New Wolfenstein trailer and info exclusively from GameTrailers TV
Geoff Keighley and co. got the scoop on the newest trailer and a ton of info for the upcoming Wolfenstein game from Raven Software on last night's GameTrailers TV. The game, unsurprisingly, seeks to bring back most of what we remember from the classic id Software title, from main character B.J. Blazkowicz to the gauntlet of Third Reich baddies taking aim at B.J. along the way. This may or may not be a good thing, considering when we last saw Wolfenstein at the NY Comic Con, we were less than impressed.
Additionally, thenext-gen current-gen update to Wolfenstein brings with it some new weapons (a particle gun that vaporizes enemies, for instance) as well as a twist on the gameplay called "the veil," which the game's creative director, Eric Beissman, describes as, "An alternative reality that sits on top of where we live." From what we can glean from the gameplay in the video, this "veil" business seems to be Wolfenstein's version of bullet-time, as well as a means to employ various powers.
To find out everything Mr. Keighley discovered, peep the interview with Beissman after the break. Oh, and yeah, no mech Hitler! Seriously?!

DAMN!!!! this game looks so insane, i really want it already!
sc00by_y00 @ Mar 22nd 2009 12:32AM
If the multiplayer is 3/4 as good as the original RTCW I am buying it on launch for PC I dont care about single player and I doubt the mp will be good enough on a console..
Kenkaze @ Mar 21st 2009 2:39PM
I noticed a lot of people on the Gametrailers comments complaining about the game not looking very good. I just want to say to anyone who thinks that that the game is not yet finished and there will definitely be graphical polishing before the game is released
fiki lol @ Mar 21st 2009 2:44PM
Now, I absolutely loved the Wolfenstein series. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was one of my favorite games. I played it thoroughly and consider it to be one of the better games of its time(albeit DOOMish). I thought it was an excellent game; the scenarios and situations were in fact occult and ridiculous, but to a perfect degree. Nothing ridiculous and too far-fetched. It was a genuinely enjoyable game I thought; everyone I spoke to who played this game thought it was a unique delight. A great singleplayer.
But this veil shit is ridiculous. The dev guy doesn't even sound like he cares for the game. New "Powers and things." UGHHH
MaliceMajorE15 @ Mar 21st 2009 3:00PM
everything he said about the games features was so cliche'd. it seems like it has all of the typical elements... treasure to upgrade weapons and powers, speed upgrade, bullet time, nazis, and an alternate reality ripped straight from soul reaver it seems. hopefully its guna be a good play because i can see reviewers already stacking up the ammunition against this
wcarnation @ Mar 22nd 2009 10:52AM
Have all you guys never played Wolfenstein before?
It's supposed to be a campy send up on stuff - Nazis using ridiculous occult science, grabbing treasure, shooting up zombie/robot Nazis, etc.
bouillestfu @ Mar 21st 2009 3:11PM
In other words: Wolfenstein = Cliché.
Bissy Boy (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Mar 21st 2009 3:12PM
I think it's looking pretty solid so far. I especially liked to hear that he said "in terms of a release date it'll be wen it's done" because it shows they want to make the game as good as possible and not push it out prematurely. I'll keep this game on my radar.
Huey2k2 @ Mar 21st 2009 3:21PM
Ugh... I love the Wolfenstein universe, and I absolutely loved RTCW and ET... but this just looks so overdone and cliche.
I can slow down time! I can use money to buy upgrades for myself! Whopee!
It's really sad, that video didn't even get me remotely excited for the game...
NukeAssault @ Mar 21st 2009 3:41PM
Exactly what i was thinking.
Psycho300x @ Mar 21st 2009 3:50PM
This looks pretty cool, but I didnt notice if they said anything about it being on PC, because I'd rather play a wolfenstein game on PC...old habit. lol
Turkish Superman @ Mar 21st 2009 5:24PM
They are doing a PC version, but for some reason they don't show the Games for Windows logo at the end.
PC Zone magazine has a cover story on the game too.
Kamizar @ Mar 21st 2009 3:55PM
As long as it's as fun as Return.
phuink @ Mar 21st 2009 3:57PM
Bullet Veil?

"Additionally, the next-gen current-gen update"
ouch, major burn there joystiq. yes this game looks incredibly terrible, but you havnt even played it yet!
Ben Gilbert @ Mar 21st 2009 4:24PM
I don't think you understood me. I was just killing the notion of "next-gen" as we're many years into the *current* generation of consoles. No big whoop. I haven't played the game yet and I wouldn't make a slight like this without doing so. No worries!
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Taylor Swift Defense Force, Gobot in disguise) @ Mar 21st 2009 4:32PM
"but you havnt even played it yet!"

@moptimus early version =/= the real game.
pete @ Mar 21st 2009 4:51PM
@ ben gilbert
thanks for the explanation! sry i ever doubted you!
Rocks @ Mar 21st 2009 4:35PM
kind of ironic how a series that gave birth to the first FPS games has become 'cliche'... maybe not ironic, but what a fall from grace. some things should be left alone...
Popfrogs @ Mar 22nd 2009 1:26PM
I'd settle for a remake of RtCW with a new engine, and that's probably what this is. RtCW was awesome, I can't remember how many times my friend and I played the demo beach level over and over online. With one engineer and one medic you could really clean house if you knew the layout.
SunKing @ Mar 21st 2009 5:57PM
I really, really want this to be good; yet, the veil stuff, the bullet time and the upgrading-shit-for-money gimmicks don't sound that great. I kind of reminds of Prey - in that it employed an alternate dimension - and that's not a good sign. Just make it good, goddammit!
Jeff Unleash3d @ Mar 21st 2009 6:34PM
anyone up for some RTCW on xbox hit me up wiht a message GT: Jeff Unleash3d
Rick Mesler @ Mar 21st 2009 7:07PM
What they should be emualting is COD 4 or Half Life2, Halo 3. Emulate them for their graphics and tight controls and sound gameplay. But what they do is make it hokey and gimmicky... This sounds like Fear 2.
Come on guys. Dont screw up Wolfenstein!!!!
Too late
Anticrawl @ Mar 21st 2009 10:14PM
Yes they should take the safe route and emulate generic instead of doing something innovative and fresh.
JuanDHexen @ Mar 21st 2009 11:24PM
Anticrawl is right why emulate generic, in my opinion out of those titles you named half life2 is the only that stands out the others are just meh.
Rick Mesler @ Mar 22nd 2009 1:16AM
So you would rather this new version of a well thought out game follow some quirky slow time down action and other powers given to a WWII operative....eh.
New and innovative... what he is proposing is not new and innovative. Did you listen to the video.
Juan de hexan the other titles I named were meh... right... what do you call quality games... bomberman or some other jrpg...
Are you even old enough to have played RTCW...
EDIT: No reason for name-calling. Be civilized or get banned. Please and thank you.
John @ Mar 21st 2009 7:13PM
Oh joy another fps, wake me up when is june 9.
Pablos102030 @ Mar 22nd 2009 12:32AM
Oh yeah, what happens June 9th?
Dutchess @ Mar 21st 2009 10:56PM
If don't mind if they implement the "veil" in single player campaign. I only foresee it posing a problem in mulitplayer
Rob Accomando @ Mar 22nd 2009 2:11AM
Ooooh! Blascowitz gets powers to SLOW DOWN TIME! This is so totally a new idea.
And the player can find GOLD and TREASURE?? AWESOME!!
I'm sure I'll enjoy Wolfenstein, but this guy makes it sound like these features are totally new and amazing.
DeadPlasmaCell @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:38AM
I'll play it simply because it's Wolfenstein.. but after watching the video I'm don't have high hopes for it, we'll see though. They should have just re-made Wolfenstein 3D.
DeadPlasmaCell @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:39AM
*I don't have high hopes
/it's late
Knives @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:40AM
I'm fine with demonizing Nazis. Really, I am. I don't mind if you made up an occult branch of whatever government. Demonizing Hitler himself, though? I'm not so sure.
Before you slate me as a whiner though, hear me out - the man didn't HAVE magic powers. The man did not do what he did to please SATAN or anything. He was just a really, really, ridiculously bad man - no fangs, no superpowers, no mechas that run on the Nordic runes summoned by Loke.
Personally, the reason I didn't mind Wolf3D and Spear of Destiny was because it was so ugly and minimal on plot, even back in the day, that it wasn't something taken seriously. Now I see this and think, "Fuck, this is bullshit. You'd think they were trying to justify my grandmother's family being incinerated alive by giving these guys a direct link to the devil."
There's something wrong with demonization. The occult justifies evil acts. These people were motivated by something genuinely evil, concrete and of this world. Giving them the privilege of working with Satan is giving them a get-out-of-jail of being real life assholes.
Robert Maynard @ Mar 22nd 2009 11:06AM
Well said, but I don't understand how your argument makes demonising Nazis okay, if Hitler himself should be spared caricature. Especially if we're just talking about the Nazi's of the Third Reich itself, the rank and file, who were typically little more than incurious nationalists. They serve as powerful examples of how easily people are misled, but I'm not seeing a connection to supernatural evil they have that Hitler doesn't. :P
Unless by demonise you didn't mean literal Satan-association, but just meant the habit of throwing them by the truckload in front of machine guns on computer screens, unhealthy faces contorted in snarls, thick accents croaking out German like a guttural alien tongue.
Jon @ Mar 22nd 2009 4:21PM
RTCW was such a fun game! Had a blast with the single player and the awesome free mutliplayer, I can't wait for this game!
Knives @ Mar 22nd 2009 11:46PM
Well Robert, I did actually mean proper demonizing, horns and all. The thing is, generic Nazis aren't depictions of actual individuals. They are associated with the group, sure, but the major difference is that claiming some individal did something for occult power and magic, whilst in fact that individual is the single most heinous war criminals in history, it simply isn't... right.
I think the reasoning behind the holocaust, Jewish, Gypsy, Homosexual and what not, is that minorities are bad, are what fucked up the economy and the world is generally better off with less of them and more of Nazi Germany. This reasoning is horrible. By giving the same person that advocated this reasoning an occult twist, you've already stripped away one of the key ingredients to realizing how horrible this man was - he was just a man, whose actions are nothing less than the purest of evils invoked from his own rotten heart. He wasn't evil and consorting with demons for magic artifacts, this actually -justifies- his evil in a way; it makes his evil a benign cliche.
So yes, I understand your point about senselessly killing nationalists and unwitting accomplices in video games, but they're still just a generic mob in a video game. Hitler was very real, and his actions were, too. So whilst I oppose censorship in any form, and while I despise seeing the freedom of creativity being reduced by someone's right to bitch over some fence as if it's anyone's business what other people are doing and want to do, I simply state that this is probably one of a very few examples that I personally find pointless and slightly nauseating. Do with it what you will.
Didn't protest in front of iD's offices about the remake and I'm sure as heck not going to raise an outcry about remaking the remake, though.
MadskeetElite @ Mar 23rd 2009 3:13AM
With Return to Castle Wolfenstein being the first game I ever played, well, I first watched my dad play it, then I started playing it, I will definitely get this. Man, I need to re-install that game...I am so happy that this is a sequel and not a remake too! The story hopefully will be as good as RtCW was. That game had everything. Zombies, Nazis, Experimental enemies (I love that dude that had no legs and ran around using his arms!). Wonder if the multiplayer, if there is any, will be like RtCW was. Battlefield like, and all. They should have a Special Edition that has RtCW and the original Wolfenstein included, and then for Xbox 360 owners there could be achievements too. Why isn't Wolfenstein on XBLA but DOOM, Duke Nukem, etc. are?
kal326 @ Mar 23rd 2009 1:14PM
Sweet it even comes with Enclave Telsa Armor!
alu @ Mar 23rd 2009 2:04PM
meh.. if they can't out-do the greatness of W:ET then i'm not interested. i give a fuckall about a single player FPS.
nathaniel_bridges @ Apr 29th 2009 3:34AM
I see people complaining about Wolfenstein being "cliched" and I want to slap the lot of you. May I ask you just what game do you think pioneered what you call "cliche" now? Answer: Wolfenstein. Yes, I played the original Wolfenstein, one of, if not the very first, fps ever. At the time, this was a fairly new stuff, and its nice to see the game hold to its roots even though its been years now since the original Wolfenstein came out.
jst @ May 20th 2009 7:35PM
I'm confused. Do we need another Nazi game? I loved RTCW. But, it's time for something new... How about Blazkowicz is a Navy Seal or Airborne Ranger and he has orders to defeat Islamic Extreme Doofusses bent on destroying US? These IED's are all over the world. Great maps are in order... Iran, Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan, Detroit... yes, that's right, Detroit, Michigan. He needs to kill them all to make sure they don't build the ultimate weapon of mass destruction... An Islamic caliphate armed with nuclear weapons (In the game, they nuke Tel Aviv with a warhead purchased from Russia OR China)
ID is the greatest action game creator in history, but they will be history with this incarnation (abomination) of the original Wolfenstein 3D.
