We have two consoles of which both received the E74 error about a month ago. We called Xbox support and talked in circles with a supposed supervisor named Claudia. One of our consoles, which was repaired for the E74, just six months back, is now out of support and Xbox will only repair it for a fee of $100.00. Our other console had one day left of support so we shipped it back for repair under the one year warranty. Xbox does offer a service agreement that can be purchased for $30.00 as long as your Xbox is still under the warranty. Although we disagree with funding Xbox for their poor quality product since we have already made the purchase a warranty seems to be the way to go. ~ Solid Planning.

Yep, I got the E74 about a month after my 1 year warranty was up (also post-NXE). Microsoft wanted $100 plus to fix it... Like others, mine was fixed with the x-clamp fix. The whole thing has put a bad taste in my mouth for Microsoft. I will NEVER buy another one of their gaming systems. Furthermore, despite being a very loyal windows guy all my life, I think my next pc will be a Mac... F*** you Microsoft!

Bullshit just got it new on 12/25/08. they say they cannot verify that since circuit city went bellyup. well iam going to the local bestbuy with a sign and picture of the E74 message telling people not to buy MS products or xbox games or xbox live accessories.

I have already made the change to ps3 only buying microsuck titles that are exclusive and that I deem must have and I must say its nice to be able to play without worrying about whether or not my console is going to turn on and work properly currently I am on my 6th xbox360 console and my last, this one is already making wierd whinning and buzzing noises I'm guessing its the disc drive but regardless if this one goes I am not replacing or repairing or dealing with microsoft ever again.

I feel key words( I meaning me, and feel expressing my emotions through my expierences and my own logical conclussions) that microsoft (whom I dubbed microsucks) has pulled off the greatest con of the century they have released a system that revolves around very strong emotions competiton and friendship everyone wants to compete in some way shape or form as well as fit in, and microsucks has given us the means to that competion and that commodery we seek. Xbox live is by far one of thee best online communities for gamers to compete and unite unfortunately they rushed the console and didnt take the nessessary percautions to make sure it was a long lasting thing, they were merely to concerned with lining their pockets and now the 360 is reportable the most defective console ever, while I do believe live will live on I also believe serious gamers will realize that 360 burns more cash than nessessary sooner or later 360 fans will be forced to pay up to fix thier dieing machines and they will realize the money they have spent on repairs and accessories on a 360, is all included in a ps3 purchase first off 360 came with a 12 gb hd not 20 with all the preinstalled junk in the system it really lacked the space for all your save files from the door and in order to make it media friendly(for your downloaded movies and shows as well as music and photos not to mention your games full or just saves you will need to upgrade to a 120gb + sooner or later and as of now they are an additional $150 bucks you may be able to find it cheaper but lets continue replacing your cheapy 360 headset everytime one breaks runs anywhere from 10-50 bucks depending on your choice of headgear. (I've spent about 100+ altogether buying 2 wireless ones and a cheap reg one which only come with a 90 day warrenty as do all microsucks accesorries), lets not forget you need those plug and play kits unless you want to continue buying batteries for your controller thats 20+ bucks depending again on the route you take, and god forbid you want to connect your new age 360 via wireless internet connection thats another 50+bucks for the adapter, and lets not forget you want friends and you want to play with them you NEED xbox live thats another 50+ bucks every year, All in all microsucks is sucking you dry (hence the nickname microsucks) even before your console dies they have already begun to drain your pockets now imagine a world 5 years in the future when there is no warranty 100+ bucks for repairs everytime the system fails yes halo is nice but is it truely worth it, yes a new microsucks system is in the works but is it truely worth it after the 360.

Now lets take a look at its compeitor Sony PS3 out of the box it has a 60+ hd it is both blutooth and wifi compatible (no accessory needed for wireless connection), the controllers have built in rechargable batteries (no plug and play kits needed), it doesnt come with a headset but it does except blutooth and usb connections so you can get a set or might already have one that works with the system, and with all the money you will save from not having to pay to play with your friends you can definitly get one not to mention the new socom comes with one and the new eyetoy has a built in mic so for the same price you pay for a 360 vision cam you get a mic and camera with sony, sony is by far the better choice they know they are expensive but they dont hide thier fees through smart marketing they are up front everything is included for a set price while some find it easier to buy things slowly if you just save your money and buy a ps3 you will be better off then nickle and diming yourself on a weak imitation and while microsucks sits on thier thrown trying to steal all they can sony offers a far better deal were the gamers are treated with the much deserved rewards of thier hard earned money free online gaming with a community that is getting better and better every day and the same major titles that hit the 360, and some that dont that are definitly worth the buy resistance 2, killzone2, mgs4, little big planet to name a few in the long haul you will get more for your money with ps3 i learned this the hard way being a ps2 fan turn xbox live junkie it was hard to admit my mistakes and I bowed my head in shame when i returned to sony I douted them and now I know I was mislead by a big corporation with lots of money to throw around in developers faces to get exclusive deals and a friendslist to sweeten the pot, microsucks pulled a fast one on me bvut I am wiser I did enjoy the occassional exclusive and the live but in the end they were spending money to make money and were not listening to thier disciples only sucking them dry now I am at peace with sony I have found harmony in my pockets and gaming as well as piece of mind when i turn my console on I am welcomed with new and exciting changes everyday the system is constantly surprising me with what it can do and devs are starting to uncover its true potential everyday, not to mention it has a bluray player built in and a webbrowser and was easy to sync with my pc, anyways I am rambling but the facts are thier do the research and the math and you will see for the same price you pay for your 360 and accessories you can be in gamer heaven on a ps3 me and my xboxlive friends have already made the switch.

I had the E-74 and got on the phone with MS they told me that my one year was out by 3 weeks. So I got online to start the $99 fix and the website was not working so I had to call MS back. I was not nice, or calm and got a manager on the phone he then told me they would give me a NEW X-box and one year warranty for $99 b/c the website was down. I kinda think since it was a 45 min scream fest on my part he just wanted to shut me up, but I got want I wanted so being a b*tch can be a good thing. I will never buy another X-box but $99 for my son is not to bad he has been told if this one dies he will not get another one and this one will be shot in the back yard!!!!

My console got an E74 red light. I looked it up and ended up losing my XBox 360 for almost 1 month in repair and shipping because of this stupid error. It took them 5 times to finally send me the shipping label for my system (because mine was still luckily under warranty). When I got my XBox 360 back it was a totally different system, which didn't matter because I still had my hard drive with everything on it. They told me it was an uncommon error and they also sent me a card for another free month of XBox Live because of my inconvenience. I was just upset at the fact my faceplate was broke (and still is) and that I had to go a month without one of my most treasured systems :) I was stuck playing my wii until I got my 360 back.

I also want to say I have never EVER had a problem with ANY of my previous systems or current systems (all nintendo--wii, gc, n64, snes, nes and sony ps1, ps2) but I am always having problems with my xbox :( i do play it the most though. i think all the systems have their advantages and disadvantages and this just so happens to be the 360s biggest flaw

No wonder the 360 boasts "outselling" the PS3 by a good margin. If PS3 users had to by a new console every year, Sony could say the same thing. Only reason the 360 is claimed by so many to be selling so much more is due to multiple purchases from the same person.

The statistics are completely misleading.

@Dwells55

I am new to this website, but you sound informed. I would like to speak with you via email if I may.

@Cody

While you are right, little boy, that the 360 fails etc - running over boards and comments to say "neener neener neener" only makes you look stupid. Let the consoles speak for themselves.

As far as I can see, there are no winners in the console wars. There are only losers - the consumers.

What is the Joystiq Email? I would like to send them my accounts with this problem. I've always had a hard time locating the address.

Thanks for pressing hard about this. I may actually get my e74 ridden console finally fixed soon.

I think its obvious whats going on here. After The NXE update they simply reprogrammed the RROD Leds into the Error 74 LED. There by screwing thier customers and increasing thier shareholder value.

all I know is microsoft is about to loose sooo many customers!!! I am a hudge gammer and have many friends online. We are all big xbox fans,but have all been through several xbox 360's and are getting quite sick of having to own more than one xbox because one is always being repaired. If you doubt me check with any of the gamers on call of duty4.only because those gamers are the true gamers not playing the new call of duty.My point is microsoft needs to seriously get on the ball with these problems. Thanks,Rep

I had the 20 GB xbox for about 2 and half years i traded it for an elite in fear of the rrod and more memory just last month i got the E 74 error while it was reciving an update with my elite not a year old i was still covered under the warnanty. when i got it back i set it up only find that my wireless reciver no longer worked i don't no if it had any thing 2 do with with the error but i wasn't very happy about none the less. I phoned micro soft and explained what had happened and that i was not happy about having 2 go out and buy a new reciver.

The guy from micro soft then told that when you buy a car you have 2 keep putting petrol in 2 your car 2 keep it going, i thought this was funny i then told him if that is the case then games would be fuel for the xbox if i put dirty petrol in the car i can not blame the car manufecture for doing that if i carshed my car into a wall that is also my fault but if micro soft send an update 2 my xbox and it crashed that is not my fault

I have a new wireless reciver on its way out to me from micro soft

Just got the E74 error tonight.
Looking online, and it appears it is becoming a major issue, with MS pretending it isn't happening.
My 1 yr warranty was up in Dec., so for now Im SOL...
I would like to try to fix everyone proposes and take it apart, but then if MS steps up and honors the 3yr warranties for this issue as well, mine will be void.

I would really like to see the actual number of E74s reported since the new year....

I have two Xbox 360s. One Pro that failed June 08 and one Elite that failed last month. I sent the Pro back to get fixed, it cost 99 dollars and included a month of Xbox live and a year warranty. So my failure rate is 100%. I refuse to send the Elite in to get fixed and want MS to include the E74 error in with the RRoD warranty. Anyone who has experienced a E74 error needs to complain to the Better Business Bureau in Washington State. MS is a member of the BBB. They will take all complaints and MS will respond promptly but will still use the script of it's not our problem and we can fix it for you for 120 dollars now. When I spoke to the MS rep who called me, I stated he lost a long time fan and user of the Xbox. I'm refusing to dump anymore money into MS pockets. I'll make the transition to the PS3.

Thanks for bringing this to light and giving us a place to report this issue.
Directly, or indirectly, your effort has made MS step up and honor the 3yr warranty for E74 as well!
I am very happy, my shipping box is enroute! :)

I bought the launch 360, it's been back twice for RRoD and last week got the E74 error. MS said I had used up my 3 year warranty and needed to pay $99 for the fix. I instead tried to fix it via the x clamp mod and it worked for 3 days and failed again. I would buy another 360 except I think the news ones are just as bad as the launch unit. Maybe these screws could at least fix the known issues so the public would have confidence in them again. Bye bye MS no more $ from me...
