GDC09: Wolfenstein hands-on

The drawbacks we noted in our Comic Con preview are still present in the current build, especially the poor enemy AI. There were times when enemies were clearly looking at us and tracking our movements, yet weren't firing their guns. It was almost as if they were saying, "Just go ahead and shoot us. We're Nazis. We deserve it."

It was hard to not think: Hellboy. |
Our demo was focused on the game's aforementioned Veil functionality,. Once your character finds the mysterious Veil amulet in the game, he starts learning how to develop Veil powers; the first being "Mire," which is basically bullet time. Turn it on by hitting right on the d-pad, and everything slows down. It'll chew through your Veil meter pretty quickly, but obviously gives you the upper hand in combat situations.

Why didn't the Nazis make their entire uniforms out of the indestructible hat material? |
The amulet has four slots on it, and it twists and rotates like the puzzle box in Hellraiser, but we didn't get access to any other powers during our demo. We did encounter a large boss called the Heavy Trooper, however, and he blasts at you with an enormous Ghostbusters-like particle cannon. Once you've defeated him (Veil Vision will paint his vulnerable spots red), you can take his cannon and use it as your own. One interesting note: the particle cannon will totally obliterate enemies ... except for their hats and guns. Food for thought: Why didn't the Nazis make their entire uniforms out of the indestructible hat material?

Besides basic enemies, we encountered the Trooper, a Scribe (who creates shields around fellow soldiers using the Veil), and a boss known as the Despoiled. He's a glowing green skeletal Nazi officer ... who doesn't like you much. He can take you down with just a couple of hits, but once you learn the secret to offing him, he's a piece of cake. [Spoiler alert: Pop a Geist near him, and he drops like a sack of potatoes.]
"Veil will be in multiplayer," Raven assures. |
As we previously noted, Wolfenstein's look and gameplay is dated -- and not in a retro chic way. Wiithout the Veil, the game could be mistaken for a last-gen title, so the game's success rests on how compelling this feature will be throughout an entire playthrough. We didn't get to check out multiplayer, but developer Raven did assure us that "Veil will be in multiplayer."

id software producing a first-person shooter? What will they think of next?!
Sir Buzz Killington( The Artist formerly known as Jakka) @ Mar 30th 2009 2:43PM
Still, not as insane as IW announcing Modern Warfare 2.
McWilly @ Mar 30th 2009 3:09PM
Yeah because no-one saw that coming.
Zeus.:God @ Mar 30th 2009 3:29PM
Raven Software is making it. Not id- it's just their franchise.
Duke @ Mar 30th 2009 3:38PM
Dark, I thought it was funny. Just so you don't think it went over everyone's head.
Kevin Kelly @ Mar 30th 2009 3:44PM
It is Raven developing it, but they're using the idTech 4 engine. They also threw the word "id" around a lot during our preview, as in "Wolfenstein is id's heavy hitter, so we... " etc etc etc.
dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Mar 30th 2009 5:08PM
@Zeus: I know, but I still think it's fair to say id is at least assisting in production, given that it's their baby and all.
And thank you, Duke :P
Mr Khan @ Mar 30th 2009 2:46PM
Very lackluster for iD. They haven't made the best of the best in terms of gameplay lately, but those graphics are kinda sad for iD Software.
Zeus.:God @ Mar 30th 2009 3:31PM
Raven Software is making the game- and they're using the Doom 3 engine (id Tech 4), so it's to be expected that it's not up to par- however, I still think they look great for such an old engine.
Owen @ Mar 30th 2009 2:48PM
yes it is, to be fair modern warfare 2 was very pridictable beacuse the first one was one of the best games ever
adolson @ Mar 30th 2009 2:50PM
I won't say no to a demo of this game.
Maulok @ Mar 30th 2009 2:51PM
I'm not sure I get this title. Nobody was really breathlessly anticipating the latest entry in the Wolfenstein saga. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was kind of fun back in its day, but couldn't the resources be better spent on a new IP?
zsb2003 @ Mar 30th 2009 3:49PM
To say no one is anticipating this game is just wrong. Go to Wolfenstein.com to check for yourself. There are plenty of people who can't wait to play this game, myself included.
pogfreak @ Mar 30th 2009 3:50PM
The pub probably wouldn't fund a B list studio like Raven to do a new IP.
Popfrogs @ Mar 30th 2009 2:53PM
That's the crazy thing about state-of-the-art game engines. They don't look so state-of-the-art 5 years later. In video game years this is a last-gen title if it's using the Doom 3 engine.
Also keep in mind this is just iD as a publisher, it's Raven Software that's actually doing the work. They did a decent job rescuing Quake 4 though.
pinzasso @ Mar 30th 2009 3:05PM
Being as that there are plenty of popular games that are using engines that could be considered last gen i don't see how its a big problem (examples orange box, left4dead,quake4, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, etc). Gameplay first, graphics second (not that i am saying that the gameplay will be any good).
derdaim @ Mar 30th 2009 3:07PM
Actually Raven Software is working on Wolfenstein. id just does a little coproducing.
Anyway - this preview really disappoints me. I'am a fan of Raven's previous titles, especially jedi knight 2 & 3. I even liked Quake 4 a lot. It was a great old-school Quake 2-like experience and very well balanced (in SP). But this preview did not convinced me that the new Wolfenstein will be on par with Raven's back catalogue.
Maybe they should give up. They are in the business for like 20 years and maybe they're getting a bit tired. You have to leave when it's best!
Omega Jimes @ Mar 30th 2009 3:07PM
Everytime I watch that trailer, and the claw thing comes out of the ground with that coloured circle in the middle(0:59 into the movie), I can't help but think we're in for a Cthulhu-esque game of Simon, with Nazi's.
Nate Addison @ Mar 30th 2009 3:17PM
Im soooo sick of Nazi's and WWII that I would need to hear "Macarena" at least 1000 more times to reach the epic level of overplayed-ness that this game offers.
Deeznuts420 @ Mar 30th 2009 4:09PM
ayyyyyyy macarena aight!

writeln();
cont -= 1;
}
There ya go.
rov947 @ Mar 30th 2009 3:21PM
I didn't actually think the game looked all that bad.
Yipcanjo @ Mar 30th 2009 4:10PM
It may sell well, but it sure doesn't sound like that much fun...
greengiant @ Mar 30th 2009 4:38PM
Raven did a great job with Quake 4 I think a lot of people overlooked how good it was.
The multiplayer was just as good as quake 3.
Raven is a great company, I am a bit partial though w/ them being in my back yard here in WI. They got some great titles granted a lot of their work has been w/ sequels. However they have a new IP that is their OWN coming out later this year and that is Singularity, I think someone stole my idea for a game btw, musta opened my big mouth @ a lan party o.o...
Creebo @ Mar 30th 2009 5:04PM
This doesn't look very last gen to me. Yeah it's an outdated engine and yes it is going to be repetitive gameplay, but isn't this what iD stands for? Look at Doom 3, run and gun, not a great story, but it was still fun as hell to play. Yes I am a fanboy and yes I will be playing this. If only all of you would have not jumped on the bandwagon and played some PC games back in the day.
The Dark Wayne @ Mar 30th 2009 5:04PM
Even if it sucks I think i'll still get it. Ever since the first Hellboy movie i've really dug that Nazi occultist stuff. The only other game that really had that was Bloodrayne, and well, it just wasn't worth it
Kevin @ Mar 30th 2009 7:12PM
Ur... so, back when there was Wolfenstein and Doom, one was Nazis, the other Demons. Now we're playing against Nazi Demons.... Wolfendoom?
derdaim @ Mar 30th 2009 11:36PM
there were zombie-nazis in the original wolfenstein (somewhere in the later levels). And one endboss was Cyborghitler! So the new stuff fit's to the Wolfenstein-IP...
Kevin @ Mar 30th 2009 11:38PM
Na, that was the censored version. They made the blood green and called the Nazis zombies so that parents would stop complaining so much.
derdaim @ Mar 31st 2009 4:40AM
There were also Zombie-Nazis in the unzensored Version. For example in episode 2 (operation eisenfaust)
the guys who shoot you with their third arm out of their stomach...

Oh yea! Man, it's been a looooooong time.
EDW @ Mar 31st 2009 8:36PM
wow joystiq is being harsh on this game. i mean it doesn't look great but at least it looks entertaining. i really don't understand why they had to use the doom 3 engine though, it's so dated.
Albert Wesker @ Mar 31st 2009 11:10AM
It looks like a mix of Cod:Waw , Bio Shock , Silent Hill and Fall out 3
mredwebb @ Mar 31st 2009 2:47AM
Kevin, can you drop me an email? It's a faceplate thing.
