So is Joystiq actually considering the iPhone/iPod Touch a full fledged handheld gaming system? Like now and forever more?

I mean personally as an owner of one I think that it doesn't hold a candle to the DS or even the PSP. I mean yeah it's got all these simple mini games but really how can anyone think it's a real handheld gaming system? I just don't see how it's worthy of all these posts regarding every game that comes out for it....

Owning all 3 as well, I agree. However, the really 'big' games, should be an exception and are worth noting. I think this is one of those exceptions I am referring too.

of course its not a DS or a PSP, at least not to me... this is why articles that state how the iTouch/iPhone is a threat to DS/PSP, its pretty much an absurd thing to gamers.

With that being said...

think of the iPhone/iTouch as a mobil game device... i bought Metal Gear Solid Mobil for my Verizon Voyager, because i heard good things about it. as for MGS:Touch, i already played MGS4 to death, i'm sure ppl who don't have the game and want a condensed version of the game will no doubt drop 8 bucks on this great story game

*phew outta breath*

Sprinkles

It's not meant to be a dedicated gaming device. It's a powerful cell phone with a touch screen and tilt sensor. It works well for specific genres and is really a great device considering the price of the games. Honestly it's graphical capabilities probably exceed the DS and rival the PSPs. This site is about games and the iPhone has a large install base and huge collection of titles. As we continue to move forward developers will figure out how best to use the system and what games work. Thus far it's got a lot of crappy games and a couple handful of gems sprinkled in there. I think tower defense and puzzle games are the best use for this type of device.

Some people here get threatened by the iPhone thing. It's not that big of a deal, great games are still being made for the DS and the PSP. Look at it the other way, which is like this: imagine if 70% of the types of games you play on your DS were suddenly available on your phone, for one tenth of the price, and available over the air, in under a minute? That's the way it's been for me and many of my friends. I own all three devices and I don't bother with my DS or PSP any more. Maybe I'll look into 'GTA:Chinatown Wars' but otherwise, I don't like carrying those larger devices in addition to my phone.

The iPhone is here to stay, I can only suggest making peace with hearing about games for it, or you're gonna go nuts. While the coverage has improved, the truth is Joystiq seems to miss talking about the games that many are actually playing on the platform. I'd like to see them put some sort of round-up of the week's most pertinent games on Fridays or something, because just like any other game platform, so many games are released and it's easy to miss hearing about the gems with all the junk that comes out. I love Joystiq, but I also supplement it with visits to toucharcade.com.

If this is the future of handheld gaming then it was nice knowin ya. You can't have any sort of meaningful games on a system with zero buttons. All you get are simplistic boring games or mini game shovelware.

As someone who has an iPhone let me say that I disagree. Remember it has a touch screen and tilt sensors and works well for certain genres like puzzle games, racing games, strategy games and tower defense games. Perhaps the best two games on the platform IMO are Fieldrunners and FF Crystal Defenders which are both tower defense games. Diner Dash also translates very well to the touch screen as do other games of that ilk like Sallys salon etc etc. Heroes of Sparta (God Of War clone), Payback (top down GTA clone), Crash Kart Racing (Mario Kart Clone) and there is also a shooter whose name alludes me that is decent. There is a small slot at the bottom of the phone that is used for syncing and charging that seems optimal for some sort of a controller attachment for future iterations. I think this Metal Gear game looks pretty fun as well especially considering the price. You have to look at these games as pick up and play anywhere type of games opposed to dedicated gaming devices like the PSP & DS which have $20, $30 and $40 games.

I think the best genres for the iPhone are puzzle games and tower defense games. Play Fieldrunners and you will quickly see it rivals PJ Monsters & Savage Moon as a top flight TDG.

I guess we can agree to disagree on that one. Not all racing games work well but I have played some of them that work very well and are less twitchy.

The game is just Konami's cash-in for the "iphone as gaming console" mentality some people tell themselves. Everyone is doing it, look at the very short Cooking Mama, which is expensive at $7. No wonder Apple was think about $9.99 games, they really don't know how the apple gamer works or if it even exists.

I think Metal Gear Ac!d would have been a better fit for the iPhone. Mainly because it is a card/turn based version of MGS opposed to a more action oriented title.

Developer #1: "Hmm, we have a sub-par game here....what can we do to increase sales?"

Developer #2: "Lets say we increase development time, include new features and improve the playing experience as a whole by integrating a solid story and deep control scheme"

Developer#1: "Don't be stupid, Its METAL GEAR BABY!!! Let the fanboys pay"

Why does this happen?!?!?!?!

I can honestly say that I havent enjoyed a sonic game since Sonic 2 on the master system 2 :O

Sonic adventure doesn't count!

Honestly, Fanboys ruin gaming for us and themselves by buying into below average shovelware which only encourages developers to produce more - and that it is ok to release any old tat as long as it has a recocognisable name attatched.Seriously, they will have to get their game on if they want us to part with our money during such wallet clinching times...

Link's crossbow training,
any post 90's Sonic game
MGS Touch,

please add to the list...

Started playing it last night, or was it early morning today? Its pretty fun, I'm halfway done....but seems very half assed. Theres no audio or video, just place cards and floating texts. The shooting it self is really well done and the game does get a little difficult in the higher levels.

why didn't they just release it for the ds or psp.If iPhone / iPod Touch is going to be a gaming device then there is going to be no point of psp/ds, iPhone/iPod Touch is obviously a lot more powerful.

I refuse to buy an Apple product ever.
They are monopolistic, nickel and diming, consumer raping company like Microsoft. Fuck them.

The G1 mobile takes the piss out of the Iphone. Like an Iphone with a qwerty keyboard and all the PHONE FUNCTIONS one comes to expect from a Phone.

I would hate to be one of the people who bought an early Iphone and have no mobile internet unless in a WiFi zone. I mean come on Apple, don't sell people unfinished products!

"but if we sell them an unfinished one, in a year they'll buy another one!"
"it will break, and when it does there will be a new version out and we can charge them again"

No thanks mr Jobs.

Huh?

Early iPhone models all included Edge which is adequate for mobile web-browsing. Newer models all include 3G which is faster but available in all areas. For those 3G owners in an Edge market the phone automatically switches to Edge. You might be thinking of the iTouch which is an iPhone without the phone and therefore doesn't include Edge or 3G.
