GDC09: Nintendo updates Wii Shop Channel with 'SD Card Menu' [update]
77
At his GDC 2009 keynote, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata will announce, Apple-style, that a Wii Shop Channel update will be available to all. We ran over to the Wii and began the agonizing update process to discover -- an "SD Card Menu" ...? Yes, it would seem that the vaunted "storage solution" has arrived.
"Welcome to the SD Card Menu! Here, you can launch channels saved on SD Cards by temporarily utilizing the Wii System Memory." CONFIRMED. That's right, launch from SD.
If your system memory is full, you still have to delete stuff, but there's now a streamlined, automated process to do that from this new SD Card Menu. It will even choose stuff for you, if you want.
Update: The new Wii system update also adds support for SDHC cards up to 32 GB -- that's alotta Virtual Console games folks!

Does this break the Homebrew Channel?

I guess I finally have to update my Wii system then. Hopefully it doesn't break Homebrew. Supposedly it doesn't if it's already installed.
There are like 8 WiiWare games I want to play!

The only problem now is I've noticed none of the VC games work on HDTV. I hope Nintendo sort that out.

Is half true. Seems to be an issue for PAL users. Not sure why it is occuring to us only.

Am I the only one who is concerned about the possible influx of piracy from this?
I understand that they would have given that some thought, but it just seems like they will get bitten in the arse on this one, and I really hope they don't.

If you have the receipt, just return them and get a better one.

On the subject of Wii features, I heard that leaving your Wiiconnect24 on when the Wii is off will damage it, is this true?

this is great! and it also opens up alot of other opportunities... such as the downloading of "video" and other things like that... at first i didn't think the whole SD card storage idea was all that great because of the small memory size until it was confirmed to support SDHC up to 32 GB.. now thats a great solution and cheap at that.. cuz if you want to go small you can get a 1GB SD card or 5 bucks.. great job Nintendo (even though it took a bit too long)

I expect HUGE sales now that you people, that complained about not having room and don't want to buy games till it was resolved. So you better buy those 3000 points and start purchasing and make Nintendo happy that this idea was pulled off brilliantly.
I never cared for the storage solution, never needed one, but now its semi-conveniant. I would had liked that the SD card menu would of been a channel of its own that lists out ALL games from the SD card. 48 games may not be enough for those that really gobbles them up. If Nintendo doesn't, oh well, I will still buy their downloadable games. Though, now that I can use SDHC cards, that is really tempting, but I still haven't filled my 2gb card that has all of my VC/WiiWare games (I keep another 2gb card for DLC from games like SSBB and GHWT).

I think this DOES work great. And I've found that it doesn't just work for games...but just channels. I moved my Internet Channel, Mario Kart Channel, and Nintendo Channel over to my SD card and deleted them from my Wii memory. Pulled up the SD card channel, and there they were. And they run perfectly from the SD card instead of the Wii memory itself. The bigger things (I tested it with the internet channel and Ys) take about a minute to load up, I'd say, but that's it. I am perfectly fine with that short delay in loading up. Also, I moved my Homebrew Channel to the SD card and it runs just fine from there, too, without being onboard the Wii memory, for those that might be wondering. This storage solution from Nintendo is fantastic, as far as I'm concerned. :-D Thank you, Nintendo!!!

Now this is the big question.......Can I copy my Virtual Console games to my SD card from the Wii in the living room and play it on my other Wii in the basement......
Are they locking the usability of the downloaded software to the console??

Does this open up the possibly of DLC add-ons to existing games. For instance if Activision decides to....will new Call of Duty maps work from the SD card. Kudos to Nintendo for the update. SD is cheap compared to a HD peripheral.

I already know about GH DLC but want to know about larger files like map packs etc.

maybe an option can be copy the channels on sd card and upload on internet (rapidshare, megaupload) then download and copy on another wii

silly nintendo, piracy will run amok now.
this is by far one of the most stupidest ideas i have ever heard of - in business terms.
however, in terms of gamers this will be like a dream come true, but my my - nintendo WILL be bitten in the ass over this decision!
