MTV Multiplayer recently got its hands on the first-ever trailer for the upcoming 7 Studios/Mix Master Mike supercollider project, Scratch: The Ultimate DJ. The video contains a little bit of everything -- some gameplay footage (multicolored buttons on a track), some of the featured contributing musicians (Black Eyed Peas, Beastie Boys and Kanye West) and a few of the characters with which you'll be spinning vinyl (horrendously disfigured urban stereotypes). You can check it out after the break, but only if you live in the US. MTV's embeddable video player absolutely hates foreigners.

Maybe because you plug one of these games in and it's instantly fun. No rhythm training, no reading a 200pg manual for a syhtesizer, no months upon months learning the ins and outs of software... just fun right then and there.
To give you an example, first play of Beatmania, I could beat 511 and had a blast doing it. At the two month mark of learning guitar... I can FINALLY play Face from the Beck anime.
You also assume everyone who plays these games HAVE desires of learning guitar/drums/ or even professional vocal training. Which is a damn ignorant stance and roughly the equivelant of saying "Why do people PLAY Tomb Raider instead of flat cliff face climbing?"

All this does is make me wish even more that Konami hadn't sat around on their asses when it came to bringing Beatmania (both the original and IIDX) over here.
I'll just leave it at that, since others have already expressed well enough my own thoughts on this game ("My first Beatmania", BM with GH colors/simplicity, etc.).

Beatmania was released in the US, however, the fact is, it was not pulling in as much as it could have been. I don't even understand how it couldn't. It comes bundled with the turntable when you purchase the game (I just checked on play-asia and this was in 2006, not THAT long ago). It is still true that they did not bring IIDX to any other country. But you have to admit, most gaming companies like to test the international waters with a single product rather than hope that eventually it will become a best seller. To my knowledge, none of these games had real english tracks and is likely to be another reason as to why they did not consider investing in an overseas market (Similar to PES, since they did not have the rights to players names, they had to make names up).
Regardless of beatmania's availability, I agree that this game is obviously a rip off of beatmania with a guitarhero take and as such, I will not be picking this game up. As much fun as Guitar Heroes is (it's the only western music game i have played - call me a hater. i don't care.), i still think konami's line of games such as guitarfreaks, drummania, keyboardmania and beatmania are easily way better than their western counter parts. Given that the interconnectivity between the games previously only existed in the arcade, i hope that they will bring a new line of these games should they decide to release it for the 7th generation consoles since they are internet capable.
I'm pretty sure it'll never happen, but i like to hope that corporations like MTV (since they intend to release this) and musical game developers come together with konami to bring their line of games, not just DDR but the rest of the lineup as well, over to the west for all to enjoy - of course, with the addition of western tracks.
@MF Doom:
yes, beatmania needs MF Doom. Technically, i think they could just bring MF Doom and make a special edition with just the special herbs tracks

You are right, dot. BM US is around (it sits underneath my living room console, DJ table and all), so I probably should've been more clear about when I said I wish Konami had been more on the ball with the game and bringing it to other places, including North America. I really meant that they should have done a better job both making the US version, as well as promoting it. In the end they did not, and we had fuckwits like G4 saying it was a "Guitar Hero rip off", in spite of the fact that the game precedes GH by eight whole years.
Part of it is Konami's fault, really. Your average North American, pop culture-fed schmoe probably doesn't give a damn if your music game has "V", "5.1.1.", "321 Stars", "Do You Love Me?", or any other popular music that has become Beatmania staples. All they care about is, "Well, but can I play Metallica? Can I play Avril Lavigne?" Yes, BM US had some popular music, a la Britney Spears, Jamiroquai, Fatboy Slim ... but no real deal breakers in terms of notoriety. And the lack of any sort of advertising for the game, at least beyond scant magazine clippings and online ads, didn't help to spread the word, either.
Ultimately, Konami probably missed out on an opportunity by not more quickly trying to integrate GF/DM state-side. They could have leaned on the popularity that DDR had brought them, as well as brought to the music genre as a whole, but instead sat back on their heels for the most part.

I'm not dictating what "real music" is. I am merely defending my statement and stating the fact that from what i understand, this game is going to be riddled with horrible music. I never said I hated hip hop or any other style of music.
And the reason I'm glad this crap gets it's own game is that maybe they'll restrain themselves from releasing that crap in Rock Band.
The time and money spend on having garbage music in Rockband could be spend on something I'd rather enjoy.

I hope its good - I love hip hop, but I hope they also add some trance and house as well. I sometimes feel we are left out of the loop while everyone enjoys their classic rock and metal.
I can't watch the video so maybe some of this music is in it.

If you want trance and house, look into DJ Portable Max on PSP. Cheaper to import than Beatmania. This looks to be focusing solely on Hip Hop.
Which is a shame because people LOVE our music when starting their movies/tv shows and really enjoy it during a club night, but fuck it all if Junkie XL ever becomes as household of a name as Kayne West.

Sheppy, I totally agree. I think hip-hop and electronic music have always had a strange, intertwined relationship, so it boggles the mind how people can love hip-hop, but completely disregard quality electronic music.
When I first heard this game was coming out, I was excited, because I thought it was going to bring some electronic music to the mainstream. How naive of me. But hey, Grand Theft Auto 4 had an electro radio station! It would be insane to expect ANOTHER miracle like that in such a short amount of time.

I'm inclined to agree.

Kamizar,.. opinions are subjective too.
IMO Kanye West, Black Eyed Peas suck.
If you like it, good for you. Now you have a game filled with it.
Oh and to give you a clue about the kind of hip hop and turntabelism I do enjoy:
Roots Manuva
X-Ecutioners (older stuff)
DJ Shadow
M.O.P.
Alkoholics
Just to name a few.

Oh yeah, thanks for letting me know, I wasn't sure. Even though thats the basis of an opinion, a subjective view of something.
I don't care about what music you like, I don't care about what music you hate, just stop saying the music in this game sucks. You can't prove that, in fact, I bet most of the songs in this game will be chart toppers. For a business, what do you think would be the better option, appealing to a majority, or a niche?

Otherwise why bother? Just download a demo of Fruityloops for something that simplistic and lame. (And sounding like every mainstream rap song out there today.)

it's great they're trying to put dj into everything just like DJ MAX PORTABLE.
at least this will lead to more iidx players eventually and get hard enough to push rb/gh's difficulty down the charts.
scratch 11dx, GOOOOOOOLD~!!!!
(since there is actually 16 buttons IRL!)

This is horribly bad. Not only is the music selection utter fail with the exception of Gorrilaz, I smell a Konami law suit hammer nailing down on Scratch.
Besides, there's no techno, house, or drum n bass, wtf. That's like a fucking staple in any kind of music rhythm game, especially for games like beatmania and DJ-max and its rip-offs.
And from all the note charts, it doesn't even seem remotely as hard as Beatmania or DJ-max. I can probably pass its hardest song with the same effort as I play Level 4 Normals on IIDX.
