We suppose grass might not be very exciting, but that doesn't mean it's any easier to put into games than anything else, especially considering the sheer amount of it needed in a game like Flower. In fact, Flower has coded 200,000 blades of grass to simultaneously move and sway in the wind, and co-founder / president of ThatGameCompany Kellee Santiago said this could only be possible on the PS3.
"It really would be impossible to make it look the same on any other system," she said in an interview with Gamezine. The developers say rendering Flower's detailed and free-flowing grass "leverages the PS3" and makes good use of the system's advanced SPU. So, the next time someone disses Flower for being a sissy casual title, let them know how hardcore it really is.

Had a few bucks to waste and I just bought an HDTV so I thought I'd download it. Gotta say, visually impressed very much.

I still don't get why a studio that makes exclusive PS3 games gets an opinion on what's possible on other systems...

they still know the technical specs of each system

I'm sure as a games develper they'd need to be informed on games development in general including on other consoles.

I think they mean overall only ps3 can do it.The 360 can probably handle this game but it would be a pain in the butt and not as good to play it with a joystick and D-pad. The motion controls can be use for the wii but it will probably self destruct trying to handle the graphics. So in conclusion the game requires and advanced cpu and motion controls so ps3 offers the best of both worlds.

JuanDHexen,
You are right the control mechanism would not work on the xbox 360.
The key is the SPU's read into it again. Each individual grass is animated, this is done on the cell processor using the spus so again I doubt the xbox360 would physically be able to pull it off either..

...and the gamecube can make 128 Marios running around on the screen.
Looks nice but the game is all grass, a moving camara, not to much textures ( just solid colors), low polygonal objects ( or whatever the word is).
try making 200k+ grass blades in a game like uncharted and i will WOW at it.
I dont think its the power or the ps3, i think the xbox could have handle it too. (but the xbox marketplace doesnt allow games 500mb+)

ya, i would say it is possible but honestly it would be only possible on the wii due to the sixaxis gameplay and the visuals would have been cut down for the wii....so really she is telling the truth. Imagine playing flower on the d-pad O_o

Heck if anyone disses Flower for any reason I'll tie them down on a chair, glue a SIXAXIS to their hands and force them to play the game.
It's THAT good IMO.

I'd love 200,000 pieces of grass, dispensed from a black box in my living room.

damn skippy. I was thinking about the grass while playing it, comparing it in my head to something like Oblivion's visuals. OK, not a fair comparison by any means, but the way that grass moves when I fly my flower-petals was one of the first things I noticed about the game - and it feels so... free. Also, it's not heavily reliant on textures (I'd assume), and it's simple but in large quantities (all grasss behaves the same) - that's perfect for the cell. I can see why the ps3 would be the most capable of the systems.

Oh, forgot in my previous comment - it's not "only possible on ps3". I say that because you can port things to inferior systems jsut fine. I mean, they put a GoW game on the psp, they put MGS and spore games on mobile phones, and they final fantasy 7 on the NES - you just loose features, graphics, and playability.

Impressive.
I was impressed with the thousands of zombies on screen on Dead Rising..
maybe now someone will take a hint to get decent grass in 'normal' games.
As it says in the post, it's down to the SPU's, being there's 7 of them - though I have no idea how many are in use here, but they help control more objects simultaniously..

Arrgh! I can't believe the developers used the word "leverages" in cold blood like that. It is a crime against the English language, nay, against humanity!
Let's keep the office speak to the office, guys. Don't let it poison the minds of our youth, with its grandiose presumptions and over verbalifications.
p.s Flower is awesome!

I call BS. I played Flower with my daughter, and although its not a traditional game per se, it is well worth the $10 entry fee. However, it was not so stunning because of the visuals, nor do I think that they couldn't be done at a level indistinguishable on the 360. Making it feel the same would be tough due to the sixaxis - maybe the first game I've seen where the controller is actually better than the 360 - but due to the nature of the experience and the motion sensing being the dominant theme with 'any button' being the only other control. In every other game where so many buttons and controls are used the 360 controller is a generation ahead of the PS3 due it being mired in previous gen style (dpad aside - man that is bad on the 360).

idk why everyone says 360 controller is better. in my experience 360's is more comfortable, but the L/R bumpers are just anoying, L1/R1 are better suited for anything, i would say both have their ups & downs. dpad: nuff said. joysticks on 360's wear down easily, but are in a better position, ps3's last. ps3's is a lighter weight... i could go on, but what we really need is a DS360 controller, with the strengths of both...

the playstation controllers have continued to evolve while keeping the familiar shape and layout. the 360 controller evolve from the 3D controller for the nights game on saturn. then dreamcast where MS went from the modem and web browser to co-opting the controller for the xbox. the only thing i like about the sega/ms controllers are the triggers which i loved on the dreamcast. i'll go for the bilateral symmetry of the playstation, but i will admit the 360 controller improved alot over it's predecessors

I don't think the 360 would be able to handle all the calculations going on with each individual blade of grass. Remember, the 360 only has 3 cores while the cell has 8 (more like 6 though); much more processing power. The 360 would most definitely be able to render the visuals but the experience wouldn't be quite the same.

Funny how "exclusive" developers say each others game is only possible on said respective system. Flower can't be done on the 360 because it has 200k pieces of grass, and Splinter Cell conviction can't be done on the PS3 because it can't handle the numerous of AI physics on the screen at once.
Typical marketing BS.
