Why does every game there's days need to be an MMO anyway, i guess could have a good MMO type of gameplay with like npc's, people actually trading pokemon and such but pokemon is fine the way it is, isnt it?

And yea it would be awesome if they try and "innovate" rather than just rehash the same old game over and over.

i seriously GOTTA CATCH EM ALL before i become a pokemon master.

I feel like I must be the only one who gets what they're saying.

Every time I log onto Gamefaqs or IGN, or even dedicated Pokémon forums I'm swamped with trade requests from absolute strangers, chances to battle people I've never met face to face. Can anyone really get satisfaction out of winning against Tyranityrant2000, even given the advent of voice chat (which I'll add, most people seem pretty adamant about NOT using)?

To me, Pokémon is all about communication and adventure. If I didn't have friends to play with, I wouldn't, and its for this very reason that I'm waiting until Tuesday (and the soonest I can spend any sizable chunk of time with my two best friends) to open my brand new, pre-ordered copy of Pokémon Platinum.

Speaking as a Pokémon enthusiast, and someone who's entertained several MMO's for some time, I'd think that anyone who wants a Pokémon MMO has never felt the satisfaction of a perfect trade. I'd think that person has never shook hands after a battle, win or lose, and said with a smile on their face, "Good game." Because that's what the Pokémon franchise has always been about, the thesis of the Pokémon world — and forget for a moment all the notions of capitalism and satirical BS, we're talking about a TOY company and to deny that the artisans involved therein might have some other incentive than the bottom line might not be so ludicrous! — is friendship.

The answers to the highlighted questions have brought to my attention that Pokémon still has its soul. Its brought a smile to my face, and I for one can say that I am glad that there are no plans to make a Pokémon MMO and hope that it stays that way for a long time!

Hear, hear!

Now, I wouldn't mind a Pokemon MMO, if done right. But for so long, I've felt that Pokemon is right at home in its current state--in my pocket. Despite the limitations placed by Nintendo on online play, I've still managed to communicate with other people, acquiring Pokemon I couldn't and battling strangers, all the while meeting new people.

In short, I'm satisfied with the state of Pokemon right now.

(Oh...and if anyone would like to see my Pokes (perhaps some trading too?)...http://www.marriland.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=95&t=190583)

Wait, Pokemon still has it soul? After 10 years of rehash? If any other game came out like that, people would hate all over it. I mean, say what you want about the game (I've never played it, but it must be fun to sell so well), but you can't say that they don't care about the bottom line when they've played it completely safe since the beginning, taking no risks and basically porting it from handheld to handheld. They lucked upon a sweet game mechanic, and have done nothing beyond that.

I don't see why playing against someone online would be that much different, if implemented properly. You'd probably meet some people and make new friends (hell, people get married in WoW), and it seems like such a logical step. And how about this, if you don't want to play online and are happy with your friends, then don't. But if I ever wanted to try out this community thing you are talking about (which I assume you can't really get playing on a handheld by yourself), I have no friends who are interested in it, and the internet is the only place I'd be able to do so. As other people said, not every one is either still in grade school or has friends around who are interested in said things, so why deny others the opportunity to experience your enjoyment?

I've made plenty of perfectly good friends over xbox live. XBL happens to be one of the least friendly atmospheres around and I've made friends on it that I would consider crossing the country to go visit. In fact, one of my roommates friends that he met on XBL came 5 hours to visit us this past weekend. If I can meet someone on XBOX Live and consider them my friend, then I believe I can just as easily do so in the world of Pokemon and get just as much emotional gratification out of a trade or battle as I could if I met them in person.

You are right though. A good amount of people don't take the connection they have with a person through a game seriously. Many ignore communication functions or are abusive of them. It all just comes down to finding the right people and giving off a sense of friendliness yourself.

@ aristokrat

You're misinterpreting me I think: Of course they care about the bottom line, I was only saying that I think as game developers, and parents, they also care about producing a product that is important and something that has always been important to the Pokémon formula has been communication and friendship.

Playing against someone online is radically different because the mode is different. You can't see their face, you can't (generally) hear their voice; you might as well be playing a robot or computer. Maybe if you've never played the game face to face it'd be harder to empathize but I think there's definitely something to that face-to-face communication.

Yes, people get married in WoW. Barring how that generally works out (read: not well), I'm sure you can recognize that they are in the minority, and indeed its the same case for anyone who ever builds a lasting friendship outside of the game.

I'm not denying anyone any enjoyment. I think that the MMO model is not a suitable one for Pokémon. I don't think it would work and I think it would change what makes Pokémon unique. In fact, I'd even say that the decidedly "safe" direction the games have been moving in (or not) is one of the things that makes the game stand out, and thats what I love about the franchise. Everything I loved in Pokémon Red Version when I was in elementary school is still in there, and so much more: people always seem to forget about the innovation that IS there, be it contests, double battles, the battle frontier, day and night (or a working clock for that matter), shiny pokémon, animated sprites... To say the series is at a standstill is simply wrong. Granted, employing some artistic license in the story-telling department is something I think we'd all appreciate.

Ultimate my ass. They can call it ultimate when it has online that actually works and doesn't lag out all the time, a system where you CAN actually find each other online, and more than one boring region. Oh! And maybe a branching plot, or at least something to do other than level up and beat the gyms. That shit's getting old, as much as I love pokémon. Don't mention the contests. They're not really much fun at all.

The first thing Pokémon needs to do is become far more online orientated. D/P has modes that'd be perfect for online interaction, such as the union room and the underground. But they're restricted to local play. Why? Gamefreak seem to have this bizzare idea that you're constantly surrounded by hundreds of people all playing pokémon at the same time. I'm certainly not where I live. From what I hear, you'll scance even find people if you go to the nintendo world center. Well hey, Gamefreak, you're partialy right. You are surrounded by hundreds of people playing Pokémon! It's just that they're not all within 20 meters of you. Do you have a problem with that?

Please, please, please gamefreak, stop being so damned reclusive and listen to your fans for once. This isn't 2001 anymore. This sort of attitude towards online gaming simply won't do. Or even, this sort of attitude towards your main franchise. Evolve for frickin' once, evolve. Your pokémon do!

They're getting there. Between GTS, Battle Tower, and adding Online Underground to Platinum, its getting closer. Of course, with Nintendo at the helm, they'll run up against the limits of how online the game could go right quick, and as evidenced here, they don't want it nor need it to be online-centric.

How did you know? Me and my friends have been planning the Pokemon MMO for the last 10 years. We were just about to ask BOB if he could get Nintendo to look at our design.

Unfortunately knowing Nintendo, even if they would make it, it would be the shallowest MMO on the market and wouldn't be nearly as fun as it "Could Have Been". It's the story of every single one of these games. There are many amazing game mechanics that you just know would make them ten times better but Nintendo just sticks with the same old game mechanics that it knows will sell.

It's odd how EVERY other game company is scrambling to get into the seemingly lucrative MMO market (hell, there was even going to be a Halo MMO), yet somehow they think Pokemon will be a bad idea? Given the number of already built-in fans to the franchise, it seems like such an obvious choice. Other companies are jumping on hugely developed franchises to try to take on WoW (Star Trek, Star Wars, etc.), but this is a video game franchise from the start, so you wouldn't even have to convince people to try something new.

It does make sense. Its always been a social game, and, if we rule out online play, consoles don't have that element.

The rationale behind ruling out online play comes from the Japanese mindset. There's a reason Monster Hunter Freedom does so much better than Monster Hunter main (though both do quite well). IRL gaming in Japan is much better formed than it is elsewhere. Here local multiplayer is just for parties and occasionally tournaments, and online is where real shit gets done, but there its just the opposite, where online is the novelty, and real life is where real shit gets done

I'm somewhere in the middle. I've never liked competitive online multiplayer, only cooperative (MMOs without Player vs Player or online co-op), but i'm in the same boat as most of you, where my real-life friends and i either have incredibly divergent tastes in gaming, rarely have time to play together, or both, so online is sometimes necessary to fill the gap.

MMOs wouldn't work on Nintendo's system anyways with the lack of a hard drive and very shitty online functionality.

Though both Pokemon and Animal Crossing should be MMOs, they aren't for various reasons.

One of the main ones is. Why? Nintendo is making plenty money rehashing old content, why earn the same amount with new content when it's more expensive?

Because you can charge an annual/monthly fee for an MMO and thus make even more money that way.

And since it's Pokemon they could charge whatever fee they want and people will still eat it up.

This is America people. I am an adult. I am not surrounded by hundreds of people who play Pokemon every day. In fact when I first started on the games I thought you could find people to play Pokemon with in the mall, boy was I dissapointed. Practically no one here plays their DS in public. I might see 5 people a year playing their DS in public, and it was even less when the GBA was popular.

This is NOT JAPAN. In Japan yes, you might be surrounded by hundreds of people playing a DS on the train, many will be playing Pokemon. But again, this is AMERICA, NOT JAPAN.

Even at Pokemon events, people get the Pokemon they are giving away then they walk out. There is no battling or trading going on. If you ask people to stick around to do that they have somewhere to go.

The last time I battled someone using a friend code it worked perfectly, and the other person used the microphone, so it was just as good as real world communication its just that I didn't have to get arrested for bothering some kid to play Pokemon with me.

Another thing about America, adults cannot talk to children. Its considered highly immoral and if you talk to a child that is not your relative or your own child. If you do this you are considered a creepy pedophile, even if you only have the intentions of having a Pokemon battle with them and you may even face arrest and get labeled as a sex offender.

Electronics are not allowed in most schools here, so that is out for kids battling and trading together. Our teachers tend to take the side of banning everything that isn't a pen or pencil instead of incorporating it into the learning process like Japan does. Any technological gadget has no place in school. Again America is not the same as Japan.

It's official. Nintendo DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE GAMERS.

It's becoming more and more obvious with the shitspread of casual games they keep producing, leaving the hardcore crowd high and dry. I haven't touched my Wii in Months, and it will continue to gather dust unless they pull their act together.

So yeah, Pokemon on the handhelds is fun and all, but why not try something else? Those multi-colored adventures would be so much better if they were put on the consoles. Just imagine how expansive the world would be...there so many possibilities, but if Nintendo doesn't take advantage of it, then oh well. They will just stick with the if it ain't broke, don't fix it strategy and keep on making the same shit over and over as long as it makes money.

All they care about is money...yeah, Nintendo...I love you too. Way to be an asshole of a company.
