hd dvd player and wireless internet, youve already gone over the price of a new ps3 wich has all the standard, not to mention blue ray is better, quality, and they discontinued hd dvds so that option is basically obsolete now.

i can go on for days just from my personal experience about how ps3 is better in every aspect out of any entertainment system out today besides the good ol' pc or mac. yet the ps3 is still a faster computer then the majority of computers out there.

Let me get this straight:

43,6 % of people who participated in this survey, or 3626 joystiq readers if you like, had either E74 or RROD since the NXE launch?

So much for the "great quality" of the Xbox.

Sure do love the fanboyisms going on here, on both sides... It's pretty hilarious no matter which side they are coming from. I read an article a couple months back that were listing failure rates for all 3 systems. A lot depended on the specific system you bought, the more expencive ones generally having the lower numbers cause of the better materials used. The 360 ranged from like 7% for the latest Elite models to an extimated 35ish% for the cheapest first production run models. The PS3's reached a high of 3% for their cheap first production run models and went down from there. And the Wii have simulear numbers to what the PS3 has. I wish I could see the real numbers for myself but just like everyone else I have to go off of what is released and to me, what has been released, still isn't looking good enough for me to go and drop another $300 to get a "reliable" 360...

Any E74 problems with the Jasper model? I bought one a few months back assuming that MS had finally cleaned up their act, and would be plenty pissed to know that my 360 is still a ticking time bomb.

Less than 1 month out of warranty my box E74s. So I figure that it would be covered under the extended warranty that most thought would the technical issues plaguing these boxes.

However, when I call up tech/customer support they give me legal jargon and can't explain the difference between my E74 and a full red-ring other than the fact that the full ring has two more lights. They use the terms 'general hardware failure' and 'critical hardware failure' to try and explain. Last time I checked, hardware failure was hardware failure.

So four call to support trying to find someone who will listen to reason and still there is no getting through to these people.

The kicker is that between my buying the box and hearing the Microsoft announcement about the extended warranty, I was considering buying the added protection until it no longer seemed necessary.

So basically, I feel like I'm getting bent over hardcore. Way to stand up to the plate Microsoft.

I got the one red light the other day, but it was E68 as opposed to E74. For some reason, it wiped the avatar off the harddrive. I got a different machine, but haven't tested that particular harddrive yet (I usually use a 20gb, but the machine had a 120gb one in at the time of the error). Apparently, E68 could be either a voltage problem (checked the power pack, that was fine), or a harddrive or fan problem. Either way, it didn't work. I work in a games store, and we're getting more and more of the E74 error machines back, most of which are just out of the first year warranty. Because it's now a recognised problem, as long as it's in its first year warranty, they're being switched over no question. But there's been a definite increase in the last 4/5 months of E74s coming back in.

Just got my xbox back from E74 repairs, two weeks after it was mailed in. It had 2 weeks left on the one year warranty so i had to pay nothing. They also extended the warranty by 2 months. weeeeee Got a free month of xbox live and had to renew the license on everything i've downloaded from xbox live, but it didn't take long. Great advice about turning the E74 into the RRoD. Something to remember when this happens again in 3 months........

I have a Halo 3 edition with the Falcon Chip that gave me the E-74. Bought the unit in late Nov 2007. Gave me the error around mid Feb 2009. The first Pro 360 I brought home gave me the RROD almost right out of the box. Microsoft wanted me to pay S/H so they could send me a refurbished unit. Long story short I went back to where I bought the Pro and up graded to the Halo 3 edition with the Faclon Chip in hopes that I would get a good working 360. Guess I should have asked for my money back when I had the chance. I contacted the BBB. Thought about taking them to small claims court but don't want to waste my time. Contacting the BBB didn't seem to do any good. But I would recommend to anyone that is having this issue that you contact them.

So yeah, I feel pretty hopeless. I guess I'll be parting with my Halo 3. Good bye my little xbox live buddies. Hands, Hellstorm, Crissy, Rogue, Toolman, Prejudge, Blazer, Supra, Face, Gunt, The PV Clan, Bonnie(Grandmother PV), TV, and all my other little buddies that I've played Halo with online in the last year. Good times!

I don't think I'll be running out any time soon to spend my money on GARBAGE.

I like my Halo but I don't like it that much.

I live in Taiwan and my Halo edition 360 just got the E74 error. I called Microsoft Taiwan and I have to pay around 100USD. I paid the 100USD now I have to take the console to the authorized Microsoft repair shop down the road and they said they will send me a new console in the mail in 10 business days. So, I went out and got a new PRO and a 120G hard drive for now.

I was running my 360 elite yes ELITE on a sony bravia and it got E74. Then i run my brothers 360 premium that he had been using on his other tv in the other room on my sony bravia. After a couple of days it started to show the same symtoms of E74. I had changed the cables, i was playing a different game...

Was my sony bravia the cause of the deaths of these two consoles or was it just a strange and unfortunate coincidence. Or was it the 3 month old sony tv????

What do i do if i bye another xbox and use it with the bravia tv it may just brake in the same way like the others. Who do i blame ?? sony or microsoft ???
