I think it was just a coincidence that the industry started experiencing troubles at the same time as the economy at large. Certainly if you look at a lot of 2008 numbers, you'll find that in terms of revenue, it was the best year ever for some companies, but they all posted losses too

It's the mark of an unsustainable business model that many companies were pursuing, that happened to come around and bite them in the ass at just the wrong time. The time when help becomes scarcely available.

So long as these companies develop a solid business plan, and are able to secure the capital, they should be fine. The key is the solid business plan.

I don't think the connection between the cratering of the economy and the decrease of the game industry was consequential. The former certainly had an influence on the latter.

And Jason, thanks for writing this excellent feature. Try to keep focusing on the human side of the game industry as much as you can. Also, if you could continue to highlight these smaller studios, that would be great.
