Castle Crashers recovered from a 4-month gimp to be crowned the Xbox Live Arcade "Game of the Year" in the second annual community voting awards. Somewhat surprisingly, Castle Crashers also managed to nab "Best Co-op Mode" despite being virtually unplayable online for four out of its seven months in release. On its way to top honors, The Behemoth's beat-em-up notably beat out its fellow indie nominee, Braid, which was famously dismissed by an American youth spokesperson.
Braid's losing streak continued in the "Best Single Player Game" category, which was claimed by Orange Box cutout Portal: Still Alive (oh right, it has "exclusive" challenge maps), but Jonathan Blow's timeless effort did mange to win "Best Innovation" amid stiff competition. (We were certain Kefling's innovative "use of Avatars" was a shoo-in.)
The complete list of awards and recipients is posted after the break.
And the Xbox Live Arcade Award goes to ...
Game of the Year
Castle Crashers
Best Versus Mode
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Best Single Player Game
Portal: Still Alive
Best Remake
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Best Original Game

I came in here to say this. The fact that BC didn't get recognized at all makes this list bunk.

Braid was quite innovative. Unlike other games featuring temporal distortion, Braid didn't treat the player's power over time as a resource. In addition, Braid didn't simply feature a rewind mechanic. The later worlds open up a surprising level of control over time. Yes, the game features "good puzzles," and it is a puzzle game at heart, but it is far more innovative than any other game that was released on XBLA over the past year.
Castle Crashers deserves one award, and it's the award for "Most Broken Game at Launch." Portal: Still Alive deserves the award for "Best Standalone Version of a Game that was Originally Part of the Orange Box," and nothing more. I also balk at the assertion that SSF2THDR is deserving of the "Best Graphics" award, when Bionic Commando: Rearmed looked so awesome.

Super Street Fight II Turbo HD Remix (and BREATH) got best graphics?
W - T - F?
I was actually annoyed how fucking lazy they were. Redrawing the sprites is all well and good, but a few more frames of animation wouldn't have hurt.

Would've broken the game though. They wanted it to play just like the arcade version, thus each move had to last the same amount of frames.

What, the 360 isn't fast enough to use more then two frames of animation to the background is it?

I find the lack of Mega Man 9 disturbing. Sure it was miles better on Wii with the superior d-pad, doesn't mean it didn't deserve it.
As it stands, I did vote CC in GOTY because while Braid was truly original, CC was just pure bliss.

Braid should had won best single player. I love Portal, but it was originally had on disc. I don't like the idea that it was ported to online and takes the crown away from an original online game like Braid.
Oh well, atleast John didn't go away empty handed.

I'm one of those who voted for Castle Crashers. I guess I was also one of the lucky ones to be able to play the game online on a regular basis with relative success.
Castle Crasher, in my mind, had it all. Simple but fun gameplay. Coop play (I finished the game countless times with different characters with my friends over XBL). The artistic design was also great. It easily ranked as my most played XBLA title to date. Even my best friend, who sworn to never buy a 360, went and bought one ONLY for Castle Crashers. That's just how great the game is.
