Left 4 Dead 'Survival Pack' lunges for Xbox 360 on April 21
49
Valve has revealed that its upcoming DLC pack (which is free, by the way) for Left 4 Dead will be available to Xbox 360 gamers on April 21. For the unaware, the pack includes a new Survival mode, which pits the human survivors against wave after wave of attacking zombies. The update also includes Versus campaign support for two more maps: Death Toll and Dead Air. Let the undead griefing begin!

Free?! That is ridiculous! Why not charge $5 like their competitor Capcom with the RE5 DLC? That makes sense... Oh wait, Valve is much better than that.

Companies only charge for DLC because people have to actually work to get this stuff out. It doesn't make itself. And because it is DLC you don't have to purchase it. It's just like buying a small expansion of any other game. If it's a good game I never have a problem with paying for it.

A new version of the game releases on the same day IIRC that includes the DLC as well.

No. There will be one new map (not campaign) that will be a part of the survival mode but not the campaigns. It is a lighthouse area. IGN has a few videos of it.

Wow. I am super excited. I just wish it was coming a bit sooner. For free though I can't complain. Too bad that is right when I start finals.

The 2 other versus maps should really have been on the disc already, maybe it was a disc space issue.. I been thinking that maybe MP components of games should be downloaded (free of course), to reduce compression on textures/sound. just then hopefully MS will release a much larger HDD.. It may be just me, but there are times, where it starts looking a bit youtube, like on Halo Wars cut scenes

It wasn't a disc space issue. It was a time and balancing issue. Valve has already said that they were running short on time to correctly balance the other two campaigns for versus. There are certain things that they have to remove from the campaigns in order to make it balanced for versus. Take the closet in the No Mercy finale for example. They completely removed that.

OK this really has to stop.
Giving something away for free that you have no business charging for in the first place is not a good deed.
This is not DLC. It's a glorified patch. I've nothing against L4D. I thought it was fun, but let's call a spade a spade. All it is is adding support for features which should have been standard form the beginning.

For fucks sake. First it's complaining when something costs money. Now it's complaining when something is free or "Oh noes!! They are calling a patch DLC when it isn't!" It adds an entirely new game mode. Patches don't do that. So please, do us all a favor and just keep your opinion to yourself..

And yet, in spite of all the odds, it is content that is downloaded.

You, squire, are a spaz.
It's new content. New things are being added as well as old things being fixed. So it's a patch and DLC (i think, i don't care for the 360 since L4D is better on the PC).

I gave up on Orange Box months ago and traded it while Blockbuster still gave me a decent value for it. The single player stuff was all great. TF2, while great in theory, is outright busted on the 360. I just grabbed it for $10 on Steam during one of the sales.

I know it's been said that it may be possible before, but does anyone know if there will ever be a PS3 port for this game?

In the interest of full disclosure, I have a 360 only. I'd like to get a PS3, I'm waiting for a price drop.
L4D is a great game. I feel it is a shame that it's not on PS3, but Gabe Newell seems to have such a hard-on for the 360 and such a hate-on for the PS3 that I don't think it'll make the leap.

Yeah, I knew that Newell seemed to hate it, but I've owned only 1 PS3, and my newly-refurb'ed 360 is console #5 on the Microsoft side. Quite frankly, this is the only title that's kept me from selling my 360 thus far.

Generally the PS3 is just not worth the extra development time. Because valve develops for the PC first and foremost porting it over to the 360 is easy, but the PS3 is much more difficult because of how it handles things (especially all of the cores).
So it probably will never come over to the PS3. It just really isn't worth the time for Valve.

Technically, there's no reason there couldn't be a port. Legally, there's probably a piece of paper stopping it. The port may even exist already, given the recurring rumors, but as with any port rumors I stand by "no" until there's a press release. I wouldn't hold my breath for it.

Valve could always let EA port - and consequently ruin - it.
I feel sorry for PS3 Orange Box owners.
But yeah, don't hold your breath on a PS3 version any time soon.

I just don't see Valve doing a PS3 port anytime soon. I just don't think the cost of doing the port would outweigh the potential revenue Valve would get from the game.
I'm sure when Valve does make their next major engine, not an incremental update to source as they have been doing, they will support PS3. Then again by that point maybe the PS4 will be near release, 2012 anyone?
It is nice to see Valve sticking to the free DLC policy, I wish more developers/publisher would reward their customers for holding on to their games and not reselling them.

Is there a way to make the engine kill you?! I have tried over and over (on the 360) and my body moves out of the way without me moving and I never get hit... Sad times. I wants to be engine killed

How hard is it to take existing maps, transform then into versus mode, and allow them to be downloaded?
I think that all 4 campaigns should have been available in versus from the beginning. I have downloaded some good custom campaigns, and many of them INCLUDE VERSUS modes with them...
Now, the survival mode, and the SDK (pc version), might take a little longer to develop, but why not release it at a later date than the other two "new versus" maps?

crybabies.
This isn't a DLC that was released right when the game came out.
I'm sure they took a little break after L4D came out, then they started on this pretty quickly. It takes time.
Yes it should have been available on all 4 maps from the beginning. Valve WANTED that. It's not like they held these two back on purpose to release months later and charge you $15.
No.
They started working on it, and now are releasing it for free and people still aren't happy.

Thank God I'm a PC gamer.
Title says for Xbox 360, right? From past experience, us PC gamers would probably have that patch a bit earlier? Like those Versus fixes. Took Valve to patch them up in the 360.
Also, to anyone who's whining about "content that should've been on the disc already", Valve cares enough to actually give us new content. Why, they could just sit in their wads of cash and do nothing (Well, console versions of The Orange Box...>_>).Instead, they fixed the two up for multiplayer. Balancing issues would have risen up if they didn't modify the maps to suit.
In a little side note, "Valve Time" is at work here. Weren't we suppose to get these patches "before or on" Christmas :P Ah well, better late than never.
