PS3 firmware update may coincide with Resistance 2 patch [Update]

The thing is, if they could do those things (cross-game invites, party system, voice messages, etc) wouldn't they have already done them by now? They're some of the most important aspects of the Live interface and I doubt that Sony would be spinning its wheels with as many of these minor updates that add touch-ups to the photo gallery and whatnot if they could figure out how to get the other stuff working.

It's not a hardware thing, but from what I've heard more of a design issue.

Half the things that people demand sony copy from live are patented design features that are waiting like landmines in a playground. And frankly what is the big deal about "cross game invites" If I want to play the game someone else is playing I'll put it in my system and let him invite me, or I'll wait for him to invite me and then put it in the system either way I'm still playing with them. Just because Live does things a certain way doesnt mean they cant be done any other way.

There are "cross-game invites," and to illustrate the simplicity of it I'll give you this handy tutorial:

1. Press the "PS" button on your controller while in game
2. Scroll to the friends section
3. Select a user from your friend list, press circle and start a new message
4. Write something to the tune of "Hey, I'm playing Killzone 2 - get up on here sucka."
5. Wait for him to get on and join your game

If that is too difficult there always the simple approach: call them on your phone.

I wish Live had an option to turn off cross-game invites. It's annoying having a douche invite you to play his crappy custom map on Halo every time I boot up the xbox to play fallout.

you receive it as a Message same as any other.(dont delete it) go to that persons name on your friends list hit Triangle and choose accept invite. (obviously you gotta get into that game first), then choose that invite and choose Join.

As far as cross-game invites go, it would be something like this.

You're playing Uncharted. Your friend starts playing Killzone 2 and wants to invite you. He opens up his friends list and hits a button on your name. You get a message that says "Billy Bob wants to play KZ2". You click accept, it prompts you to put in your KZ2 disc, and then takes you straight into the room that your buddy is in without you having to do anything.

Guys, I'm pretty sure he's talking about in-game videos a la Noby Noby Boy except, instead of recording the video and then having it post to YouTube, it would save to the HDD. This would be an awesome feature to include in an XMB update (which, in effect, would make it compatible will all games as opposed to individual games having the feature). Would definitely make capturing gameplay vids much less frustrating and cumbersome.

It is fast in the fact that I, the consumer, am getting features for free. I'm not complaining that SONY slow.(Not that I disagree with MS's pricing structure)

Bought into the hype would apply way more for the PS3 which I bought on MGS4 release day due to the hype of how amazing the game was from early reviews…which was the most overhyped game of all time probably. Please, by all means enjoy your console and continue deluding yourself into thinking it’s so much better than what it is and likely ever will be. My PS3 will continue to collect dust until Sony provides an experience that doesn’t make me want to throw it through the window.

Yea if only the 2.70 rumor would come true PS3 would be amazing. Cross game chat everyone wants, and the other improvements listed on that patch are all perfect. I would rather have 2.70 anyday over PS Home.

Although I highly doubt this patch will do any of that stuff, and probably will be a disappointment on many levels (because of the 2.70 hype) we'll just have to see....

I wish that Sony'd also pull off some/all the restrictions on gamesaves. I can understand maybe for rock band and all the licensing issues, but c'mon...RE5?

I have to start the game over again now that I've replaced my old 60 gb drive with a monster 500 gb drive (the 500 gb was having some minor issues, that's why I was testing it for the past two weeks with the 60 gb - this's for a replacement ps3 I received so I had to check for hardware issues, the timing was bad though b/c of re5's release). It would've been nice to copy the save to an external and then transfer it to the 500 gb, but noooo...not allowed.

yeah that Copy-Protection on savefiles is pretty crazy. Mercs2 was protected also, it's really lame considering you cant get trophies on a savefile from another PS3 anyway so what's the point of blocking a user from copying their gamesaves?

Locked save files? Complain to Capcom or anyone else that does this. Not all games lock the save files, and to be honest, NONE of them should do it because we have an easy-to-replace internal hard drive and the system backup feature ignores saves.

@kentuckyfried: You should’ve backed up your entire PS3 to an external drive and then restored it. That way, I think they stay intact. At least, I had no trouble with save files or downloaded content when I did that (not that I don’t dislike them being bound to an account/system either way).

Resistance 2 does have split-screen
