Precisely. Wage freezes and bonus cuts are a great alternative to firing and laying off people as long as you aren't destroying your employees' ability to survive on their wages.

yeah dude, my friend works at some billing company for a major hospital. They got pay cuts instead of laying off people.

They gave the employees the option of taking 2% from their hourly pay or laying off 250 people. They chose pay cuts.

I'm glad I work for a company that people buy our products and services because they have to. We're kind of recession proof.

At least it's not like AIG, receiving billions in bailouts and then spending it on employee bonuses.

That's explains why they expected to have a great year, Only The Sony Brand, not the Sony employees, maybe even the Sony brand since the Sony Ericsson is going to be disbanded too.

AIG execs have a clause in their contracts that say that they are guaranteed a bonus no matter how good or bad they are. I need that kind of job. Any exec with some sense of humanity (or sense at all for that matter) would have declined their bonus this year.

Well, I guess not getting more money is better than getting less money or no money at all.
It's cool that Sony tries to not sack their staff during these hard times.

They can do that?

You can actually stop paying people and have them continue to work for you solely based on the promise of getting backpay in the future?

How is this not just delaying the inevitable?

Well the way I see it is this.

Many employees wouldn't mind so much simply because it's better to have a job and not being paid than it is to not have a job at all and be forced to look for one. And in these times, it's pretty hard to find a good job.

They need billions from us, the taxpayers, to help fund those bonuses. Isn't that how things work today?

Just kidding, but really, this is very widespread amongst many industries. That's why it's so bizarre that these large financial and insurance institutions are on the verge of failure, they get bailed out by the taxpayers, yet their high paid executives still get their bonuses.

I picked the wrong career path. I should have aimed at becoming a hedge fund manager or bank manager. No matter how hard you tank the company, you still get multimillion dollar bonuses, even as the government shells out billions to save you.

Basically it's a win/win.

So again, why are analysts and all the fanboys preaching price cut?

I think they all better get together and start praying to every god under the sun that they can continue to afford selling as low as it is now.

This doesn't look good for Sony. This months NPD numbers will be interesting, especially to see if Killzone soled any consoles and to see if the RE5 bundle for the 360 helped move some 360's off store shelves.

2 days, KZ2 released on Feb. 27th. And yes, most game sales happen on or near the release date. Halo 3 sold 3.3 million copies in the last 5 days of September.

Your points aside (some of which I agree with, some of which are a stretch), the point is a game sells most of its copies early on. Halo 3 has sold, what, 9 million units in 2 and a half years? It sold over a third of that number in the first 5 days.

Take a close look at what KZ2 sells in 2 days of February and compare it to what it sells for the entire month of March. It will be almost identical, if not less in March.

This same thing happened with LBP back in October. Released in the last 4 days of October, where it sold 215k. Then in then in the entire month of November it sold only 141k. And for those who go into kneejerk fanboy defense mode, the same thing happened with Fable 2. It sold over 4x the number of copies in the last 10 days of October than the entire month of November.

Very few games release and sell at a steady clip eternally. Three guesses the company that makes those games.

It'll sell more in March than it did just 2 days in February. My guess is around 320k those first 2 days and it might be around 350k for the month of March

I'd be very surprised if KZ2 doesn't sell closer to 500k for February and then around the same for March. It doesn't have the brand identity of a Halo or a Gears, but it's certainly a much anticipated title by the install base, with lots of hype and great reviews. Also, unlike the holiday season, it released in relative solitude.

Chris:

Halo 3 released to a LARGER userbase than KZ2?

I think you better check your facts there buddy. Halo 3 released in September 2007, when the 360 had about HALF the current PS3 userbase. 10.5 million Xbox 360's sold world-wide when Halo 3 released.

So you'll have to come up with a much better reason to explain why Halo 3 sold 3.3 million in 5 days, but you don't think KZ2 broke 1 million in 2 days. It certainly has nothing to do with userbase.

Aka: you kill me accepting certain facts from the past but not others. by your own admission right there the PS3 is doin BETTER than the 360 was at a similar point in its life cycle. yet a one year head start by the 360 is the "end-all" to the PS3

If they're continuing to lose money come Fall, there's no way we'll see a price cut. No company loses 3 billion dollars and then looks for ways to lose even more.

There's a difference between not taking a loss and throwing away a profit, especially if you're in the red to begin with. A $50 price cut sounds small, but it amounts to 15 million in losses per month even during the slow months of the year at their current worldwide sales. If your company was bleeding cash, would you throw away 50 or 60 million dollars during the holiday season? And dropping the price this fall would be even more painful. Maybe you could hope to recoup that money through license fees. They're what, $5 per game? So the average person would have to buy 10 games before Sony broke even?

I just can't see it happening. These game bundles seem the smarter way to go for them. It's not what we'd like as consumers, but it won't hurt them and it gives the appearance of value. And they can position certain bundles to push certain titles. The $400 model should really get an Uncharted pack in soon, if the sequel is due out this year.

if they are going to be profitable next month and even AFTER a price drop they are STILL profitable then they wont be bleeding money for long the wound will heal itself after selling more units at a cheaper price than they would selling less at a higher price

I agree. AIG should have been able to back out of the bonus schedule considering the circumstances. I also think that the Government should have thought of making no or decreased bonuses part of the whole package.

However, without those bonuses the people working to straighten out this problem would likely have left the company.

As unfortunate as it is i believe that AIG played this one right. They still paid bonuses, kept the people who understand the complexity of credit default swaps and the government is the bad guy for forcing restitution for the bonuses.
