The E74 error is actualy what killed my first xbox360 of almost 3 years. It was manufactured in January of 06 and I bought it in April of 06.

Never had a problem until a few months back while I was playing Star Wars: TFU and then dome DMC4 when I had graphical glitches and artefacts on my screen. I knew what was up and with in the day it just died. So I ended up just getting a new arcade xbox360 and swapping the HDD and lisences.

(Couldn't send it in since I already opened the sucker up out of curiostiy long before)

Once again the 360 has failure issues. When will the 360 fanboys wake up? I mean people can play whatever they want but the RROD should have been enough to kill the 360 and now with this whole issue when is everyone going to finally say enough is enough?

Since the release of the system I've had my 360 RROD twice but it was replaced free of charge in less than a week both times so I've been happy...what's not so nice is that my sister bought a 360 that now has this E74 message and support says she would have to pay $90 since warranty doesn't cover it. I was going to suggest she buy a plain arcade model instead, but with all these "news" about the error lately, do you guys think Microsoft might take responsibility for this? I know people give them a rough time for the faulty hardware, but I was pleased with the 3 year warranty extension when the RROD thing got tons of coverage, I guess I'm just hoping Microsoft owns up to this fault as well...

Tell them it is intermittent RRoD and E74 and they'll cover it under the three year warranty.

I love Cody and all's comments. My Launch 360 and my Wii I bought in Feburary 07 both broke the same week in Nov 07 - so, shouldn't fanboyism say that the 360 was the better machine? ::Rolls eyes::

I have been thinking about this since the first Joystiq article, and couldn't one do a test about the RRoD now being reported as the E74 error, as some claim? By this, I mean couldn't someone get a broken, RRoD 360 off ebay/ craigslist/ whatever and get it back up and running with a removable heat sink (or even "towel trick" it - that worked on my 360 until its coffin came) and then upgrade it to NXE and then undo the heatsink, remove the towel, etc and see if the error is still the RRoD or an E74?

::adjusts top hat:: ah just buy another!

in all seriousness having had a few replacements its a bummer to be out of a console for the few weeks, but I have a ps3 that's getting its share of disc read errors, a wii that acted funny with SSBB, and countless dead satellite receivers. There has to be a downside to the cutting edge of entertainment. Sometimes unfortunately for the sake of mass productions corners are cut, or they decide to use some glue instead of a clamp.. ;D

Thank you Justin for actually getting this story out. No other sites even seem to have reported on any of this and i think we may be seeing a new RROD type problem that affects the newer generation of chipsets. Im not a fanboy, I love my 360 games, I dont own a PS3 but I think its bad when a company cant put a product out that for 99% of people wont last 2 years. Someone needs to be there to say this isnt right and atleast Joystiq is trying to point this out.

how much does it take to convince joystiq that you have the e74 error? for all we know one got it, described it, then legions of fanboys followed suited to all claim to have it to make this seems endemic. i've heard plenty of personal rrod stories first hand, but never an e74 and i know a lot of people with 360s.

for all we know, it could've been cody sending most of those emails under different guises. what does it take to ban that guy? his history does nothing to add to the discussion to the thread other than to bring down the 360 for some sony based reason.

Joystiq, your credibility is starting to wane if you rely on volunteer email polls. Provide criterion to prove of an e74 error:

picture proof with username, gamertag, recent newspaper and of course the e47 screen. even then there are possible holes in those reportings.

either these articles are elaborate jokes winding up to april 1st or joystiq is wanting to become another "gamespot" of games journalism.

if the e47 error is as serious as you report it to be, then follow sound statistics cause a breaking console is no joke nor is a company trying to get away with selling a built in error.

You get what you pay for, unless you pay Microsoft, then you get something that looks like what you pay for but has a built in problem, which is fixed for free until they change it's name.

M$ is a greedy American company, this is no surprise.

I'm going to get my free repair and when i get it back it's going straight to our version of eBay. And the money will be invested in PS3 games instead. Might be just me, but i absolutly HATE shitty hardware. The process of shipping it back and forth just makes me wanna sue somebody! ;D

Jolly good show. Every single time a replacement is bought it's telling Microsoft that it's better than OK to release broken hardware.

Every purchase is a vote, a vote to say that you are perfectly happy to buy broken hardware.

Alright, I got it to happen, again, and again... this intermittent black screen. Not exactly an E74 error, as yet... but if you read my earlier posts it explains similar characteristics of the E74 error.

What I did was I played Mass Effect... and somehow I played that bit where Shepard and her crew are talking to that V.I. Half way through the middle of that conversation my tv goes black.... and this happened three times in a row. At the exact interval.

Sometimes I do think it is the tv but, it only happens when I play games, on the Elite which is connected via a HDMI cable to my LCD TV. When the screen goes black, all I get is sound, but no function of the TV at all.... the remote and TV's functions cease to function.

The only fix is to power off the tv and turn it back on again... and I get an xbox message (kinda like when you get a play ivite from friends) telling me something about a secure connection found.... this only happens after I power off and then power on the TV.

Can anyone help explain what the real problem is? Oh yes, and this started happening only when I upgraded my dashboard to the most recent update, which was suppose to fix certain, previous HDMI TV problems on some LCD tv sets.

I actually got my 2nd E74 yesterday while playing RE:5. Video went all distorted and I just knew what was up having had this before. The towel trick will work and put off having to get a new system for a few days at a time usually, but this seriously sucks. This is my 3rd system as the first was an RROD before they actually covered that and my second was also an E74. Every bone in my body does not want to get another Xbox but I will today after work because I just have too much invested in it. I do have a PS3 as well and love it, but it is not a valid replacement for a 360 (nor is the 360 a fine replacement for the PS3.) I just can't be a 1 system person as they are too different from each other.

Great article Joystiq. Keep the heat on MS and make them offer a 3 year warranty on E74.

I'm a former 360 owner that had a 10 month old console E74 last December. I sold that console and got a PS3. I loved playing Lost Odyssey, Tales Of Vesperia, and Forza 2, but I refuse to support a console that won't last a year.

BTW, my gamertag is weltall1028, if you don't believe I actually owned a 360.

2 years ago before my Xbox 360 I got when they were first available, got the E74 error. I'm not sure how but after having the usual gamer fit over the incident, the next day I turned on my 360, and it was fine. There was no big error on my TV, and it played just fine. It was about a month later that I got the RROD sickness. Now I'm not saying theirs a connection between the two problems, however, I will say that I have gotten E74 with both my new and old Xbox 360 and they both somehow survived it, so perhaps its just an error that pops up once in a blue moon since my two friends have gotten the E74 error, and only one of them didn't survive the error. Once again I don't know how it works, but both me and my friends console have survived the E74 error, so their is hope.

THAN i played Left 4 Dead and the same day went out and bought a 360 Elite LOVE IT no E74 yet either so its good... The only thing that i dont like is that it can only produce a 720P signal, and produce an Upconverted 1080i. AND I KNOW that im gonna here rebuttles against that too but you cant fit all the data required for a 1080P game on a DLDvD other than that GO XBOX.

I'm going to buy either a PS3 or a 360 this summer (when I've got more money) and for a little while now I've been leaning toward PS3 and now I think I'm pretty much decided.

There are a ton of game on XBox that I would love to play, plus the exclusive DLC that Xbox has a way of snagging, but PS3s don't break on a constant basis like these things do.

And I watch lots of movies and want Blu-Ray.

Yawn....this whole E74 thing is getting blown out of proportion.

Thanks Joystiq.....I used to respect you but to make such a big issue out of nothing is ludicrous.

Nothing is really statististically significant until the percentage hits ~5%......so unless 5 % of the guesstimated 29.47 million (From VGChartz) 360 owners start complaining about E74.....thats 1,473,500 people.....ITS NOT STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT.

I bought my 360 in December of '06, and had periodically gotten the E74 error. It wasn't much of an annoyance, simply restarting the console once or twice got around the problem. I hadn't noticed an increased frequency in E74 with my console since NXE launched, but I have followed this story since it came to light.

Just in the last hour, I had turned my console on and was in the process of sending a message to a friend when i heard a loud shot of static from my speakers. The screen looked somewhat jumbled, so I powered my console down for a few seconds and turned it back on, only to get the RRoD. I've got my coffin order in now. It's not the way I wanted to spend spring break :(.

I'll have a hard time believing there is no relation between E74 and the standard RRoD failures now...

I've been saying it for a while, but what would stop MS from changing the system software to give a different kind of error code for a hardware than the 3 red lights? That would basically obsolve them from having to repair your system outside of 1 year, seeing as how if your system has 3 red lights it's covered for 3 years.

NXE goes live, part of it tells the system to display E74 errors instead of RROD...?

Conspiracy maybe? Likely not. Seeing as how I just got an RROD two weeks ago and I've been using the NXE since it came out.

So, Cody, you're willing to give up on the biggest and best overall library of games this generation just because there's a chance of it breaking? How do you live through life if you avoid anything that has a chance of breaking?

LOL...so if you walk into a library and can't read, what good is it to waste time standing around.

I could have every game Xbox has to offer, if I can't play them then I have a collection of $60.00 freezbies,...oh yeah hours of fun.

My dog loves to play with the Halo 3 disc the most, he's really getting some hardcore exercise, we even go to the dog park to get on some multiplier action...

"How do you live through life if you avoid anything that has a chance of breaking?" - Now that's just obvious dumb logic, who buy's anything with full knowledge that it will break? Its called denial, you feel bad you just spend money knowing you bought a lemon, but used the "things break" excuse to make yourself feel better about your purchase....Hell condoms break, don't make me feel better about the purchase.

Why complain about the PS3 price when you just spent the money on not playing anything? Many of you seem to like investing into the postal service and enjoy waiting the 3-6weeks like Santa Clause is coming to town and bringing a shiny new Xbox360 with him.

How much would you pay for a pile of crap...horse manure is about $75.00 a bag, and at least I can fertilize my garden...

I like the Xbox360...its like having a long distance relationship, she's always back and forth and when she is home she don't wanna do sh*t.

I'm just being funny everyone...don't take it personal.

I got a phone call from Corporate Headquarters of Microsoft yesterday. I guess I know who to complain to. I emailed a group of executives there. To sum up the phone call, Derek told me that they in fact would NOT fix my Xbox problem. I told him about the recent spike and his claim is that they were "isolated incidents" . He said if and when they extended the warrant on the ONE ring of death like the current THREE rings of death, then he would contact me. If you know of people that have the E 74 problem, then here is his contact info:

WOW, good info DWells55, great post there.

I wouldn't be surprised if MS changed the codes just to get out of their warranty responsibilities.

After 2 failed Xbox 360s I gave up. I'm waiting on a really new architecture to come out, if ever. Until then I'm chugging along with my PS3. But I do miss Halo 3 a lot. Maybe when the 45nm chips hit I'll give it a try.

Come on MS, get your act together. Can't you contract with like Dell, Asus, or Acer to design a cheap box?

I am another statistic/victim of the e74 error.

Please keep up with this campaign joystiq.com - We have had three 360s in our house now. The first Microsoft would not fix because it wasn't 'the right kind of error' and now my 360 has this e74/1022 error.

I feel it's only a matter of when, not if my bro's second 360 will also die to make it a hattrick of fail.

What is happening here is not right and something needs to be done about it.

You have my full support.
