Project Sora hiring for non-Smash Bros. game

Last month, Nintendo announced the formation of Project Sora, a new studio created from the combination of Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai's Sora Ltd. and a pile of Nintendo's money. This week, the new company took out a full-page ad in Famitsu seeking new employees.

The ad reiterates that Sora is working on "something that Nintendo can't create by themselves." Nintendo president Satoru Iwata also has quotes in the ad, which provide one small detail: "I am asking for something special here, something that isn't Smash Bros.," Iwata says. While it's entirely possible Sora or another studio is also working on another Smash Bros. title, the mysterious game that the developer is focusing on right now is something else. We don't even know which system it will involve!

Probably the latter. Sakurai left HAL Labs originally because the place was bogged down with franchise fever, though he was obviously coaxed back for one of the biggest franchise entries of 2008

I couldn't imagine him agreeing to have his studio re-formed by Nintendo if they were just going to pile more sequels on him. He'll get creative control

Yeah, I guess anything's possible but you're kidding yourself if you think Nintendo's already got someone working on a new Smash Bros. only a year after Brawl's release when, based on the last two, there's some unofficial restriction to one game per generation (which is a very smart way to do things).

It sounds like they're working on something big if you didn't notice. I can't imagine Nintendo would form a second party company ,headed by Sakurai, to localize a game that didn't sell well in Japan and would not well in the West.

Who says it'd have to be a console game?

People have been clamoring for a DS Smash Bros. ever since the system came out.

Sakurai has said that he won't make Smash Bros. for DS, and there hasn't been anything said about a portable SB game besides that. So I just assumed the idea of a new Smash Bros. referred to another console installment.

oh boy, I am so excited for this.

i hope their working on a new smash bros game brawl was pure garbage, seriously why make a game that deep with horrible physics but i guess you can call brawl "successful" in nintendo's eyes anything that prints money is "successful"

Brawl was certainly slow but I had no problems with the physics system.

Will never understand why people hate this game. I enjoy both Melee and Brawl - they feel completely different, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

I'm guessing something that Nintendo can't do themselves is a proper M-rated title. Sony and MS bank a ton of their business on it, but because Nintendo is the Disney of the gaming world, they don't want to hurt their image. I mean really, what's the most mature Nintendo title, Metroid? Great game, but it's hard to say it's inappropriate for, well, anyone.

Nintendo probably doesn't want to entrust its success to SEGA, and games like MadWorld and The Conduit, simply because they cannot control them, they cannot put their money behind it nearly so much, and it doesn't look good to have a console the first party doesn't support.

A teeny tiny part of me wants to think this is going to be Wii's Team Ico, but I keep telling that part that the world sucks too much for anything that awesome and if we're lucky it's the Wii's Square Enix. But then, it IS Sakurai...

well, there was also Eternal Darkness. Neither of them were developed by Nintendo proper, they just published them.

But I'm more talking about Nintendo's Halo/Resistance killer.

Ahh, but to kill Halo or Resistance, they would have to develop a functioning online system

If Sakurai is making this game, I reckon it won't be anything like what Team ICO does, furthermore a western studio's game such as Halo or Resistance (I'd replace Resistance with Killzone myself).
Sakurai's games have all been Kirby and Smash Bros games, plus Meteos. He's basically a Nintendo game designer, so I expect whatever Project Sora does, it'll still feel like a Nintendo game ultimately.

Sakurai hasn't worked on the Kirby series in a long time.

Of course he worked on Kirby! He always voices King Dedede! =D

Hopefully some sort of Action game. Nintendo's never really made a good one of those, and Action would seem to be Sakurai-san's forte, side-scrolling or otherwise

It'll be interesting when we finally have concrete details on this in late 2010-early 2011...

I think it'll be Kid Icarus since they said Ninty can't do it on their own and it was originally rumored that Factor 5 was gonna make it.

Dunno just speculation obviously.

3-D sci-fi adventure game I CALLED IT.

I'm still hoping that some day they'll come out with a Smash Bros. game that has online play. Brawl doesn't count. I'm talking about real online play, that actually makes you want to play online. Brawl's online is to online gaming what dial-up is to the Internet.

...I'm pretty sure they already said this would be an original game.
