That's not true at all, I have a Wii infact.

I just don't see the point in including it into 360/PS3 comparisons considering the fact that it is aiming for a completely different market... Plus it's already won the race for first anyways.

Seriously, the PS3 is the new Xbox, and the 360 is the new PS2. I own all of them, and all the things I loved about the original Xbox I see in the PS3; standard-HDD, media-capabilities, great set of exclusives, Nvidia GPU. In the 360, I see everything I saw in the PS2; unreliability (DRE/RROD), compromised, cheaper, but more popular.

Just depends on your tastes. It's still the go to console for JRPGs besting the 360, Wii and obviously the RPG less PS3.

It's a deceptive statement. They'll keep making it for 10 years. The PS4 will be out long before then, much like the PS3 released 6 years into the PS2's lifespan, or the PS2 released 5 years into the PS1.

Will you (the Joystiq-reading "you") keep playing it all those 10 years? Almost certainly not. The relevant stuff will slow to a trickle shortly after the next gen console is released. You'll move up to the PS4 just like you moved up to the PS3 and the PS2 while games were still being made for the previous console.

I think everyone this generation is going to push for 10 years.

If they were smart the PS3 would have back compat and it'd be a PS3 *and* PS2 in one system. Which would make the PS3's software catalog go from puny to enormous. But Sony seems to have their head in the sand about this. I've been waiting for 2 years for them to reverse course on this and I think it's never gonna happen.

I think it will last 10 years. You have the tech, and the system is probably going to work for a long time. I surely hope it last that long too, since i don't want to buy another Playstation for a while if they cost as much as my PS3 did.

I can't say the same for my 360 though. The poor thing has died 5 times now since i got it at launch. Hopefully MS gets that part fixed in the next Xbox since I need my Halo fix every couple of years.

The question isn't whether or not the PS3 will do well later in its lifecycle. Of course it will. Maybe.

The question is: who cares? None of us will. We'll be playing the PS4, Xbox3600 and Wiiii. Sony will release triumphant press statements as the PS3 passes the 360, then catches up to the Wii. Everyone will applaud. Early PS3 owners will say "I told you so!" And it will have no relevance to anything whatsoever.

If more developers can tap into the system's available power, then I can believe the ten year cycle. Personally I thought that was just hype, but after having finished Killzone 2, I have to say I believe it. While the controls in that game still bug the hell out of me, it's easily the best looking video game I've ever seen, even besting my PC (3.46GHz Core 2, 4GB RAM, HD 4870).

yea Marty has it right. i really don't understand how people who have knowledge of how Playstation works (the supposedly informed gamers at this site) still feel like "10 year life cycle" means we won't see a PS4 until 10 years after the PS3 launched. that's not at all what it means if you look at the history of Playstation. PSOne was supported for 10 years and the PS2 is fast approaching it with a head of steam. i don't know when they will get the price down but i have to tell you, as an owner of all the consoles, the PS3 is built for the long haul.

i personally haven't had any problems with my 360 so it's all just general consensus but that and Wii just don't seem to look too far past right now. i can see a PS3 being useful for years to come since it's such a well rounded entertainment device.

of course tmac is an expert on fitness, seeing how he owns his own gym and is the personal trainer for such celebs as Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and even Superman! He can bench OVER 9000! pounds and squat 3X that amount. In other words, his body is literally made of rock.

Of course, if any of that were true, he'd know how much damage jogging on concrete does to a person's knees and would've suggested a much more productive workout that utilizes the entire the body and improves cardio, such as swimming

Other people do. I know it's hard to believe that other people think differently than you do and may - God forbid! - have different tastes, but Wii Fit is a pretty fun and polished game, if you don't expect it to play like Killzone 2, that is.

I appreciate your sarcasm and I have read the reports on the negative effects of jogging to the human body. Now, he never said "concrete" and he was never giving ACTUAL advice. The simple point is that you could jump rope, play basketball, do pushups, pull-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks, walk, ride a bike, go swimming or any other physical activity to your liking without getting conned out of an $90 interactive scale. If you need a video game and peripheral to get you into being healthy then you have much larger problems than obesity. Mostly, a condition that has come to be referred to as "Idiot Gear-itis".

Funny enough I imagined comic book guy from The Simpsons.
http://blog.news-record.com/staff/culture/Comic%20Book%20Guy.png

WRE -

The problem with that line of thinking is that it's not an actual game. Doing exercise and measuring your BMI (antiquated BTW) isn't a game. It's an interactive fitness scale that includes instructional software. How hard can it be to polish something like that? It's not trash (IMO anyway) because it's on the Wii or because I don't like it. Rather, it's because it's the dumbest shit I have ever seen thats completely illogical and unnecessary. I don't understand why people even defend it. If you want to defend something like Wii Sports or Wii Play as an actual game I'll listen to you. However, when you cross over into trying to legitamize Wii Fit as a game you have lost all credibility in my book.

Even if it's not a piece of garbage, it's certainly not a real game and its constant presence on the various charts makes it difficult to have conversations about bestsellers.

And regardless of the sports medicine involved and the particular exercise recommended by your physician, you can't possibly suggest that WiiFit allows you to do something you couldn't do for free.

Bissy Boy,
It IS a game. What's the point of a game? Have fun? Get to the next level? Overcome a challenge and gain a sense of accomplishment? You can do all those with Wii Fit. I'm not saying it's my favorite game ever but cut the bullshit about it not being a video game. This stupid xenophobic-esque game definition cherry picking is more "illogical and unnecessary" than Wii Fit could ever be. And spare me the "you lost all credibility in my book of life-defining criticism" line. I'm not worried because I'm pretty sure a hand job will get my credibility right back where it used to be. ; )

thats just it. Its interactive. Just like Killzone 2 is an interactive movie (or video if you will). There is one ending (*SPOILERS*: The good guys beat the Space Nazis) and its basically you going from point A to point B and following a set of events that will remain the same no matter how many times you replay it. The only difference between it and Wii Fit is that your achievements in Wii Fit do more than stretch your E-Peen out an extra centimeter.

tmac- walking is better for you than jogging.
swimming may be the best cardio.
jack lelane , kinda the old hollywood godfather of body building and fitness, swims every morning and looks better in his 90's than most of us who are 13 - 50 years old.

a lot of heavy runners and joggers get knee replacement surgeries in their later years for some reason... hmmm.....

just some word of thought tmac if you were serious about cardio.
you sre better off walking or riding a bicycle.

momptimus- that was funny.. its true though especially with FPS online MP gameplay because the ego's are real big in that ballgame.... but i guess thats just competitive like anything else...

I assure you it's not bullshit. I'm not going to go back and forth on this all night. You said your piece and I said mine. You think it's a "game" I think it's no more of a game than Richard Simmons sweat into the oldies is. We can just agree to disagree on the merits of Wii Fit as an actual "game."

"What's the point of a game? Have fun? Get to the next level? Overcome a challenge and gain a sense of accomplishment?"

By that loose definition the hand job you are giving yourself is also a "game". I'm sure to you "it's fun", I have no doubts that you can take it "to the next level" if your into some freaky shit, you had to "overcome a challenge" to force yourself to do it for the 10th time today and I have no doubt that at the conclusion you "gained a sense of accomplishment" and felt good about yourself. ;)

Moptimus

"Its interactive", "there is one ending" and "its basically you going from point A to point B and following a set of events that will remain the same no matter how many times you replay it" fits into WREs Masturbation game.

Give it up guys. It's not a damn game! It's an instructional fitness DVD with an interactive scale.

how is killzone like an interactive movie? yeah there are set pieces but your experience can change every time. one time, a helghast soldier may pop out of nowhere and pop you in the face. the next time, the same soldier may decide to shoot the barrel next to you. the next time, you might get grenaded to kingdom come.

and wii fit isn't really a game to the traditional definition. by today's very loose definition of game, it is. like they all said, it's an interactive fitness platform. that's it. unlike tmac, i have no problem with the wii. i just think 99% of the games suck when you're alone. when you have friends over, a lot of them, even the shovelware, becomes great fun. but i love the amazing graphics, online MP, and diverse software lineup on ps3. that's my opinion.

Bear in mind I'm not saying that they're garbage for everyone, if people like those games and enjoy them, that's awesome. Gaming has diversified itself enough that it's great that people like different things and that's great.

What I didn't expect was handjob offers flying around at the end of the thread :P

@tmac

Something to consider:

Here in Arizona, during the warmer times of year it can be dangerously hot to exercise outside even during the early morning and late evening. Last August I went out to a driving range around 8:30 a.m. and it was already over 90 degrees. Sometimes it's not only more convenient and comfortable to exercise in one's home, but safer. Also, keep in mind, this is the desert, so we don't have a lot of tree shade on the sidewalks.

But really, the WiiFit isn't much different in concept from those step boards people use to buy to exercise along with a video tape, except it's more interactive and has more uses than just step exercise (or jazzercize? I really have no idea what that is) so I can understand why it'd appeal to that crowd as an exercise tool.

You see, if you try to look at things from other people's point of view, you can understand many more things and not look like a jackass.

just because a console is in third place, it does not mean its doing bad. would you say Lamborghini is doing bad if not everyone on the street has one? NO. but would you say that GM or Toyota are doing bad if they dont have a significantly large amount of market share? yes.

Considering the way to really make money is to sell lots and lots of games for your console, especially when you LOSE money for every console you sell... I'm pretty sure Sony's goal is to try and get as many of their consoles into peoples houses as humanly possible.

They are failing at that.
