Mass Effect 2 coming to Xbox 360, PC in 'early 2010'

Although EA stated Mass Effect 2 would be destined for multiple platforms, the lack of a PS3 announcement is rather disconcerting. That's BioWare and Valve (both EA-published developers, mind you) omitting certain major titles on the PlayStation 3. Why no love for Sony?
We've put in word to BioWare and EA for comment, and, you know, just to make sure. We'll update this post as the news comes in. In the meantime, why not check out that sizzlin' hot teaser trailer after the break!
UPDATE: We spoke with Heather Rabatich at BioWare this afternoon who said, "We have no comment beyond the platforms we've announced it for." That's not a confirmation or a denial of it coming to PS3. The jury is apparently still out on that possibility.

Well, now we know that 'multiplatform' didn't mean the PS3.
xenocidic @ Mar 17th 2009 2:55PM
is this the part where I say "I told you so?"
Misfit Toy @ Mar 17th 2009 4:02PM
I don't know why all the push for a PS3 version. Mass Effect 1 was published by Microsoft. What good would just part 2 and 3 do the PS3 crowd? As well as the fact that Microsoft put their money on the line to make it exclusive to their console. I don't see how or why they'd want to do that. That would be like the Resistance series coming over to the 360.
The Baron @ Mar 17th 2009 4:52PM
I don't think I said it would come to PS3 (checked the old article just to make sure!), but a lot of commenters thought that the word multiplatform at least hinted that both PS3/360 would get the game.
kbomb1upc @ Mar 17th 2009 5:08PM
@Misfit Toy
The reason for the PS3 push is because Mass Effect is no longer publish under Microsoft Studios but its being developed by BioWare which is apart of EA. And EA loves money, so they always release games on both platforms (L4D doesn't count because it was published by EA not developed).
I own a PS3 and this was the only game I wanted to play on the 360. I bought a 360 just about 3 weeks and I just started playing this game (my PS3 died last week) and its amazing. EA would be stupid not to release this game on both platforms. I wouldn't be surprise to see Mass Effect 1&2 released together on the PS3. That could be the reason for the delay.
David @ Mar 17th 2009 6:20PM
@kbomb1upc
I guess the 360 is entitled to FFXIII Versus and MGS4 by that logic, and FFXIII in Japan. The PS3 has more than their fair share of exclusives that spilled over from their PS2 superiority, and the prevailing idea that the PS3 is entitled to everything and the 360 has to make a case for any exclusive is ridiculous.
Snowblind @ Mar 17th 2009 1:31PM
They already said that "multiplatform" for this and Dragon Age meant PC/360.

BlaqueBeird @ Mar 17th 2009 1:32PM
It's probably because Gabe Newell has an irrational and deep-seeded hatred for PS3.
On a side note: WOO! Mass Effect 2! More alien side-boob!
I hope my wife doesn't read this.
Magetto @ Mar 17th 2009 2:03PM
Gabe Newell is Valve, Mass Effect is Bioware/EA.

"That's BioWare and Valve (both EA-published developers, mind you) omitting certain major titles on the PlayStation 3. Why no love for Sony?"
That's what I was commenting on. I know, reading the WHOLE post is time consuming, but it helps you keep up.
BlaqueBeird @ Mar 17th 2009 5:49PM
And yes, I know that it really has nothing to do with the story, I just love that Valve hates PS3, not because I'm anti-Sony (I'm a PC gamer), it's just funny that Gabe's a fanboy.
Popfrogs @ Mar 17th 2009 5:52PM
Mass Effect: the ruined pile of splinters left behind after Gabe sits in a wooden chair.
skyzbig @ Mar 17th 2009 1:34PM
Maybe it's the same as what happened to Red Alert 3 on the PS3.
Oh well, between God of War 3 and Mass Effect 2 due to arrive in early 2010....I'll choose the former.
Cellien @ Mar 17th 2009 1:35PM
Good thing those games are so similar. (/sarcasm)
ryan @ Mar 17th 2009 2:22PM
I'm gonna choose both! How does that float your boat?!
Saria the Cat @ Mar 17th 2009 2:38PM
@Ryan: Psh, everyone knows you can't own and enjoy BOTH systems. It's all about investing all your time, energy, and love into one precious system and defending it to the death. You'll miss out on some console exclusives, earn enemies, and be a mindless troll, but that's the sacrifice you make to be a REAL hardcore gamer.
Maverick Saturn @ Mar 17th 2009 2:41PM
*Nods*
Saria the Cat speaks the truth, fanboyism is the way to go :)
Hyams @ Mar 17th 2009 3:59PM
Or fangirlism, I guess.
Shimrra @ Mar 17th 2009 1:34PM
Well sucks for Sony owners but what are you going to do. Sony still has alot of other games available. Who knows maybe Bioware is working on a version that will have both version with all extra content included for one price.

Cellien @ Mar 17th 2009 1:34PM
It would be interesting if Blu-Ray is indeed what hurt the PS3 (as a gaming platform). Many, many consumers bought a PS3 because it is one of the best Blu-Ray players out there, not neccasserily for games (I fall into that category). If people aren't buying games, then publishers will hold back.
BxGT @ Mar 17th 2009 1:42PM
That was before, now there are blu ray player for half the price and twice the speed.
DEEZNUTZ @ Mar 17th 2009 2:01PM
@BxGT
Really? I know there are players for half as much, but twice as fast? Can you provide the model no. info on said player(s)?

Cellien
Do you actually think that has anything to do with it? Keep repeating your anecdotal experience and applying to to everyone else like it's gospel. I would be willing to bet it had more to do with a contractual agreement with MS before EA purchased Bioware. I guess when you say the same stuff day after day you start believing that it's actually true. Like in your case where you believe everyone bought a PS3 to watch movies.
Cellien @ Mar 17th 2009 3:01PM
@Bissy: First of all, I didn't say everyone bought a PS3 for movies, I said a lot did.
Second, you are in no place to call someone else out on "saying the same thing day in day out". You are really like a bot, sent from the future from Sony Defense Force. Was there a Judgement Day when Sony decided to abandon the Playstation brand so they are sending bots back in time to spread the good name of SonyNet and ensure it's progression? The Micro-Nino resistance fighters are TOO POWAFUL. :D
Really, lighten up. I think you're gonna get an ulcer with as many defending posts you chuck up.
Marty @ Mar 17th 2009 5:25PM
Of course the BRD player hurt the PS3 - if they hadn't have included that, the system would have come out a year earlier and would have probably been at least $200 cheaper. The Xbox 360, which suffered shortages for months, would have been dead in the water.
Bissy Boy (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Mar 17th 2009 7:29PM
"Second, you are in no place to call someone else out on "saying the same thing day in day out"."
I didn't say that. I said you were starting to believe that your own anecdotal circumstance is somehow representative of others that have bought it because you seem to say it every single day. As in you have actually convinced yourself that "many, many people" bought a PS3 simply to play movies because you did.
"You are really like a bot, sent from the future from Sony Defense Force. Was there a Judgement Day when Sony decided to abandon the Playstation brand so they are sending bots back in time to spread the good name of SonyNet and ensure it's progression? Pretty funny stuff mate. I guess I'll leave that one with your entitled to your own opinion. I mean you have said the same thing for about 4 consecutive days now.
"Really, lighten up. I think you're gonna get an ulcer with as many defending posts you chuck up."
I'm good buddy. I think you read it with an angry voice in your head. Thus causing a mass effect of confusion :o
If you want to use misdirection thats cool. If you actually believe that this game isn't on the PS3 because "publishers are holding back" then I respectfully disagree. Again, there is no way to quantify what amount of people bought a PS3 just for movies but as I said yesterday I would bet thats the exception and not the rule. Seriously man you said yourself you bought an extra 360 in addition to the PS3 just for movies. Thats not the average consumer. Anyway, what evidence do you have to suggest that people aren't buying PS3 games? ... I know what it is ... because you have one game? Thats fantastic.
Martysoft

So Cellien says that many, many people are buying it solely for movies and you say of course that means the BR has hurt the PS3? I'll flip it on you Marty. If MS had included HD-DVD for games and had it built in the format war probably would have been won already (1 year jump!) and the PS3 would already be dead. It's so fun to pull stuff out of your ass!
Cellien @ Mar 18th 2009 1:40PM
Bissy: When I say "a lot of people" with what you think means "everyone", that's the root of your misunderstanding. I mean "a lot of people" bought PS3 for Blu-Ray movies, not everyone. Get it straight!
With regards to low sales of games, it is based on the low attach rate to games per console and much lower sales numbers than the competition (360).
Don't get your point of the last paragraph... It's very possible the PS3 would be dead if it wasn't for Blu-Ray. My original statement was that it's also very possible it is what hurt it as a gaming machine. Lots of focus on a new movie format, so it's perceived as such. On the flip-side, if it didn't include a Blu-Ray ROM, it may have been a much closer competitor right out of the gate with the 360, with a similar release window, similar features, and similar pricing. However, that wasn't my original point (it was Marty's), but the feeling is mutual.
tmacairjordan87 @ Mar 17th 2009 1:35PM
My favorite game of 07 for sure, so I can't wait for the sequel.
But 2010?? You're killin me Bioware!
Bissy Boy (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Mar 17th 2009 2:46PM
The game was pretty fantastic. Hopefully this time around they can do some more work on the environments. The facial animations and character models are some of the best the 360 has seen but the environments weren't as impressive. It's really a trivial complaint and just shows how good the game actually is when thats all there is to bitch about. The combat could also use a little work but just some progression and evolutuion opposed to a complete overhaul. My favorite thing about the game had to be the music. The music was some of the best I've heard on a videogame.
If it ever does release on the PS3 hopefully it will support keyboard and mouse because I heard it improved the PC version exponentially and seemed like a natural fit.
TheDemiurge @ Mar 17th 2009 3:04PM
It'll be worth the wait if they can fix the texture pop-in from the first game. It was so distracting and ruined a lot of the atmosphere of the game.
Petebot330 @ Mar 17th 2009 4:57PM
Has anyone dowloaded MAss Effect to their hard drive? Does it help with the pop-in?
arrrgh @ Mar 17th 2009 6:05PM

rock on man! I totally agree some of the best music I've heard since the glory days of megaman2
Markez @ Mar 17th 2009 8:32PM
Same here, and I'd say it's easily one of my favorite games of all time. Wish there were some sort of similar game on the 360 that'd sate my thirst while we wait for the next.
Man, I really wish they would do more with DLC. I suppose 2010 might also mean they're bound to release more DLC as a teaser to get people hyped for II
MadamTampini @ Mar 17th 2009 8:56PM
@Petebot330
Holy crap does it help. Pop-in is reduced dramatically if you install the game. I highly recommend it.
joeybeast @ Mar 17th 2009 1:36PM
PC developers just doesn't like PS3 do they?
so looking forward to this.
The Alex @ Mar 17th 2009 1:37PM
I don't want to sound like I'm hating on PS3 here, but why would they release it for PS3?
From a business standpoint, while it would offer a larger group of people access to Mass Effect 2, how many people who own a PS3 (and not a 360) played Mass Effect 1? With that in mind, how many PS3 owners would buy a games sequel, without playing the first game?
It just doesn't make much sense to me. I guess if they were to release Mass Effect 1 on PS3 in the next year, then a sequel would make sense...
Having said that, as a fan of the first Mass Effect, the more people who play Mass Effect 2 (on 360, PC or even PS3), then it's more likely we'll see even more sequels in the future, which is great!
Phantom @ Mar 17th 2009 1:48PM
Maybe they'll have both games in one, like Mass Effect Ultimate Edition or something, or maybe at GDC they'll just go and annnounce Mass Effect 1 for PS3, and release it soon after.
Sir Buzz Killington( The Artist formerly known as Jakka) @ Mar 17th 2009 1:53PM
On the other hand, how many Killzon 2 buyers have ever played Killzone? I'd dare to go as far as saying less than 50%.
I do believe that Gabe's PS3 hate is actually far from "irrational", but the fact remains that given enough hype, you can sell just about anything.
SoulBlade @ Mar 17th 2009 2:19PM
I get your point, but if you swap it and have God of War 3 come out on the 360, how many people wouldn't buy it because they didn't play the first two? Probably few...
Though GoW and ME are completely different games, I find that most sequels can often stand on their own if good enough. I imagine Fable 2 didn't require playing the first - though I can't speak with certainty as I never played it. Fallout 3 probably didn't require playing the first two.
Granted, having played all of the previous titles will provide a different experience when playing a sequel, but a sequel is still a game, and a good game stands on its own.
The Baron @ Mar 17th 2009 2:53PM
While it's nice to think that gigantic corporations want to offer a joyous time to everybody, porting a two-year old game to the PS3 just doesn't make a lot of financial sense.
Lord Negatron @ Mar 17th 2009 3:37PM
Mass Effect was said to be a be a trilogy from the beginning. People forget, including myself who has deleted the completed game save file to save HDD space...
:(
Vcize @ Mar 17th 2009 3:48PM
Isn't Mass Effect 1 published by Microsoft? So would they even be able to release it on the PS3?
Also, the KZ2/GooW3 examples don't really fit because those games are built almost purely on their gameplay. The stories in those are just a side-thing. Mass Effect is an RPG where the story is just as, if not more important than the gameplay. So missing out on the first one is much more likely to keep people away.
It's kind of like comparing seeings Empire Strikes Back without seeing a New Hope to seeing Terminator 2 without seeing Terminator 1.
