Target receives new PS3 SKU to release after GDC

According to a reader tip, Target stores are receiving a brand new PS3 SKU. The DPCI item number for the new product is 207-23-0009 and it will be available on March 29, a few days after the end of Game Developer's Conference.

The new SKU, confirmed by our tipster's photo, bundles the now-standard 80 GB console and two Greatest Hits games: MotorStorm and Resistance: Fall of Man. Those who have managed to keep track of the various SKUs will find this package awfully similar to a bundle launched in Europe in 2007. Heck, all it does is add Resistance to the now-defunct MotorStorm bundle.

Unfortunately, our tipster says this new bundle doesn't come with a price drop. The SKU will retail for $399, the same price as the current low-end PS3. Yes, the addition of two free games makes it a better value, but this bundle can't replace the "price drop" analysts have been predicting (and publishers have been begging for). Either this is a Target-specific bundle, or this will be one of the most unexciting PS3 announcements to date.

He asked us to push the old bundle that came with uncharted according to him its getting replaced with something i dont know if this bundle is it but he did say not to expect many more 160 shipments he just a rep that goes to most retailers to check on things so its not like he's a boss or anything but he usually dosent BS but i guess well see when GDC starts

Surprising! Same price, with moar stuph, again! I still think they need to offer a barebones PS3 with no wi-fi and a very small HDD, no games, maybe even a wired controller (if those exist). $299. Still keep Blu-Ray, maybe ship with an advertisement disc for Blu-Ray movies and games. Bait the consumer with a cheap price, reel'em in with movie and game purchases.

Or, just keep doin' what they are doin' and hope for the best!

The PS3 was intentionaly made to save Blu Ray, nothing more, its a failing piece of garbage, I still regret buying mine, even though I got it for 1/2 price!!

PS2, different story, one of the best machines of all time!

Instead of trying to remove excess inventory, they should just pack in the bluetooth headset and make more profit off that bundle.

This SKU at $399 would have been a great marketing tactic for Sony...a year ago. Now it's a bit of 'too little, too late'. I doubt many people will run out to take advantage of this 'deal'. Eventually I plan on getting a PS3 for the Blu-Ray (+games of course), but until it's @ $299, I'll be looking at either the Xbox ($199!) or Wii. Guess Blu Ray can wait. The thing that will force a price cut for Sony is when developers finally start to jump ship due to less than stellar unit sales. In the meantime, they're just playing into MS's hands, who have got to be loving the lack of a PS3 price cut more than anyone, b/c they don't have to readjust their prices on the 360(s) to keep sales competitive. Rest assured, if Sony drops the PS3 price, MS will follow suit with a new round of XBox price cuts... Nintendo might even find the motivation to adjust the $ of the Wii, though until sales drop, there's no reason for them to. And the winner is...Nintendo.

Nintendo's unit sales are slowly starting to drop now. I think at this point we are going to see less and less Wii's sold. At any of the major retailers in my area I can see multiple units sitting on the shelves; now that I think about it the Best Buy I stopped at the other day probably had 30 or so in stock. While the Wii's lifecycle isn't over with, I think the massive sales numbers on the consoles are. I wouldn't be surprised to actually find a used Wii at a Gamestop now.

If they're releasing a bundle with two game priced exactly the same as the current low end SKU, wouldn't logic dictate that a price drop is coming to the $399 console that doesn't come with any games?

Even if it does, it's Sony. They'll go to $349, not the $299 everyone and their mother is waiting for.

I was just in my local target yesterday and they have 3 of these for sale in the display, glad i waited to get one. Was the release date change or is my store just lucky.

I recently just posted at the PlayStation Universe Forums that I saw the SKU sitting on the shelves of my local Target on Saturday. I took a picture of it also and posted it.

can someone look at the box to see if it is a CECHP or a CECHQ?
