Rhianna Pratchett launches portfolio website
Rhianna Pratchett, the British game writer behind Heavenly Sword, Overlord (and its upcoming sequels), Mirror's Edge and Viking: Battle For Asgard has launched her portfolio website, making it easier to keep track of her various projects. The website showcases all the games that she's worked on, as well as her contributions to some game writing textbooks and her ongoing series of Mirror's Edge comic books. There are also links to interviews (including one of ours) for those who want to get a little more insight into the person behind the words. From the look of things, the site won't be updated for a while as Rhianna's being kept fairly busy with Overlord 2 and the Wii and DS Overlord games. Now that she's set up home on the internet, we wonder if she'll be joining us on Twitter soon, too.

If there's ANYONE around currently milking less talent into MORE exposure now that John Romero's disappeared, I must be doing a pretty good job of ignoring them.
The Baron @ Mar 18th 2009 8:32PM
It's because she's a she.
But as I recall, BioShock was written by a lady too, and I never hear her mentioned..
John @ Mar 18th 2009 8:56PM
... probably because Bioshock was garbage.
Hyams @ Mar 18th 2009 9:12PM
She's Terry Pratchett's daughter. Mebbe that helps.
Or could just be that she's gunning for publicity, unlike any other videogame writer.
(Although I have to say, I loved Heavenly Sword's story - not so much the plot, but I found the characters and the dialogue great.)
censorman @ Mar 18th 2009 9:51PM
Why do they want us to care? Cause she's a chic.
Tim Schafer doesn't have a blog.
Michael Ancel doesn't have a blog.
Chris PLANESCAPE TORMENT Avellone doesn't have a blog.
Those three MEN could squeeze more talent out of their toe nails than this flavor of the moment. Don't get me wrong, its awesome women are appearing in the industry. Its about TIME they are treated equally!
...so, lets FUCKING TREAT THEM EQUALLY.
Discotheque @ Mar 19th 2009 1:05AM
Actually Tim Schafer kind of has a blog, and it's bloody Timtastic. So random and hilarious.
As for Rihanna Pratchett, Overlord had some funny lines so I'll give her that.
But I think the woman who wrote the Legacy of Kain games deserves much more credit, smartly written. As does the guy who wrote one of the best game stories ever, Planescape Torment. I would also love to see Michel Ancel's blog if he had one.
Good list dude.
The Baron @ Mar 19th 2009 4:02AM
Michel Ancel's would probably be in French
ballistic3188 @ Mar 18th 2009 7:36PM
eh not a fan of her writing. mirror's edge was atrocious.
Lee @ Mar 18th 2009 8:09PM
lol yea.
But its good that we have more positive female gaming figures to balance out the poor ones who lick PSP's.
Misfit Toy @ Mar 18th 2009 9:23PM
Doh! Burn.

I thought the "staring at something far-off with hair blowing in the wind" pose was owned exclusively by anime.
FluxWaveZ @ Mar 18th 2009 8:23PM
But it looks sooooo cool! =D
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 18th 2009 7:49PM
Well... at least it's more talented than the other Rihanna.
Wiizer @ Mar 18th 2009 7:53PM
Fernando, what are you doing here? I don't see Wii or Nintendo mentioned anywhere in this post!
343 Guilty Fart @ Mar 18th 2009 7:53PM
You didn't think Umberella was the greatest thing since the Macarena?
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 18th 2009 7:54PM
Really?

Fernando... That was sarcasm. But thanks for biting the bullet. ;D

speaking of Wii games: BUY RUNE FACTORY FRONTIER DAMMIT
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 18th 2009 8:04PM
I want Rune Factory, but right now I'm a little moneyless... and I need to start saving for my DSi.
I just bought MadWorld and de Blob last sunday... and I want Rune Factory and Kororinpa 2. Too many good games at the same time.
By the way: de Blob... fucking awesome. It's my new addiction. I love the music and how it reacts to your gameplay, and the visuals are very pretty, at 60fps.
BUY DE BLOB DAMMIT
Bissy Boy (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Mar 18th 2009 8:05PM
I'm not a fan of the other Rhianna and her music but she seems to be talented and has a pretty voice. She has horrible taste in picking a sig. other but thats her personal business not mine.
The Dark Wayne @ Mar 18th 2009 8:03PM
The only writing I remember from Viking was "Yargh, we dont have any ale so go kill some guys". Which is a shame because there was a point where they made it look like Skarin was the son of Fenrir or something but instead you go there and nothing happened
madcaliban @ Mar 18th 2009 8:05PM
it would've been nice if there was a link to the portfolio.
Hyams @ Mar 18th 2009 8:07PM
Click on 'Source'.

Thanks. Neither links were available when the article was first published. Now it is.

The answers are out there Neo.

Mirror's Edge was so heavy-handed that I was pressing "start" through the cutscenes like it was a MGS mini-game. It was like a bad Sci-Fi Original penned by a random 18-year old activist they dragged off the street.
shadowhowl1900 @ Mar 18th 2009 8:16PM
lol, how much money did she pay for that shot of hers taken like that?

Rhianna Pratchett: "Is that a heavenly sword in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"
Gibbeynater @ Mar 18th 2009 9:06PM
She's pretty cute for a goth girl.
CJLopez @ Mar 19th 2009 1:01PM
Well, i don't know whta kind of goth girls are around your neighborhood, but around mine, most goth girl are the sexiest hot girls you'll ever find here in hermosillo. Well, not most of them, you'll still find hotter girls on masage house and td's, but still, at least 70% of the goth girls I know are pretty hot (and most of them i had already do them, xD)
Man, i love goth girls, but i rather have a japanese schoolgirl over a goth anytime
jsut @ Mar 18th 2009 9:32PM
Why is this story of any interest other than the "ooh, a woman has a website" that has already been mentioned? I don't recall any "noted games journalist and writer Kieron Gillen has a website" posts.
deanb @ Mar 18th 2009 9:38PM
Still prefer her dads writing.
Feel Bad for Liam Neeson @ Mar 18th 2009 9:57PM
Chris Brown didnt mess her up that bad....

honestly i was going to ask, "where's the bruises?" must have combined and used a few green herbs or something.
Squid @ Mar 18th 2009 9:57PM
She should make a game with Jade Raymond so they can collectively froth up enough unwarranted hype to guarantee platinum sales.
Nox @ Mar 19th 2009 6:51AM
Daughter of Terry Pratchett? colour me interested.
sZimm @ Mar 19th 2009 9:08AM
quote: "But as I recall, BioShock was written by a lady too, and I never hear her mentioned.."
bioshock was loosely based on the work of Ayn Rand, thats probably who you mean. the story in the game wasnt written by a woman though... not that it matters, the quality of the story is all that counts.
and i personally dont like the work of Rhianna Pratchett; mirrors edge was particularly abysmal in regard to the narrative, cliche and painfully predictable to the point where i would have preferred the game to simply be a huge collection of timetrial tracks instead. it seems that dice think the same, looking at the type of DLC they recently put out.
quote: "Daughter of Terry Pratchett? colour me interested."
i sincerely doubt any of that talent is genetically transferred. judge a writer by his/her work, not his/her last name or sex...
StalkerB @ Mar 19th 2009 10:17AM
Don't mean to be overly geeky (but who's going to judge me here) but since the site has a Page Rank of 3 it must've been up for a couple months at least, so launched is a bit of a stretch.
Alex @ Mar 19th 2009 10:35AM
I'd still do her.
Dralthi @ Mar 19th 2009 10:50AM
Nothing wrong with a little exposure to help line your pockets with money. If the website helps her get more work then there's nothing wrong with that. Overlord had a pretty good and twisted-humor story and Gnarl's oneliners were hilarious.
I'll admit that she does need to lay off the goth-y photographs though. It looks really pretentious and vain. You're a writer...not the lead singer of Creed.
CJLopez @ Mar 19th 2009 12:57PM
She looks a lot like the girl thats plays Sonja on "Underworld: Rise fo the Lycans"
