Dead Rising 2 multiplayer not confirmed, Capcom says
Just like every other year, GDC in 2009 brought with it a bevy of new information (and the ubiquitous Pat Benatar rumor). And unfortunately, during the rush to post information, it's easy for publishing outlets (including ourselves) to mishear something, misconstrue a piece of information and/or not have time to follow up with the information source. So when Jeff Haynes of IGN heard Laura Scholl of middleware developer mental mill on a Dead Rising 2 panel speaking about "6000 characters onscreen during multiplayer sessions," he reported on the piece of information just as he heard it.
Unfortunately for Mr. Haynes though, Laura Scholl apparently misspoke. We contacted mental mill this morning for comment on the quote -- a quote that would ostensibly confirm an unnannounced mode for Dead Rising 2, mind you -- and Loretta Stevens told us that she was present at the panel when Ms. Scholl misspoke, saying, "She meant multiplatform." And so we went one step further and contacted Chris Kramer at Capcom to find out what he had to say about all of this: "Here's how it is: I believe what one person says about this project, Inafune-san. I don't know anything about this middleware provider."
When we asked him straight up if the game will have multiplayer or not, he had this to say, "We have not announced much about the game at this point," remaining clandestine on the subject altogether. So while Dead Rising 2 may contain some form of multiplayer, as of right now, it's officially not confirmed.
UPDATE: Laura Scholl has contacted us with further clarification of her statement, writing, "In my 'Making of Dead Rising 2' presentation at GDC this past Friday, while I was describing how Blue Castle is using mental mill technology in character development, I mistakenly referred to the game as multiplayer instead of multiplatform. I apologize for the confusion. The game is indeed multiplatform, and Blue Castle has done an amazing job creating incredibly photorealistic characters – from their skin tone to their clothing – in heavily populated and complex levels throughout the game. Gamers are going to be thrilled with how the game feels, looks and plays."

DaveMcRae @ Mar 30th 2009 5:33PM
sexy maids, schoolgirls? dammit, capcom knows my weakness! noooooooo there goes my money!
McWilly @ Mar 30th 2009 5:04PM
Women eh.
Dirty @ Mar 30th 2009 5:07PM
Chicks man.
samfish @ Mar 30th 2009 5:06PM
I like the thought of co-op multiplayer in Dead Rising, but I'm scared now.
...after what Capcom did with RE5 and it's co-op malarky, well...I just hope they don't make it a forced co-op game. I'm hoping when it is (inevitably) confirmed that it's sort of a free for all mission mode where you can go online and pair up with someone.
AwesomeTown @ Mar 30th 2009 6:03PM
I just hope they don't say that the horrible controls are "part of the experience" and keep them the same.
Oh and I think co-op is a must with the next one.
tboy123 @ Mar 30th 2009 5:10PM
A la RE5, we will see it as an add-on for $5, or $2 in JAP. A "few weeks" after release
Pricing for the rest of Capcoms multiplayer games will go as follows:
$1.99 -- 2player
$2.99 -- 3player
$3.99 -- 4player
$4.99 -- 5player
$7.99 -- (value pack) 16player!
$0.99 -- offline Co-op
$1.99 -- offline other multiplayer mods
+++EXPANSIONS $4.99 minimum
Stay tuned for $0.99/ea single player campaign levels!
adolson @ Mar 30th 2009 6:02PM
All that, plus 4GB data installs! Awesome!
joeybeast @ Mar 30th 2009 6:54PM
I'd pay for the co-op.
iag25 @ Mar 30th 2009 7:55PM
You must secretly work for Capcom because that's a great way to rip off their loyal customers. Good show !
Also Megaman suit ? ..add 0.50 to that ..and oh yeah ..that's EUROS
tboy123 @ Mar 30th 2009 9:05PM
Installs suck, and better studios (usually first party) don't have them, or just small essential data installs. But, they don't bug me so much anymore. I rent the games with larger installs, then delete them. But clearing up room on my 20GB HDD is... not fun to say the least...
I rented RE5. It is mediocre at its best parts.
@ joeybeast
But in order to play coop you also have to pay for the $1.99 2player expansion, or else it is coop by yourself!
And to play the other modes offline you need to pay for the corresponding add-on packs. If you want to play with 4players offline, you must first purchase the 4player add-on pack.
Wes @ Mar 31st 2009 8:08AM
@tboy123,
Your forgetting about the high definition picture and audio add-on. Its in standard definition till you fork over another $19.99 to unlock the high definition textures and audio already on the dvd you bought, but, was unaccessible due to DRM!
golobulus @ Mar 30th 2009 5:12PM
lol of course not; that's what dlc is for.
David @ Mar 30th 2009 5:16PM
Buying this game depends on if there will be offline multiplayer or not.
golobulus @ Mar 30th 2009 5:31PM
where have you been this entire gen? APPARENTLY it's the standard now... mp AND co-op.
SoshiKitai @ Mar 30th 2009 5:47PM
Standard doesn't make it a permanent rule for every game...
See "The Conduit" for the Wii.
....... :/
David @ Mar 30th 2009 6:39PM
Well, Call of Duty 5 had it, but I dont own it anymore. I currently have Killzone 2, GTA IV, Battlefield: Bad Company and LittleBigPlanet. None of them have coop nor offline multiplayer except LittleBigPlanet.
Night Elve @ Mar 30th 2009 6:53PM
Really?
I hate how now every game released need to have some kind of multiplayer. The first one does not have this feature and it's a fine game.
Hell! games like Uncharted does not have this feature too and they don't need it.
David @ Mar 30th 2009 8:06PM
That is true Night Elve, but this game seems like a game where you need companionship, since theres supposed to be alooots of zombies around you. And I could need another multiplayer game.
dgknight500 @ Mar 30th 2009 5:16PM
*shakes head in disappointment* Capcom, what happened to you... You used to be cool.
jackal @ Mar 30th 2009 5:40PM
Hey, Capcom still cool. You pay later, LATER!
Sorry...had to throw in the obligatory Simpsons reference.
MystileArmor @ Mar 30th 2009 5:26PM
Would be kinda cool though if they threw in a "deathmatch"-like mode where you fight each other, while having the zombies as an added factor to take into account.
Mr French @ Mar 30th 2009 5:28PM
but awesomeness is confirmed right?
AwesomeTown @ Mar 30th 2009 6:24PM
Confirmed!
John Perkins @ Mar 30th 2009 5:34PM
Please Capcom, don't ruin another fantastic single player game by shoehorning multiplayer into it just to add another bullet point. Not every game needs multiplayer.
Reaper075 @ Mar 30th 2009 10:41PM
I think it would pretty cool if Capcom had some kind of Horde mode if it is multi player if not then nevermind
DaveMcRae @ Mar 30th 2009 5:38PM
6000 Zombies. Lawnmowers. Multiplayer.
Sounds like it would have been lots of fun.
Cj @ Mar 30th 2009 5:40PM
When they reply like that, you know there will be. Maybe they just told her to say she was mistaken so they can announce it later. Im pretty sure there is a multiplayer component.
tmacairjordan87 @ Mar 30th 2009 5:40PM
As long as it's not forced like RE5. I'm still pissed at how bad they ruined resident evil with tacked on multiplayer to a single player experience.
I don't mind having co-op in Dead Rising to mess around, but some of us don't need to constantly be playing with people to get anything done. Next thing you know there will be co-op in freakin fallout 4 >.
bubugalu @ Mar 30th 2009 6:51PM
agreed! you can easily tell. i mean just look at the AI for your partner.... its a joke... the only co-op thing about it is, "here pull this, and ill pull that" type of gameplay.... my point is you wouldnt design a AI that most often shot at you as it would shoot the enimey, and when your online co-op, the enimy could just take more damage... its deffinently tacked-on...
Anticrawl @ Mar 30th 2009 5:48PM
So long as my sledge hammer does fall apart after crushing 4-5 zombie heads I may buy this. Between the outrageous weapon depredation and the old black guy who desperately wanted to be a part of your life I lost interest in the game very very fast regardless of how fun it should have been by default.
Anticrawl @ Mar 30th 2009 5:48PM
So long as my sledge hammer doesn't*
samfish @ Mar 30th 2009 11:13PM
'eh? Sledge hammer was probably the longest lasting melee weapon in the game.
bvhj @ Mar 30th 2009 5:51PM
Oh, sure... I confuse multiplayer and multiplatform all the time!
CH3BURASHKA @ Mar 30th 2009 5:57PM
This is ridiculous. It has become obvious that there WILL be multiplayer (assuming Mrs. Scholl isn't completely wrong). This is akin to showing your hand while playing poker and still trying to pull the poker face. Just admit it, fold and try again.
player66 @ Mar 30th 2009 6:18PM
Doesn't matter. I'm going to buy this one, multiplayer or not. I played DR to death. It was my first love on the 360. I can't wait to play this one.
The Alex @ Mar 30th 2009 6:28PM
I think any "deathmatch" style multiplayer modes would feel tacked on. A co-op mode on the other hand could be very good.
Also, if it's anything like the first Dead Rising, meaning hard as hell, then some co-op would be very welcome!
carg0 @ Mar 30th 2009 6:33PM
multiplayer?
every resource should be spent on ensuring the quality of the campaign and Capcom has already shot themselves in the foot by outsourcing this sequel to a highly unqualified studio.
multiplayer should be the least of anyone's concerns. let's try to keep a sense of perspective here, kids.
bubugalu @ Mar 30th 2009 6:42PM
hey it looks like its another pay for online deal again, if capcom is smart they will not charge for online... i mean they got enough flack from RE5, lets hope they get it, but theyll probably announce that they are planing for dlc a few weeks later for online... then when we pay for it, itll just be a 128kb unlock key... Capcom, youve changed...
Alex @ Mar 30th 2009 6:54PM
I'll pay 100 MS points if all the zombie girls are in bikinis. The policewoman from Dead Rising 1 had a nice rack, maybe they can bring her back in a bikini for 100 points. I'll also pay some MS points if I don't have to use a friggin camera this time too.
MaxShrek @ Mar 30th 2009 7:12PM
Multiplayer isn't confirmed, but Dead Rising 2 is confirmed.. I see that as a no-lose scenario.
Emperor_Den_Den @ Mar 31st 2009 12:03PM
I'm probably off topic but when I looked @ the picc two words came 2 mind "HELLO MOTO"
