Scratch: The Ultimate DJ: The First Trailer
MTV Multiplayer recently got its hands on the first-ever trailer for the upcoming 7 Studios/Mix Master Mike supercollider project, Scratch: The Ultimate DJ. The video contains a little bit of everything -- some gameplay footage (multicolored buttons on a track), some of the featured contributing musicians (Black Eyed Peas, Beastie Boys and Kanye West) and a few of the characters with which you'll be spinning vinyl (horrendously disfigured urban stereotypes). You can check it out after the break, but only if you live in the US. MTV's embeddable video player absolutely hates foreigners.

Why dont they release a turntable periphreal for these games? Kind of like GH or RB? I have a set of USB turntables that work on the PC, I wish those would work with this game.
NukeAssault @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:28PM
Sounds like you need to buy Beatmania. =P
Jeff @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:31PM
Um, they are.

IT'S A SHAME THAT THERE REALLY ISNT ANY DANCE/HOUSE MUSIC BUT IM SURE THAT THERE WILL BE IN TIME AS. WHEN I FIRST HEARD THEY WAS MAKING THIS AND CALLED HERO DJ, I EXPECTED THERE WOULD BE BUT I WILL JUST WAIT.
MystileArmor @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:24PM
I'm excited to know horrible music gets it's own game! (Beastie Boys excluded)
CHICHO13_420 @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:28PM
sounds like somebodys shooting for HATER OF THE YEAR
Martin @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:28PM
"I'm excited to know horrible music gets it's own game! (Beastie Boys included)"
Fixed that for you. At least it makes sense to have them in this game.
Markez @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:34PM
So many ways to insult someone who thinks hip-hop is garbage music with the exception of Beastie Boys... Must... Resist...
MystileArmor @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:34PM
Ok well let me put that straight; Beastie Boys aren't great or anything, but they are not horrible.
Now Kanye West just makes me vomit like the Exorcist chick after some Taco Bell gone bad.
PR0F3TA @ Mar 22nd 2009 6:50PM
ohh ok i get it, You like the white man but hate the black.
the black eyed pea's actually had good music back then...
ryuk @ Mar 22nd 2009 7:07PM
opinion is not fact, so you can't say it is horrible, you can say you think it is horrible, i once said i think metallica is terrible and got completely flamed for no reason, even though i did not state it as fact, as you just did
anyways, this is the first time i have ever even seen this game, and i am a huge beatmania fan and can't wait for this, now i can to stop spending $5 a day at the arcade :)
emirabal @ Mar 22nd 2009 7:26PM
Wow, horrible music, yeah, i wont get into the music argument with you, but to say that it gets its own game, interests me, you were probably one of the people who were trashing 50 when the news came out about his game. I dont need to say more but ignorance always seems to rear its head back on to these forums.
You know, how come no one complains about barbie horse adventures being made (besides that the stiq doesnt report that news)it works both ways, point is THERE IS AN AUDIENCE FOR IT, and just cuz its not you, does not mean you have to hate on it.
The other words i want to call you just would get me blocked from the stiq and i like this site even though i dont always agree with all the comments
EDIT:Just chill out and you won't get in trouble on the site. Try not to take other people's opinions personally and everything will be alright.
Jay @ Mar 23rd 2009 8:27AM
Rakim is horrible? You should learn more about the genre because that just makes you look stupid.
coolforever4537 @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:53PM
This game looks like the U.S. version of Beatmania. Can't wait for it. :)
themissing @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:27PM
oh boy. i love how the 'scratching' sounds in the trailer are completely out of sync with the "music". too talentless or rhythmically inept to play guitar hero? here, play this garbage.
Hydrophobicfish @ Mar 22nd 2009 4:31PM
Because when I think of musical talent... I think guitar hero.
themissing @ Mar 22nd 2009 4:43PM
i wasn't talking about musical talent. i'm talking about the fact that at very least, Guitar Hero/RockBand give you a musical basis to follow, you know, guitars, bass, drums, singing. instead of "wicky wicky...yeah!....wicky, wicky...". thanks for the comment though. go DJ!
MF Doom @ Mar 22nd 2009 6:12PM
Just wondering, you talking about the example this trailer gives, or of turntablism as a whole? Because lemme tell ya, if it's the latter... boy, you're gonna get one hell of a talking to
Markez @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:30PM
MTV's embeddable player sure is a jerk. Think of those poor frogs that can't watch the video :(
They released any info on what the controller will look like? This just seems weird to me with playing along to these songs, hitting certain notes as they come down the highway, on a turntable peripheral. Probably be some good tunes.
Got a nice mix of new and old hip-hop at a show I went to recently; De La Soul w/Lyrics Born opening. Great stuff.
Markez @ Mar 22nd 2009 5:47PM
I've apparently really underestimated the amount of French or French-Canadian readers here. I
Gehodra @ Mar 22nd 2009 6:17PM
I actually had to look up alternate definitions of "frog" to understand what the hell you were talking about.
Markez @ Mar 22nd 2009 6:20PM
Lol, yeah, I only heard the term about a year ago from a friend who somehow found away to use it rather often. I'm just assuming that's why all the minus votes, unless I'm getting that for asking about the controller, or going to a De La show :P
The Baron @ Mar 22nd 2009 6:25PM
It's because they eat their legs.. I think.
It seems to be the law in the UK to hate the French. Despite the fact/probably because they're way better than us.
finnith @ Mar 22nd 2009 7:05PM
I'm Canadian, and I hate the French too. At least the Quebecers. Can you imagine that I have to pay more for tuition at McGill even though I'm in the same country as they are? Bastards.
Bise @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:36PM
about the embedding, i just watched this vid from brazil, no problems here :]
this game didn't impress, hope it's just the trailer.
Eggman @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:37PM
Oh hey look, a Beatmania ripoff with Guitar Hero colors and more than likely unbelievably dumbed down notecharts.
Uggggh.
DarkTetsuya @ Mar 22nd 2009 8:43PM
You'd really rather the game be all 13 star Another charts with 2000 notes each? Yeah I agree Konami would have a suit for this blatant copying of their formula, but if not all the songs are going to be insanely difficult, I'm sure this game could actually do well... *then* get the hammer thrown at it by Konami. :/
MystileArmor @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:41PM
Oh and Markez, I don't hate hip hop music.
But if you call a guy that just takes a loop from a Daft Punk song and garbles some nonsense over it hip hop, well that's your choice.
Atleast in the late 80's/ early 90's hip hop and rap still had a statement.
But you probably call all that Timbaland-techno-crap hip hop as well so, you can go back to listening to all that stuff that makes the ears bleed of people that actually have a taste in music.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:50PM
While I'm no fan of the "making music is hard, let's take shit from the 80s" school of hip hop, I'm not a presumptious enough ass to start dictating to others what "real music" is.
Markez @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:53PM
"Oh and Markez, I don't hate hip hop music." Your initial comment suggested otherwise, to everyone that read it.
"But if you call a guy that just takes a loop from a Daft Punk song and garbles some nonsense over it hip hop, well that's your choice." When did I ever come remotely close to suggesting anything like this at all?
"But you probably call all that Timbaland-techno-crap hip hop as well so, you can go back to listening to all that stuff that makes the ears bleed of people that actually have a taste in music." I mean did you even read what I posted in response to you? IT WAS A SINGLE SENTENCE LONG. How is it you're putting all these words in my mouth?
Hater of the year, how about bitch of the year? Settle down, kid.
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Taylor Swift Defense Force, Gobot in disguise) @ Mar 22nd 2009 4:06PM
really? Do you really wanna pick a fight over whether Ice Ice Baby is better than anything on the airwaves these days? Because if you do, you will lose. Badly.
invaderalex @ Mar 22nd 2009 4:37PM
Well, hip-hop from 80s consited of samples from kraftwerk...
Planet Rock is based on two kraftwerk samples...
You know what would make me buy this game...
Kraftwerk
tmacairjordan87 @ Mar 22nd 2009 4:36PM
I'll take Ice Ice Baby over any "song" from soulja boy anyday, 1000 times out of 1000.
BxGT @ Mar 22nd 2009 4:38PM
Well i know almost all the lyrics to ice baby but i cant name a hip hop song out today.
Bissy Boy (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Mar 22nd 2009 6:26PM
Hip hop and rap with a purpose & message absolutely still exists. You won't find it on the top 100 charts or anything but it's out there.
Check out some of these guys if you want some hip hop/rap with awesome lyrical content thats actually relevant to society. It's also unfair to single out one genre when you have the other genres spitting out pop-rock.
Immortal Technique
Diabolic
Louis Logic
Ras Kass
Joel Ortiz
Apathy
Demigodz
Jedi mind Tricks
Sick Jacken
DJ Muggs
Pumpkin Head
Jean Grey
Brooklyn Academy
Da Circle
Poison Pen

"But if you call a guy that just takes a loop from a Daft Punk song and garbles some nonsense over it hip hop, well that's your choice."
Wow, I think you just disqualified yourself from talking about music right there buddy! You... you do know that Daft Punk's music is nothing but samples, right? And "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" in particular is a TERRIBLE choice to try to defend your point with; Kanye arguably changed the Daft Punk tune more than Daft Punk changed the Edwin Birdsong original. But I'm guessing since you seem to know very little about electronica and nothing about hip-hop... funk is probably entirely out of your depth, right? Well here, let me help:
Edwin Birdsong - Cola Bottle Baby:

Dude, if you don't want to buy Scratch, then fine, don't. But don't get your panties in a bind over the fact that the game is coming out. There are a lot of people, myself included, who have wanted a scratching game of this sort since Guitar Hero came out. And for the record, Kanye, I am not the biggest fan of, but there are some excellent artists/projects listed in the trailer... Tech N9ne, Deltron 3030, Mix Master Mike, I'm sure there's going to be other excellent tracks in the game. But regardless, quit hating on a genre you know nothing about, it just makes you look dim.

Let me help everyone in here. As KRS-One continues to teach, "Rap is something you do, Hip-Hop is something you live." I personally think that KRS-One was and still is the most influential Hip-Hop artist. Bless the Temple of Hip-Hop!
StGermain @ Mar 23rd 2009 5:09AM
@tmacairjordan87: I really really really hope that you realize that ice ice baby is a blatant ripoff of Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie?
captain_canada @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:42PM
Too bad us Canucks can't see the trailer. Off to Youtube we go!
DarkSynopsis @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:45PM
Can't watch it over in the UK :( and had no luck finding a video on YouTube.

The most exciting part is a 1/3 view upskirt shot.
DKShadow @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:49PM
Video works fine from Denmark, Europe.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:48PM

"My First Beatmania."

its great how they show me a UK advert then tell me i cant watch it because im in the UK
Muscular Jones @ Mar 22nd 2009 3:56PM
something i will never understand about these type of games, is why not just actually learn to play an instrument instead of pumping hours into pretending to know how to play one. someone gave the guy playing air guitar a plastic one and it became a hit. i've played the games, sure they're fun with a group of people, but i just think it'd be much more satisfying learning to actually play the songs on a real instrument.
Markez @ Mar 22nd 2009 4:01PM
Because some people enjoy playing video games and don't necessarily want to learn to play an instrument instead? I'm the opposite, and I'll never understand why people keep bringing this argument up. I've been playing guitar for about 15 years, sooooo should I not be playing Guitar Hero again? Or, now that I know how to play real guitar, does that mean it's ok if I do play Guitar Hero?
I mean c'mon, this shouldn't be hard. You can't compare a videogame to learning an instrument, two different things.
FluxWaveZ @ Mar 22nd 2009 4:02PM
Because learning to play a real instrument is actual work, meaning not fun?
