With another GDC already underway, a new contender has announced plans to jump into the console market ... well, sort of. Enter Tectoy and its 3D network-based console, the Zeebo, which relies purely on downloadable games (from the grave, the Phantom says, "Sup?"). The Zeebo will reportedly launch in Brazil this July and then in other similar markets in the following months.
At launch, the console will reportedly come preloaded with the mobile games Quake, Evil Prey and Action Hero 3D. Before any of us could cry foul, the manufacturers have said the Zeebo isn't meant to compete with the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3. The console will have a constant, free-of-charge connection to a 3G network courtesy of Tectoy's partner, Claro, one of the largest cellular providers in the Americas. According to the console's specs revealed at Engadget, the system will focus less on power and more on providing content to developing and emerging regions -- specifically through downloadable channels to combat rampant piracy.
Capcom, EA Mobile, Namco Networks, PopCap Games and THQ have already confirmed support for the emerging console. Games for Tectoy's Zeebo will range in price from 7 to 30BRL (about $7 to $13) with the console priced at 599BRL (about $264) -- a bargain compared to prices of current generation consoles in the target markets.

I don't know about this. I think I would like it more if it was priced lower, seeing as how it's priced more expensive than the Wii and doesn't even take discs. Then again, the Wii doesn't have Quake, and the Zeebo probably has some stuff up its sleeve that justify the $264 price tag, and I do enjoy the popcap games. I guess we'll just have to wait for this to flower to unfold before we can smell it.

Except this is being sold in Brazil, not USA, where it's a relative bargain.

After months of promotions and speculation, on December 1, 2006, Xbox 360 finally arrived in Brazil. Only the Premium package (with the games Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo: Elements of Power and Project Gotham Racing 3 included) was available, and retailed for R$ 2,999 (~US $1450). Games are available at R$ 99~159 (R$ 159 for new games, and R$ 99 for the rest).
Granted, this is back in 2006 but holy smokes. Guess only the super rich can afford current-gen consoles in Brazil. No wonder someone wants to come out with something cheap.

99 ~ 159 on an xbox game? Only if it's old, or nobody ever buys it.

@Ridgecity,
I do wonder how cheap video games will affect sex life, which is the main recreational activity there. I would glandy leave games for more sex.
Ok, I'm brazilian and that those offend me quite a lot, specially because sex is NOT the main recreational activity. Really, what the fuck? People fuck a lot more in the US than in Brazil, so don't talk shit. When I was it Texas I noticed lots of girls lost their virginity in middle school, while here in Brazil you get lucky if you fuck a girl in High School, (and yeah, I know Texas is not the whole US) so I have NO clue where you got that shit from. And please don't tell me you thought brazilians live on trees and have pet monkey, cause that's what I usually heard in the US.

It stuns me how similar to the Wii this is. From the first 3 letters rhyming with Wii, to the dimensions of the console (with 1 curved edge) and the placement of the power button at the top of the fron side of the console like the Wii. If someone gave the Wii a curved side and painted it silver, it'd be identical to this. Not that i'm complaining, both the Wii and Zeebo are smexy!

Well, I hope this console sees some success. The more market share this console eats up, the more competitive Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony will have to be, which could result in cheaper gaming for us gamers. And I'm all for that!
Having said that, nothing in the article about the console appeals to me personally... We'll have to see what more it brings to the table.
...
So, what do you say when you own all 4 consoles?
"I own the Wiibo PS360" ?? ha ha

Unless you live in Brazil, it's not meant to appeal to you since the other consoles are likely to be less absurdly priced.

What is it with these new companies designing their control so close to existing ones?
Anyways, I hope this does well.

I would totally get a zeebo. I would put it right next to my Wii and hope that I got 3G service from somewhere...jk. The console isn't coming to Europe, N.A or Japan. Also, a major service provider would have to offer 3G for free (or charge) much like Sprint does for Amazon's Kindle.

Price of Tectoy shares at Bovespa stock market: TOYB3 - 0,07; TOYB4 - 0,06.
Six cents for a share that has the preference when the dividends are given.
I'd say, nope, not many people believe on this console, what is a pity.
For those who know: TecToy was once the second biggest toy factory in Brazil, and long-time Sega partner. Once the chinese toys started to invade, it almost bankrupt; now, they are putting all their chips on the cheap Zeebo. Of course, it's R$ 100 more expensive than it should be, but is a welcoming idea

Iunno. People are killing this system, but this could be a great segway into the development of digital distribution in the future. I think companies can look at this business model as, at the very least, a stepping stone to cutting out the brick and mortar middle man and actually do what they've been talking about the past three years.
So by all means, some might think it's a scam for software devs. This is probably gonna be a great model in the future because how can you trade something in that you downloaded? Know what I mean?

A giant cell phone (without the phone) and an uncomfortable controller to go with it. One would think of something better, like that OnLive thing.

It's Brazillian, they can't think of anything better.
Remember, this is a country that to this day still builds the Fiat Uno as a new car. (The Fiat Uno was first introduced in 1983)

It's also where the Fox was developed. we DO and Think in a lot of better things. Remeber there's much more in the world than the A and B social classes.
As for the Mille, it has it's markjet thanks to the taxes advantages. It's a cheap car that sells on it's merits. The Tata Nano will only arrive hwere in 2012 - and the Mille will still be more confortable/with more space than the Nano.

Im Brazilian, but Im really not looking forward to this.
I can picture some patriotic idiots buying this without question, but aside from that I cant see it gaining too much appeal, especially since the Wii took over all the children's brains.
But as odd as it seems, the price tag is actually quite attractive to brazilians, and you really cant blame them... the Wii is sold in a price twice as high as in the USA, which is expected considering none of the big 3 are LEGALLY sold here!
Im quite surprised that very few brazilians realize this.
Oh whatever.

Funny. I bought my Wii legally, with warranty from the factory and from the shop, I have the recioy/ Nota Fiscal. The same goes with all the games I buy - they have that brazilian flag and a "produto oficial" tag.

I think the Zeebo is going to suck. What this article implies is that the Zeebo will be a console for porting slow- and boring-ass cell phone games and I can already play on my cell phone. No thanks, I want something that can play like a console, with kickass RPGs and FPS's and fighting games. Not Solitaire or Freecell or Pong. So far, of the two new consoles planned, this and OnLive, OnLive looks more promissing than this thing does.
