EA hasn't been just kicking back, watching The Godfather II hype build ( ... it's building, right?). The Redwood Shores studio has been tinkering with the final game during the strategic delay, and EA has announced today that a new multiplayer mode will be added -- free -- in addition to the four preexisting modes. "Don Control" will be patched into the game on release day, April 7, and features a 16-player scenario where money from the single-player game is wagered for, well, ultimate Don-ination! (Geddit?)
Confirmation of the Godfather freebie comes just days after Capcom was forced to defend its $5 multiplayer patch for Resident Evil 5 after it became clear that the modes were being prepped before the game's release. Was EA's decision to offer Don Control for free (and not save it for post-release premium DLC) influenced by Capcom's faux pas -- perhaps even a subtle swipe at its industry competitor? We like to think EA is tossing in the new mode out of the kindness of its heart (its very strategic, consumer value-bearing heart). Then again, this is the same company charging $10 for XBLA Connect Four and Yahtzee -- a piece.

Well... Although the game is still visually unappealing to me, I'm gonna pick it up if the reviews are good (especially waiting for the reactions to the Don View) because the gameplay looks fun.

Whatever the reason, it's a smart move. Even if they were planning on doing it for free anyway, the timing of this announcement makes EA look even better given Capcom's current situation.

Sweet. I don't have any interest in this game, but it's nice to see EA becoming more a company that cares about it's customer's and not just their money.
Didn't they also give some free stuff away with Bad Company at some point? Perhaps they are still holding the modes from the code and not charging, just so they look better, but eh, they're still a business.

They're only announcing this to spite Capcom. Had they charged for the mode and announced it prior to the game's release they knew it might hinder sales. I can just see a Mr. Burns-like CEO getting the news of peoples reactions to the announcement going "excellent". ;)

This game looks terrible, but at least they're not breaking off pieces and charging for them...unless they charge for unlocks and in-game money like they did for the first one. Which they probably will.

You mean as bad as the first which scores an overall 8 on gamestats?
I have higher hopes for this game, since, unlike the first, it's free-roaming and it takes place in the 70's which is always a plus :)

I bet this has more to do with EA wanting to press the game onto some discs and get it on shelves then it has to do with "giving stuff away." I imagine the mode is pretty much done, just needs a couple tweaks, but EA is going to press the discs and patch it day one like Fable 2 did.
I really think this has nothing to do with Capcom's developing new content and charging for it. Y'all are some haters for trying to tie the two together.

Actually, I personally think that they are doing it to make Capcom look worse. But that is not the reason I commented,

um burnouts first set of dlc was free as well, perhaps this is a new business model ea are adopting. maybe they feel guilty about some less than adequate games in the past

Isn't Redwood Shores the same division of EA that made Dead Space? If it is, I am in for this game.

wow i gotta say, EA is smart trying to take advantage of our hatred for capcom. either way though, this game is going to suck, so this news is moot

I don't think there's that much hype for this game (am I wrong?) and maybe they know it and if the game doesn't sell that well even less people would buy just a multiplayer mode.
It's a multiplayer mode! I just don't get why you don't get it Capcom!, game modes are title updates, not whole-new-added-experiences kind of content, like new song tracks, new maps, new missions, etc. that's the dlc that should have a price. Valve gets it, Criterion gets it, even when Activision was gonna add new game modes to COD4 was getting it.

I will be buying this game, mainly because they supported Area5 and it will be my indirect way of supporting A5 and their content.
But as far as the DLC goes, whatever the reason, free is always good. Not every developer under EA has charged for DLC either, consider Criterion for an example. EA didn't make the charge (until maybe this year?).

I always thought that these release day patches/dlc were more about preventing piracy and cutting down on 2nd hand sales....
is that not the case?

this is crazy capcom is not breaking off pieces of the game and charging you for it because multiplayer was never a part of any resident evil. they are simply trying something out and if you want to try it out then loosen your scrooge like grip of the modest 5 bucks and try it but if you dont want to then DONT BUY IT!!!! would you guyz rather them put it i the and if it suck have a more crappier version re5!
