When activision realised the sucess of COD2 they said to IW to do what ever they wanted, COD4. Such a huge success it has won numerous accolades, IW probably own Activision now.

You don't pay attention much, do you? Infinity Wards, the developer, owning Activision, a game producing giant, that just merged with Blizzard. Ok then.

I honestly think this is the best time for Activision to spin Call of Duty into two different segments. No matter how much we argue that it wont sell as much, Modern Warfare 2 will sell as much if not more than the original Call of Duty 4. All Activision has to do is tie Call of Duty to Modern Warfare. If they stick "Modern Warfare 2, the sequel to Call of Duty 4" on the box, people will know exactly what they are purchasing. They would be able to use the Call of Duty name without sticking it in the title. That way Activision has 2 very big cash cows for the future. Whether you liked it or not, COD:WAW made millions of dollars. The success of the brand is very much guaranteed for the foreseen future. Modern Warfare can now become the "next" COD for Activision, cementing it as a franchise that will be successful whether or not COD flops in the future.

You know, when I call my friends I say "wanna play call of duty? or wanna play COD 4? not wanna play Modern Warefare?" although they probably will know exactly what I mean.

But, Modern Warfare by itself just sounds generic :(

I won't be mad if Treyarch does MW3. IMO they did a bangup job on WaW.

I actually like this idea, as it will allow me to disassociate myself from every douche who says things like "oh yeah brah call of duty is so awesome..."
I love playing CoD4, but the rest of the series has failed to captivate me (not to say it's bad, just not my cup of tea) and the fanbase has been giving me an awkward halo-ish aftertaste.

IW should rightfully want to part with COD since inferior products have dilluted the name (although WaW is much better than 3 but still not IW standard). Treyacrch's games should be called COD: RHSCE (red headed step child edition)

-1 for being a douchebag concerning a great developer like Treyarch. I'd like to see you stand up and pull a sequel out of your ass in half a year to a year with an entirely new campaign and new features.

@Anticrawl

Even Infinity Ward hates Treyarch. When they were developing CoD4, the file name they used was CoD3, because as far as they're concerned, 3 didn't really happen. Plus all they did for WaW was take Modern Warfare and make it WW2. Not that hard of a project.

Treyarch is a fantastic developer. Don't be a douchebagel. They were given six months.. SIX MONTHS to finish an entire game. They wanted longer and begged for an extension and got 2 extra months of polishing time. The development cycle was 8 months total from end to end and no breaks. Infinity Ward got 3 and a half years.

so even if treyarch is a ”great" developer, you even admitted that waw was hurried, you're the fucking douche. i own every call of duty and imo 3 and waw are the bastard sons (like you) of the franchise

i havent got all of the COD's but iv played and completed them all.and as far as im concerned treyarch did a good job on W@W. atleast in the single player. online put me off at the start because of all the glitches.and now that thats fixed atleast once a week i get a "couldnt retrieve content pack index" message which stops me playing for atleast 24hours. which is frustrating. anyway.iv forgotten my point :S oh aye.leave treayarch alone.the new map content beats the shit out of the lame maps IW released anyways :)

Its an interesting move on Activision's part, i'll grant that. It could end up a situation similar to Guitar Hero and Rock Band, where you get Call of Duty as the more "popular" brand, like Guitar Hero, more accessible and more mass-market. Modern Warfare could be Rock Band, the elite brand, selling fewer but relying on premium content and such to make the money back. The two brands compete, but in this case, Activision is the sole winner. The brands compete, they win.

I'm still unsure about the numbering on the Grand Theft Auto series. Is the current GTA number four because it's the fourth one in 3D on vaguely next gen consoles, or is it recognising that GTA1 and GTA2 were on the PS1, GTA3 on the PS2 and is considering Vice City and San Andreas to essentially be GTA 3.1 and GTA 3.2. I guess I'll find out the answer to my question when GTA5 comes out.

I may be wrong, but I think it's the 4th GTA in liberty city, if you include GTA1 and exclude Liberty City Stories.
Or it could be as you said. Every time they use a number, they changed engines or something.

It has to do with the game engine. Notice GTA 3, Vice city and San Andreas use the same engine. GTA4 is a new engine and the next GTA will most likely have no number.

The numbers relate to them being new games in Liberty City.

All the GTA games that don't have numbers are either in a completely different city, or are side stories of GTA liberty city characters that already exist.

Separation of the brand is a good/bad thing. By taking the CoD off the name, they can establish it as its own brand. So they deviate a little bit away from the CoD formula just a bit to add/tweak whatever parts they want. I think I remember a while back that IW is working on a futuristic game. Call of Duty: Future Warfare would be the "real" sequel to the CoD franchise.

Think of it this way, there was Grand Theft Auto 3, but there were spin-offs, not "true" sequels in the Lib City, San Andreas, etc. I think this is what they're trying to do. In the case of the GTA games though, they retained the "GTA" moniker, which obviously helped sales. With word of mouth, and tons (every single gaming website, magazine, etc.) of coverage for Modern Warfare 2, I highly doubt people will care THAT much as to dismiss the game w/out the Call of Duty branding.
