This is why I personally think that it would be smart of nintendo to release a virtual handheld. It would be just the kind of item to get a lot of people to buy a DSi. Let's face it, nintendo fans tend to enjoy retro gaming, and nintendo should (and hopefully will) cash in on that.

That and I want to be able to play old gameboy pokemon games again now that the batteries have died in my old carts D:

Here' to hoping those rumors turn out to be true.

What would truly be amazing is if they offered the opportunity, via DS card, to -transfer- VC and Virtual Handheld (I guess teh acronym "VH", probably hasn't fallen into regular use yet, give it an hour), games between a Wii and DSi. I don't know if htat's technically feasable, but that would bring deffinitely me down off the fence and into "OMG I NEEDZ A DSI!1!!!1!" territory instantly.

if this is the column you wrote for last week, "Punch Out!!" wasn't worthy to replace it.

I think he just means that this article is a lot better than that one, and more interesting. At least, that's what I was thinking as I read this. I don't really care too much for Punch Out.

Not completely. We haven't heard anything from nintendo themselves, and I'm not going to get my hopes up until it's officially announced by them.

Some people say they heard about it at that DSi event, but Nintendo isn't commenting on it when asked. Doesn't sound very confirmed to me.

Especially since with all of the WiiWare/Virtual Console stuff at GDC the other day, that would have been the perfect time to announce/confirm a Virtual Handheld.

DSiWare is the main reason I want a DSi, that and my Phat is started to get old.

I don't think DSiWare will be a huge success because the DSi will be superseded before it gets to be the next big thing.

Unless the successor also supports DSiWare.

Good point. I hope the next handheld is backwards compatible with DS, because all they would have to do to stop people running Flash Carts through the DS slot is make "Slot 3" faster.

Everyone can keep claiming that the DSi isn't worth its camera or SD slot, but they keep refusing the idea of DSi specific games...

And then comes the back and forth of "It's not region-free!"-"Yes it is!"-"What? You mean it's not?!"-"I just said it is region-free! Read it for f***'s sake!"-"Oh, you mean it's not region-free..."-"AHHHHH!!!!!"...

... I just want my DSi games. :/

If Nintendo go the virtual handheld route I'll probably give up gaming. By that I mean less Civilisation Revolution DS more Pac-Man on my poor, poor phone. The idea of spending substantial amounts of money on something virtual is something I cannot get my head around.

And judging on what I've seen on Wiiware, I wouldn't get too excited for the DSIware service. Wiiware is a wasteland of fail, and it's rather 'puzzling' why people would automatically think the handheld version could be superior. In fact, due to the lower costs, man power, and expectations, it'll probably turn out a lot worse than any of us could have imagined.

Can you elaborate on how "WiiWare is a wasteland of fail"? (I hate what the internet has done to the word "fail" by the way)

There have been 60-70+ Wiiware games released, but only one decent title: Star Soldier R. Space Invaders Get Even if we're really pushing it. The ratio of quality software to mediocrity is simply unacceptable.

So does Lost Winds. And other games you don't tend to like but everyone else does.

And it doesn't matter about the ratio. If it really mattered about ratio, people would've dropped the PS2. And now, people would've dropped the Wii.
Goodness knows people did, and we're glad they did, because finally they stopped bitching.

Two decent games do not make a worthwhile service, Soshi. Maybe I used the wrong word in 'ratio', but two games compared to the library, both games based on decades old franchises, which frankly flies in the face of all those who chant the dum-drum of 'new games, new ips? I had to deny some drunk access to the club yesterday, and his argument was so compelling that I'll regurgitate for you guys here: come on, man, come on.

Lost Winds was garbage, and the Mega Man demo over in Live-Land 'Smelt Like Bad Nostalgia.'

"The idea of spending substantial amounts of money on something virtual is something I cannot get my head around. "

Then you'd better stop buying video games, movies, and music. And not just digitally.

Opinions are fun, huh Bowser? I really think WiiWare's caught on in a surprising way. Still not a year old yet, but quite a bit of worthwhile stuff, and more in the pipeline. Stuff to appease many tastes

The problem is, those are your opinions... they aren't so much facts as they are opinions.

I, for one, love my WiiWare. I'm a fan of the 4 SBCG4AP games, I do like Lost Winds, World of Goo's a classic to many, I'm one of the few that put up with and liked FFCC:MLaaK, I'd rather turn on Family Table Tennis instead of putting in Wii Sports for Tennis, Dr. Mario Online RX never gets tiring for me, the ArtStyle games are lovely, Trip Beat's fun for some of us, Megaman 9 is a fave for some of us, and... well... actually, that's all I could afford right now.
... needless to say, I would buy more if I had the money for it - and it's obvious my tastes are a bit more open than others.

In that sense, WiiWare is doing great in serving its customers well: Because people ARE buying their stuff, whether considered good or bad.

"people ARE buying their stuff"

I wouldn't be too sure about that. There's a reason why Telltale Games, for example, have exited the Wiiware arena in favour for the Xbox Live Marketplace. If you're not on the most popular games list, or you do not have considerable online hype for your Wiiware game, then sales are "supposedly" at a level beyond poor. I know that's definitely the case for the Virtual Console, and I don't see why the same rule wouldn't apply to Wiiware.
