Last Remnant PC unplayable due to Steam activation [update]
27
European PC gamers got their hot little hands on the Games for Windows version of Square Enix's The Last Remnant today. Don't be too jealous, Americans -- the PCified RPG is coming stateside next Tuesday. Actually, don't get jealous at all -- according to a number of consumer reports via Eurogamer, the game refuses to accept the activation codes printed on the title's manual. Any attempt to install the game is met with a prompt informing the user the game hasn't been unlocked on Steam yet. More troubling, Steam's separate launch isn't coming until April 9.
Hopefully, Square Enix will rectify this verification blunder before the Steam launch date rolls around. We heard a rumor that most folks don't appreciate not being able to install the games they've rightfully purchased. Weird, right?
[Update: Square Enix reports that copies of the game should now be activating just fine, saying, "This issue was actually fixed early this morning so any technical glitches were resolved within a few hours."

Has anyone pirated it? Can the pirated version be used yet?
Just asking for irony's sake. You know. Superior Product.

Well, that news is kind of not right. Now.
I've contacted the support myself this afternoon, and they told me that someone managed to miss that they'd have to tell Valve to enable those codes before April 9th, and they'd resolve it in some hours once people at the Steam support start working. And they did, and I activated my copy three hours ago. ^_^

get rid of DRM already.
its expensive.
its bothersome for your customers.
its a burden on your support team.
it doesnt prevent piracy.
having lower prices or cool pack-ins as a result of not having to pay starforce or securom for "protection", MIGHT ACTUALLY REDUCE PIRACY.
its so elementary, you would think a ten year old kid could see through it.
the worst part is, blunders like these may scare good developers like square away from launching their products on pc. last remnant may not be a top tier game, but who is to say what goodies might follow - if they see some success on the platform.

Steam DRM is free.
And, the way Steam DRM works, it does prevent piracy. It's impossible to pirate a Steamworks game before the release date as binaries essential to play the game are not included on the disc, but rather are downloaded after you verify the game.

Aww...how little do you guys know.
Steam DRM is actually pretty easy to pirate for once you set it all up correctly. It's just that getting a cracked client is something way beyond the abilities/lazyness of the 95% so called point & click torrent pirates so the general populace believes the myth that Steam cannot be broken.

I never said Steam DRM couldn't be cracked--it can be, but the procedure is sometimes more complicated than most other DRM solutions. I said that a game cannot be cracked before its release date due to how the Steam DRM works.

Wait, so is the retail version just a disc with the Steam download on it?

No you install the game off the disc, but it activates through your Steam account in order to play, like any Valve game.

Well, that's what I mean, basically. So The Last Remnant is only available through Steam, huh?
Well, that sucks.

OK, cool.
But I'd rather just have a straight-up .exe with no DRM attached.
