Wow, definitively this is the best coverage I've seen so far regarding Niel's presentation. He makes some valid arguments regarding the iPhone's revolution (being honest, I never tried games for mobiles, until now).

Keep up the good work, Joystiq!

The iPhone sucks compared to the DS and PSP, because it does. It's not very good.

Well there is Neil's articulate, researched, and thorough presentation outlining a strong argument for gaming on the iPhone.

Then there is "required's", well thought out, highly articulated retort. I think I'm going to go with Niel on this one.

Hey now don't be getting your panties all in a twist. Neil labeled those that disagree with him "haters" and I was just saying what he said those of us that disagree with him say.

Everything he's saying is wrong, since the iPhone has no buttons and 90% of games couldn't be made for it.

Which portable system doubles as the most common mobile device on earth?

Point pretty much invalid.

Uh– my shitty proof reading aside– my point is–

The cellphone is the most common mobile device on earth (which is why it makes a great portable gaming system).

Firstly, I'd argue that the iPhone is "evolutionary", not "revolutionary" since quite a few people are still able to function quite well without it and it borrows heavily from many old concepts/existing devices (albeit with better integration).

Secondly, has this guy really played a lot of iPhone games? They are constantly improving, but the battery life sucks! Give me at least 4 - 6 hours of playtime, then we can talk about the iPhone as a gaming platform.

My biggest problem with the iPhone/iPod Touch for gaming:

Capacitive touchscreen = no stylus = good luck pointing/clicking with your stubby pinky finger. True, there's the Pogo stylus, but it's $20 and still too large to be much of an improvement over using a finger. There are so many games that would work much better if you could just use a normal, slim stylus to play them. See: FF Crystal Defenders.

The most natural game experiences I've had on the iPhone have been the few that just use the accelerometer for control. Of course, there's only so much you can do with that....

This really isn't that good of a comparison as the people who buy the iPhone aren't those who would normally play portable games or would look up mobile games for the iPhone. So as to say that the iPhone is better because it grew faster than the DS and PSP isn't a good argument as the iPhone's market is completely different than the ones for the DS and PSP. Not only that, but it doesn't really do anything new for gaming so I really can't see how it changed everything. Not to say it's not a good device, granted I will probably never own one, but it's still a good device, however it is not a game device and one should not kid themselves in thinking otherwise.

Come on, the iPhone is a joke of a gaming device, the thing doesn't even have buttons or a joypad. Epic fail for gaming. My co-worker has one, and while the music and internet features are very cool, most of the apps he has on it are complete and utter garbage. And people think Wii has shovelware and is gimmicky? Most of the games on iPhone are so casual they put you to sleep. Oh, and this guy screwed up his DS facts; I'm pretty sure the DSi has 256 MB of storage, not 256 KB.

Well, I imagine that the Wii's painful online, the 360's RROD and E74, and the PS3's lack of games have made various fanboys cry over the years.

My iPhone top 5:

- Lux DLX
- Field Runners
- Tap Tap Revenge 2
- Trace
- Rolando

And just from my personal experience, ever since I got my iPhone, my DS sorta took a backseat and I'm contemplating selling it.

Some people just have different opinions on "portable" gaming. That of the familiar system or the mobile phone. Different strokes for different folks. My iPhone is just much more accessible to me, no need for extra carry-on in my pockets.

I'll second the Fieldrunners and Rolando votes. And Edge, like someone said earlier. iDracula is also a lot of fun, and Trism is a great Hexic-type game. And even though it has a couple of minor interface issues, I've played Puzzle Quest on my iPhone more than any other platform.

Also, the iPhone is puzzle game heaven. Blocked, Ivory Tiles, Loopy Lab, Lumen, and TanZen have stolen hours of my life.

it's all down to how easy it all is to use. App store built into the system.

Oh plus it being pretty much the best phone ever does it.
