You start by mixing tonics and medicines for local villagers until you get noticed by the king. The king then commissions you to create new castle defenses and weaponry while perfecting different poisons. The game reaches its climax when you create the philosopher's stone and a homunculus which goes frankenstein monster on the town. In order to win you have to forcibly deconstruct your creation with medieval era swords, bows, and explosives.

The sequel takes place in the wilderness after your cast out for your grievous error and you need to transmute furry woodland creatures into tools to survive.
