We thought we'd pass along a courteous reminder from Activision informing the gaming community that Guitar Hero: Metallica began rocking store shelves today. If you haven't found current full-band simulators to be punishing enough, Metallica promises to deliver with an "Expert +" mode, double kick pedals, and guitar solos capable of turning even the sturdiest fingers into tiny puddles of red goo. If you've got $59.99 lying around (or $49.99 for the Wii version, $39.99 for the PS2), you can simulate "riding the lightning"* with unparalleled accuracy.
*Warning: Riding lightning can lead to unintended health consequences in the groin region, including serious unsightly burns and impotence. Consult your doctor before deciding to mount any arcs of electricity.
Update: The PS2 version isn't actually dropping until Sunday, May 24 -- meaning Activision is effectively tainting two of 2009's Sabbath days with a touch of unholy metal.

I'm telling you like this.
I like Metallica from time to time. But Metallica does not have the musical diversity to fit a party type of setting from the group I usually play Rock Band with. Rock Band, meanwhile, because it does stack, has a huge tracklist on my copy with a wide variety of tracks. If I was going the Guitar Hero route on these kinds of games, we would constantly be switching between discs to get at a song someone likes. Trust me, I know this. Because this was a major problem in our Beatmania and Guitar Hero PS2 play sessions.
If Guitar Hero would allow players to create a master track list, then yeah. More focused releases like this would be an excellent addition. But as a stand alone, narrowing the focus of the musical diversity, we would constantly have to stop playing one version or another and have to reregister all the controllers, etc. For my money, I don't see any reason, aside from greed, that these releases don't mesh together. I understand why Activision is doing what they are doing. I'm not stupid. I just don't see a reason to support those efforts if I don't have to.
Also, yes.. I will be buying Beatles.
1. It's the beatles.
2. There music has a huge amount of diversity which most other bands can't even attempt, let alone match.
3. It's the beatles.

So you are telling me if you don't want to swap disc.
you are not getting Rock band Beatles then huh. Because there is a big chance that it wont be Transfer-able like AC/DC was.
I mean that would kill the originality it has as a 250$ games (25% + more then the RB2 bundles)

According to the IGN review the Guitar Hero kick pedal WILL NOT work with Rock Band drumsets. Using a spliter cable with an extra Rock Band kick pedal will not work either. You can learn to make your own triggering controller to use two pedals at this link: http://imakeprojects.com/Projects/rock-band-dual-bass-drums-controller/. Or you can buy a ready made dual pedal switchbox here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001JK5Q0Y?ie=UTF8&tag=bastaroids-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001JK5Q0Y

Probably the first game that lives up to the "Guitar" in Guitar Hero, but I find myself refusing to get it because of how sell-out Metallica has been over the last ten years.

They sold out the moment they put their names on a record contract. Hell, even indie music is loaded with a bunch of sellouts. If they have a product you can buy, with money and/or sex, they have sold out.

Metallica may have sold out, like most great bands do in some way, but at least they didn't go this far.

What does "selling out" even mean anymore? It seems like every allegedly indie band is being promo'd by some store in the mall.
Determining a sell out is a tricky business. I generally take it as an artist substantially altering their art or message solely for commercial acceptance and success. Did Metallica need to change over the years to continue selling albums and concert tickets? They could have just kept rehashing the "Metallica sound" for several more albums through the late 80s and into the 90s and sold a tremendous amount of albums. However, the qualities and characteristics that made these guys entertaining in the first place are the same ones that drive them to find new ways to express themselves. And by the way, has anyone here been to a boring Metallica show? These guys have always given more than your money's worth for a show.
It is hard for me to take shots at a band like Metallica that has been generally active for around 25 years now. It is only natural that they and their music has changed over that time span. I don't think it is rational to expect any band to both:
1) not develop or evolve
and
2) stay creatively interesting
I can't really think of any bands that have anything approaching Metallica's longevity that haven't either made dramatic changes over the years (U2, Radiohead) or basically became a cover band of their own work (Rolling Stones, The Who, AC/DC and many more).
You don't have to be "all in" with everything a band does, but I don't think you should turn your back forever on a group you obviously enjoyed at one point because you didn't like an album or two along the way. A compilation like this is a great opportunity to revisit some great memories in a wholly unique way and maybe even share them with some friends. You might even end up liking some of the newer stuff if you give it a chance.

I will buy it with the guitar bundle if they come out with one. I need one of the new WT guitars and don't feel like paying 70 bucks for one, then 60 for this game.

The game is nice to you, until you get to the 80's metallica set list, and then it just shits all over you.

* Creeping Death
* Disposable Heroes
* Dyers Eve
* Enter Sandman
* Fade To Black
* Fight Fire With Fire
* For Whom The Bell Tolls
* Hit The Lights
* King Nothing
* Master of Puppets
* Mercyful Fate (Medley) ( I loved this on the 2 disc garage release)
* One
* Orion
* Sad But True
* Seek And Destroy
* The Shortest Straw
* The Thing That Should Not Be
* The Unforgiven
* Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
* Wherever I May Roam
* Whiplash
These are all decent to CLASSIC. and i'm not even looking at the accompanying artists...

I'm glad this game is getting some good reviews, but imo, it still looks ugly. If the next Guitar Hero game gets into the 9s, I'll consider buying it.
But until then, I'll continue playing the Rock Band. Oh Harmonix, you've spoiled me too much!

If this game supported all GH:WT DLC, then I'd buy it in a heartbeat, because they have some good stuff coming out and coming soon. But it doesn't, so I'll rent it for The Unforgiven and leave it at that.

Got Guitar Hero Metallica first thing this morning.
16 songs later on the drums...
amazing game!
This is the perfect kind of music for such game!
Love it!
The graphics and audio are actually better then Guitar Hero World Tour.
The second kickpedal works on the Wii.
Tonight I'll try the vocals and guitar!

This game is probably the best one yet in my opinion. Difficulty is pretty good for the expert vets, especially for the hardcore drum players. Shame they took out online career though.

Mine keeps saying my "4 pad drum set is disconnected" half way through songs!!
But it recognizes the set is still there, even at the f@cking error screen. BTW I'm using the PS3 version with a RB set (with double peddles and a cymbal pack of course!) now I'm off to flame Activision...

I'll mostly be playing this game alone, so I wonder: Can you play using vocals only like RB2, or do you have to have 2 members present for the tour mode like RB1 (me playing vocals & guitar?). I'm really tired of pushing buttons, I mean playing guitar, I mean pushing buttons.

Mine keeps loosing the connection to the drums (RB drums, w/ double kick and cymbal pack) randomly in the middle of songs... I tried to complain on the GH forums but it just kept making me register over and over again... this sucks.
Posted: Mar 30th 2009 11:33AM ummhello said
do you have the cymbal add-ons? those are incompatible with GH:Metallica and the double bass pedal won't work on the RockBand2 drumset (at least that's the way it is for the PS3 version). it'll keep on saying "connection to port 1 lost" or "connection to port 2 lost" disconnect the cymbals.
you CAN have the pedal hooked up (but you NEED to use the splitter--the plug-in opening below the first bass pedal plug is NOT for the 2nd drum pedal)--but it won't register hits on the 2nd drum pedal--at least, that's as far as we could tell when we played last night on my friend's PS3.
