Anyone else think Carmack comes across as too smart for his own good?

"Anyone else think Carmack comes across as too smart for his own good?"

I don't even know what that means. He is extremely smart, he is arguably one of the 10 most important figures in shaping the current state of gaming, and he has reaped significant personal and financial gain from his intelligence and hard work.

How is that 'too smart for his own good'? Or are you just saying you are petty and jealous?

No. Absolutely not.

Some folks are definitely fascinated by just what goes into making the games we play. (I am, for one-- then again, I also have a perspective similar to his of late.)

And anyway, he wrote this: "[using the volume controls] would be very un-Apple-like, and wouldn't be available on the iPod touch (plus I couldn't figure out how...)". That's programmer humility-- make up design excuses first, then admit that you couldn't figure it out. :)

Well there is a reason he used to be considered one of the Gods of gaming.

I thought for a second Carmack released Wolfenstein on the App store...I was looking all over for the damn game.

It's REALLY cool for him to release this on jailbroken phones, however I'm not too fond of hacking my iPhone. It crashes way too much, for me at least.

Hopefully this means we'll see Wolfenstien and Doom on the App store soon. I'm dying to play some Doom on the go.

idsoftware.com mentions that Wolfenstein is coming to the App Store. Doesn't mention when.

Jailbreaking has no effect on the stability of your phone, although it allows you to install other software that could.

That he has a lot of experience/knowledge, which is not always true apparently or you might have figured that out on your own.

Just sayin...

It seems to me he is really trying to downplay the fact he is STILL using the Redux code by just complaining about its imperfections.

Yeah! I noticed that too!

It's kinda creepy anyway. Last weak I accidentally found my old Wolf3D disks and discovered Newwolf, which made me playing the whole game again in 1600x1200.

and today I'm reading John Carmack lecturing about that code from an iphone perspective...

No, it just read to me like a programmer complaining about working with crufty code in general. He complains about the Wolf3D code itself as well. It reads more like a stream of consciousness as he was working with the code.
