Although EA promised the world would be in the middle of a cartoon-shaded war by now, it looks like Battlefield Heroes isn't going to hit the planned Q1 '09 release. If you're one of the unfortunate many who haven't been invited into the party, EA has a quick game that may hold you over.
The official Battlefield Heroes website has released a Flash version of the game to help pass the time before the open beta begins. In the Battlefield Heroes Flash Game players have 60 seconds to shoot as many "Nationals" as they can, who each pop into frame Wack-A-Mole style and await a bullet sandwich. It isn't as sexy as playing the real game, but ... yeah, we got nothing.

It really is the worst Battlefield game I've ever played. And yes that includes the console versions.

i got into the beta too but it locked up my PC everytime i tried to play it (prompting an uninstall). i mean my PC is older (2.4Ghz P4, 2GB RAM) but i thought it should be able to handle that game. but from what i'm hearing, i'm not missing much anyway.

YEAH! Fuck giving the game for free and charging for extras. Everything should be free. What do developers think this is? Some sort of business model that's been making the rounds in asia for the past 10 years? Geez!

I'm not demanding it for free, I'll gladly pay full price for a complete game.
I just think it's totally annoying that some players in a game posses more stuff than others because they were willing to pay more or were ABLE to pay more.
Plus, mindless boring grind mmos and tentacle porn are also pretty successful in asia, tehrefore it has to be good too! right?

your logic is about as broken as a red ringed 360. You must remove all sexual organs to insure you don't create another generation of people like you.

If you'd gladly pay full price for a full game, do I have news for you...
Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2042 are both readily available for purchase. If console is your thing, Battlefield: Bad Company is also easy to acquire on the cheap. Those are full games ready and willing for your money.
Battlefield Heroes, meanwhile, is NOT like those other games. Because it's not based on those other games business models. What this means is simple. If it looks like a duck, talks like a duck, tastes like a duck, but you demand it become a tiger, you're a retard. Meanwhile the people who have been paying attention to how Battlefield Heroes will do and hope to see a business model like this succeed just so that PC gaming outside of WOW doesn't completely die.

So none of you think that microtransactions are a bad idea?
Prepare for gaming to become the absolute worst form of nickel and diming ever if that's the case. Sure, in this game the microtransactions don't actually affect the gameplay. But what's stopping that from becoming the case - morality of the developers? You only have to look at the people who make shovelware for the Wii, PC, PS2 and DS to realise that such a concept is mostly absent. Businesses are out to make money and if they can do it in a more cumulative and extreme fashion then they'll gladly do so.

Unless they changed things (I haven't logged in in a week so maybe...) weapons and some clothes are unlocked through VP, which are got by skill.
Abilities are unlocked by gaining levels. You can buy an item to double your XP rate but you cannot buy XP.
Many cosmetic items are paid for by cash. Game-play wise, money makes no difference.
I haven't logged in since the wipe, but I presume they didn't change weapon purchases.

yeh i'm in the beta of this and can honestly say you're not missing out on anything, the aiming/mouse movement is kinda limited for a third person shooter, you cant move the crosshair down all the way or up all the way... it just feels weird.
also you walk VERY slow in it, and there is no Run button, which is just the worst idea ever, it takes you ages to get from one side of the map to the other... and they are small maps!
i've played it once, and haven't gone back to it at all yet

You're still not missing anything. They're recently scrapped all the test players so you've got to start levelling up again, and to add insult to injury all customisations beyond the start is all done through microtransactions. It wouldn't be so bad if the items were permanent, but they're all rentals. A rough estimate on maintaining a fully kitted out character with the half-decent weapons would be somewhere around $20/month. At that price it's cheaper to fund a World of Warcraft addiction!

well that's retarded. i have no problem if they want to charge for customization items like clothes or paint jobs on cars or something but when they start charging for things that should be unlocked by skill, that's when we have a problem. if you're gonna charge for weapons, you might as well charge for the game.

When I played Battlefield Heroes, there were two types of points. One of them you earned by doing things (i.e. defeating enemies, capturing control points) and the other type you purchased with money. However, I don't remember needing the latter type to purchase weapons. In that sense, Canard is completely wrong as the only things they only (currently plan) to charge for vanity items like jungle camo, clothes, taunts etc.. I think you were correct when you said they were rentals though. I don't remember too well but I think they are permanent if you pay a higher price.
As stated in their FAQ, they don't plan on charging players for things that will give them a gameplay advantage.
The game isn't too fun, though. Won't play it again.

@ finnith: Yes I know you buy the weapons with your skill points, but with the rate of getting the skill points being so low and the cost of the better weapons being so high and time limited, to level the playing field you're as good as forced into buying the time limited skill point multipliers.

I got tired of waiting and am no longer even interested in Battlefield Heroes. They dropped the ball on this one.

I don't think the beta is terrible, the art design is great, the level design was pretty solid. Buccaneer Bay wasn't up to par though. The character animations were awfully stiff though. They did some interesting things with the class system I can appreciate. But there definitely is something just "off" about the core gameplay mechanic, it feels sluggish and it does get boring eventually. I don't know if any more polishing can fix that issue, we'll see.

It's really not that bad of a beta. It's just lacking maps and longer game time.
The game is going to be free and yet people are complaining about the small micro-transactions. It's a BETA, if you play it go and submit your feedback. Like me.

I'm sorry but like Shadow God has said, there are things to remember:
-It's meant to be free
-It's meant to be easy to run
-It's meant to be open in accessibility gameplay wise.
That being said, I personally found it fun. Want something easy and light hearted to drop into? BFH is a good choice... There are many, MANY worse free online games out there but Quake Live and BFH seem to be the few actually worth playing.

The beta shows up the game to be supremely average with little replay value - not just because of the lack of maps (hey, it's a beta), but because the gameplay is unrefined and without depth. And don't get me started on the microtransactions... I don't have a problem with them per se, but the way they are charging people to rent articles of clothing and for those prices? It's nothing short of crazy. I understand they have to make money from the game in some manner, but this isn't the right way to go about it. If they keep this up, I honestly don't have high hopes of the game sticking around for more than a year after release.
