Atari has released a new developer diary video for Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. The video centers around the game's story, which the developers at Starbreeze consider the next chapter in the Chronicles of Riddick saga. The video also spends a great deal of time talking about the drone enemy. The drone is essentially a cyborg with rudimentary AI that can also be controlled remotely. Kind of a crappy life, really.
Finally, the video highlights the different ways the game can be played. According to the developers, it's possible to play the game guns blazing or in a stealthier manner. Us, we'll probably opt for the method with the heaviest use of Riddick's razor-sharp "ulak" blades.
i had the demo, it looked all smokie.....maybe it's the game, but oh well, i didn't like it that much....i would have to rent it first and see the whole game....
omg that is not the same game that we got the demo of on the psn. it looks way better graphically? maybe its because its the 360 version and we getting ripped off. plus my demo favoured 1080i over 720p
Played the demo on PS3, found the engine to be pretty fond of dropping frames and getting bogged down easily. Plays like yet another bad port. It was kinda fun at times though, but if there's a sneaking aspect why is there no cover system and no way to kill the lights in the area you're in? MGS3/4 and lots of other sneaking games actually encouraged you to shoot out lights to keep yourself hidden.
You don't need a cover system to be stealthy, and you can shoot out the lights.
And to me, it played like a game, not "another crappy port." it's starting to really bug me that this kind of crap is more important than the games now.
You mean if it doesn't switch to a third person view when you stand behind something, you're not in cover, right?
Well it is odd that it wasn't implemented seeing as the game does constantly switch to 3rd person anyway, but it annoys me to no end with gamers today and "cover systems", I've even seen people wanting the Call of Duty series to have a "cover system".
Guess what guys, it has one. You stand behind things, crouch, prone and you can lean too. No need to be strangely glued to a waist high wall.
@Levi: "And to me, it played like a game, not "another crappy port.""
Actually I called it a bad port, because the engine doesn't look optimized or smooth, but this is a demo so like all other demos I will reserve judgment for the final game. Framerate drops on games that look this simple are not excusable after the onscreen orgy from titles like Killzone 2 or Metal Gear 4.
@ihavepants: Well, that's how things go these days. Games are frequently 3rd person with cover systems, especially if there's stealth involved. I can name at least 7 titles within the past 2 years that have taught us to expect this, and for this game to just suddenly forget the trend, is strange. They could have used a Killzone2 system where it's first person but you know you're in cover without it switching to 3rd person. Call of Duty with cover? Yeah, I think it would hurt the balls-to-the-wall pace, kinda the same reason KZ2 didn't allow cover "gluing" in multiplayer, so that's a bad idea.
No it's just unnecessary and a simplified version of what you already have, maybe it's a console thing I don't know... you don't need a "cover function" unless your game is already third person. If it's a first person, they'd have to gimp the controls to make a "cover function" necessary.
Crouch or lie down, and you can lean... that's all you need. No messy changing of perspective, no being stuck to objects or sucked onto the wrong ones, no being able to look backwards and around corners. It's not about the pace, it's about simplification for the sake of simplifying(or overcomplicating by terrible implementation) something that doesn't need to be.
I'm with that pants guy.Gears of war is the only game i've played with a coversystem that wasn't encumbering, locking to something without giving options is just taking away the freedom of movement that is FPS gameplay. If you want cover stand behind a pillar.
I played the demo from xblm and I could've sworn I was playing Butcher Bay on xbox. It looks exactly the same. It won't keep me from buying this but I was expecting a lot better graphicly. Butcher Bay was one of the best looking original xbox games, I was hoping Dark Athena would continue the trend. I think I'll go watch Pitch Black now.
Well, I played the demo for (Xbox 360) and I found it quite fun and it looks damn good too. The Chronicles has always been a sleeper franchise and maybe this game will break out of that shell.
Apart from some bad clipping (See through arm oooh) and a really weird control layout I switched on by accident (I think it was called classical, whoever thought it up should be fired IMO) it was pretty good (Gameplay wise, graphics well I got used to WipEout HD and Killzone 2 so meh). Had a hard time on easy though, I'm not thinking like Riddick enough probably because disposing of the first swarm of bad guys was tough as **** D:
