Update: Looks like we may be wrong about this one as James Stevenson appeared on the PlayStation.Blog saying multiple PSN log-ins are included in the current firmware. Looks like we may have misinterpreted his comment on our site. Our original post remains below.
Looks like a PS3 firmware update may be happening today or tomorrow, folks. We reported details on the upcoming Resistance 2 patch which includes a number of features, one being multiple PSN log-ins. Many of our readers chimed in, saying this is a feature not possible with the current PS3 firmware.
We got potential confirmation of a pending PS3 firmware update through our comments section. Insomniac Games' James Stevenson responded to our post clarifying the situation. "Resistance 2 is the first game to fully log-in two PSN accounts. LBP only logs you in locally, and does not register both accounts as online through PSN. This is a big difference, and what is required for split-screen online co-op with other folks."
Here's the smoking gun: "And it was dependent on a Sony update, hence why it wasn't in when the game shipped." If the R2 patch is available on March 26th, then a new PS3 firmware update may be necessary today or tomorrow. It will have to allow for multiple PSN sign-ins, but will it feature any other improvements? Stay tuned.

The thing is, if they could do those things (cross-game invites, party system, voice messages, etc) wouldn't they have already done them by now? They're some of the most important aspects of the Live interface and I doubt that Sony would be spinning its wheels with as many of these minor updates that add touch-ups to the photo gallery and whatnot if they could figure out how to get the other stuff working.
It's not a hardware thing, but from what I've heard more of a design issue.

Half the things that people demand sony copy from live are patented design features that are waiting like landmines in a playground. And frankly what is the big deal about "cross game invites" If I want to play the game someone else is playing I'll put it in my system and let him invite me, or I'll wait for him to invite me and then put it in the system either way I'm still playing with them. Just because Live does things a certain way doesnt mean they cant be done any other way.

There are "cross-game invites," and to illustrate the simplicity of it I'll give you this handy tutorial:
1. Press the "PS" button on your controller while in game
2. Scroll to the friends section
3. Select a user from your friend list, press circle and start a new message
4. Write something to the tune of "Hey, I'm playing Killzone 2 - get up on here sucka."
5. Wait for him to get on and join your game
If that is too difficult there always the simple approach: call them on your phone.

I wish Live had an option to turn off cross-game invites. It's annoying having a douche invite you to play his crappy custom map on Halo every time I boot up the xbox to play fallout.

Wonderful, I really hope more games add this feature via patch (and future games of course). Especially games like LBP, Warhawk, etc. LBP already allows multiple users but that only takes into account the USER and their gamesave, not the user and the PSN account linked to that user.
Wonder what else this update will include, if anything else at all...

you receive it as a Message same as any other.(dont delete it) go to that persons name on your friends list hit Triangle and choose accept invite. (obviously you gotta get into that game first), then choose that invite and choose Join.
thats how it works with RE5

As far as cross-game invites go, it would be something like this.
You're playing Uncharted. Your friend starts playing Killzone 2 and wants to invite you. He opens up his friends list and hits a button on your name. You get a message that says "Billy Bob wants to play KZ2". You click accept, it prompts you to put in your KZ2 disc, and then takes you straight into the room that your buddy is in without you having to do anything.

Guys, I'm pretty sure he's talking about in-game videos a la Noby Noby Boy except, instead of recording the video and then having it post to YouTube, it would save to the HDD. This would be an awesome feature to include in an XMB update (which, in effect, would make it compatible will all games as opposed to individual games having the feature). Would definitely make capturing gameplay vids much less frustrating and cumbersome.

I think I'll end this thread now...
It is fast in the fact that I, the consumer, am getting features for free. I'm not complaining that SONY slow.(Not that I disagree with MS's pricing structure)
If you had to pay $0 dollars for something, you wouldn't care WHEN you got it...or would you?
Anyway, I guess it is up to the individual(would you rather pay $X to have it now, or wait and pay $0)

Except you paid $400+ for that free service that is free not because Sony wants it to be but because they know it's so shitty, if they DARED charge for it, their consumer base would revolt.
Live is worth $50/year. And you can easily find the 13 month cards for $30-40. Stop whining. I've spent more money on shitty games in 6 months than I have on Live for 3 years of service.
PSN is awful and the fact it's still this bad in year 3 only further shows Sony has no God damned idea what they're doing.
But hey, at least Home finally launched!

On a free service we have home, you have they gayest looking avatars which is a rip off of Nintendos Mii... Where is your equivalent ?
Before you say home is crap, look at what it is doing today... Joystiq staff seem to be getting more and more impressed with its functionality..
MS implemented the camera how many years later after Sonys ps Eye ? it ripped off the eye further more..
On top of that you support the most unreliable console on this planet and you want us to bow down and agree with you ? Are you mad ? seriously.. Look at the xbox360 section.. No wonder you guys are constantly here.. Even the BBC watchdog program has pointed out how shit this disk scratching phenomenon is.. How shit the build quality is..
I know you have to live with the fact that you bought into the hype and bought most of your games on the 360, but that aint our fault.. Let us enjoy our console without your constant barrage of hate, just because yours is broke, dont be so jealous now.
Your invited as well feel free to go to the shops and buy a ps3 and use it, no one is stopping you.. Once you use it then you will understand why we love it so :)

Lolwat really? “Gayest looking avatars…” Wow, you’ve just embodied the typical Sony fantard. Congratulations, the rest of your malformed “argument” response is null and void now.

So what? Sony implemented “motion control” in their shitty attempt at taking on the Wii how many years after the Wii was out?

Bow down? WTF are you talking about? And disc scratching? When did I mention ANY of this. Turn off your Fanboy Defense System and stop spouting bullshit that doesn’t happen to EVERY SINGLE PERSON WITH A 360. Unlike the things I’ve mentioned which happens to EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO USES PSN.
And if you want to get into faulty hardware, let’s talk about those Blu-ray drives failing and costing $150 to get replaced…
But anyway, you idiots claiming PSN is the greatest thing ever are either completely blind to how horrible it is because you have your faces buried so deeply in the collective crotch of Sony that you haven’t seen the light of day in months or you’re just lying to yourself.
It’s marginal AT BEST.
It’s tedious, annoying, downright overbearing at worst.

Bought into the hype would apply way more for the PS3 which I bought on MGS4 release day due to the hype of how amazing the game was from early reviews…which was the most overhyped game of all time probably. Please, by all means enjoy your console and continue deluding yourself into thinking it’s so much better than what it is and likely ever will be. My PS3 will continue to collect dust until Sony provides an experience that doesn’t make me want to throw it through the window.
“Your invited as well feel free to go to the shops and buy a ps3 and use it, no one is stopping you.. Once you use it then you will understand why we love it so :)”
As I’ve already mentioned, I own one and cannot for the fucking life of me understand how anyone can blindly defend it as much as you Sony fanboys do. It’s painfully obvious to me you (personally you, not the general you) have never used a 360 and if you had, you’d understand why Live is worth $30-50/year and why it’s so much better in general than PSN will ever be.
But that’s fine. Continue to delude yourself. I’ll keep enjoying my “gay” avatar and you keep waiting in virtual lines to virtual bowl with your OMG LIFELIKE Home Person.
Just keep telling yourself “it’s so much better because it’s free…”

Yes, lets talk about the E74, and how it costs $100-150 to get replaced. Or, lets talk about the disk scratching, that ruins multiple $60 games, how about the RRoD. They may fix it for free, but it is still happening.
The rest of what you said is complete crap.

Really? So you mean to tell me the endless EULAs and installation of everything I download only happens to me? The epic annoyance that occurs whenever ANYTHING needs to be downloaded or updated only happens on MY PS3?
It's hilarious how you keep ignoring the points I bring up that are, in fact, valid and instead focus on things I said either in retaliation to something that had nothing to do with my original point/post (Never mentioned hardware failure anyway, that was you and your trolling cohorts...my post was entirely about how shitty PSN was is and continues to be).
You're so far out of touch with everything, I actually pity you. And the fact that I keep getting downvoted only further proves that you retards know I'm right and don't want to see it.
Free =/= great.
Not by a long shot.
Does the 360 have problems? Sure. Am I blind to them? Nope. I've lost 2 consoles to RRoD. Shit happens. It's technology. I'm not defending the 360 as being perfect. Far from it.
It's just a HELL of a lot better than the PS3/PSN will ever be.

"years"
"YEARS"
The Wii could be purchased in stores in the United States TWO FULL DAYS later than the PS3.
The thing you should have said is that the SIXAXIS announcement came less than eight months after the Wiimote announcement. This is true, but still does not equate to a full year, while you said:

Stop deluding yourself into thinking that a random rumor is going to be some how accurate. Yea if only the 2.70 rumor would come true PS3 would be amazing. Cross game chat everyone wants, and the other improvements listed on that patch are all perfect. I would rather have 2.70 anyday over PS Home.
Although I highly doubt this patch will do any of that stuff, and probably will be a disappointment on many levels (because of the 2.70 hype) we'll just have to see....

@PN04: I don't see why you're reacting so strongly to a simple wish... rumors are rumors, but they persist when it's something people want, fear, like, etc. So wishing for a rumor to be true, when it's something you like, is completely normal.
I've no idea where those cross-game / chat rumors came from, though.

Now what would be really cool would be the ability to access your game saves remotely from another PS3 when playing on another system like PSP remote play.
That way you could import your latest progress save and level from your home system and play with your leveled profiles on other systems. Here's hoping someone is listening.

I wish that Sony'd also pull off some/all the restrictions on gamesaves. I can understand maybe for rock band and all the licensing issues, but c'mon...RE5?
I have to start the game over again now that I've replaced my old 60 gb drive with a monster 500 gb drive (the 500 gb was having some minor issues, that's why I was testing it for the past two weeks with the 60 gb - this's for a replacement ps3 I received so I had to check for hardware issues, the timing was bad though b/c of re5's release). It would've been nice to copy the save to an external and then transfer it to the 500 gb, but noooo...not allowed.

yeah that Copy-Protection on savefiles is pretty crazy. Mercs2 was protected also, it's really lame considering you cant get trophies on a savefile from another PS3 anyway so what's the point of blocking a user from copying their gamesaves?

Locked save files? Complain to Capcom or anyone else that does this. Not all games lock the save files, and to be honest, NONE of them should do it because we have an easy-to-replace internal hard drive and the system backup feature ignores saves.

@kentuckyfried: You should’ve backed up your entire PS3 to an external drive and then restored it. That way, I think they stay intact. At least, I had no trouble with save files or downloaded content when I did that (not that I don’t dislike them being bound to an account/system either way).

Insomniac already indicated when they released the last patch that the PSN firmware update that was released just before that patched enabled the ability to log in two people to PSN from one console. They just needed to update to support it themselves.
So this patch may be unnecessary.
