Rumors of me wanting a PS3: True

Rumors of me finally picking up a PS3 after hearing this news: False

I have a 360, a PC, a buddy with a PS3 & Wii, and a job with a company in trouble. $300-$350, maybe. I won't buy a used system because I got burned that way twice (used Saturn and my first PS2).

I want the PS3 for a few exclusives, a blu-ray player and because its so damn sexy. But man I am hurting right now and my favorite hobby is taking the brunt of the sacrifices.

This is supposed to be an enthusiast press site. They post shit like this purely to get hits. Hits == $. This pure speculation, which has no information whatsoever, is just a waste of my time.

Seems like a bit of a joke to me - their "most aggressive marketing campaign to date" seems to consist of no adverts on TV or in magazines in the UK.

I still think PS3 is best value in terms of quality and what you get - those 360's are just so shoddy (no offence to anyone - the 360s still have some awesome games).

Sony obviously knows they can't get in a price war with the 360. The ps3 costs more to produce than the 360 so microsoft can theoretically continue to cut the price lower than the ps3 since it has lower production costs.

The people at sony aren't stupid, they've probably done their homework and their research suggests that lowering the price of the ps3 won't increase sales enough to make as much if they left the price where it is now. If sony cuts the price and microsoft follows, do you think the ps3 will overtake the 360 in sales? probably not because the fact is the 360 will ALWAYS have the lower price point, unless sony figures out a way to cut costs on the production of the ps3.

I think what sony is trying to do instead of lowering their price, which would be a losing effort, is differentiate their product. but of of course their advertising has been lack luster. why not point out that for a higher price you are getting higher quality? use the higher price to your advantage and have it signify quality (which it obviously does, RROD and all, plus free online service). its a tough thing to do in this economy and i feel like if sony knew a way to make more money, they would. a company just doesnt pass up on profitable opportunities just because.

Preface: This does not apply to everyone.

You want $100 off of the PS3, some maybe even $50.
Argument: Xbox is $100 less.
You intend to play online multiplayer
$100 savings for xbox, reduce by $50 for XBL gold.
Savings now $50.
You want wireless network access for your console (Note: NOT I can haz switch and long ethernet cable).
Subtract $20-$80 depending on your technical ability.
Savings of $30 or no more savings.

This is just a basic situation, not accounting for games, quality, etc. Or even the fact that you may want more then one year of XBL, or the time value of money of said extra years of XBL.

In the end all consoles are a luxury item, and you don't ever need one. If Sony thinks they can manage without a price cut, let them try. If you have a better idea on how they can maximize profit, hell even minimize loss, and are complaining how you can't afford one, so many employers most be overlooking your genius. Also .

You forgot some,

You want an HD cable for your HD system - $50 (sony's price)
You want to be able to charge your controller without sitting 2 feet in front of your TV $5

looks like it's back up to a fair comparison again... oops I forgot, you'll save $100s on not buying all the best games cause they are on the 360...

See using old, tired, and stupid arguments to do a price comparison is fun!

Got my new ps3 from Dell for $319 with free shipping. No tax either because I live a sales tax free state.

Order late Thursday night and it was at my door on Monday.

It takes only 3 minutes to google for dell coupons and you save lots of money.

With decent blu-ray players still costing around $250-300, whining about $400 is futile. Being able to toss 2 components out of my home theater has been awesome. It's down to PS3, 360, Receiver, Satellite.

This will probably get down-voted, but I don't care.

I'm not even a Sony fanboy (I own all three consoles), but leave Sony alone already. If you're upset about this, you have the right, but you need to realize a few things: 1) The PS3 is a good bargain for what you are getting (and I do mean FOR WHAT YOU ARE GETTING), and 2) There's something called the free market here in America where speaking with our wallets is more effective than speaking with our mouths. Get a 360 or a Wii if you really think it's a better deal, sheez, and quit whining. 3) Sony is probably realizing what Nintendo has known all along -- profitability is more important than market share.

Maybe it's because of my age (36), that I'm forced to agree with the posters who have argued that people are cheap. Honestly, $400.00 is not that expensive. If you can not afford the price of the PS3 now, then there's a thing called "saving for it". Put $100 away each month or even $50 each month and you will be able to afford.

On the aside, if you do not have room in you budget to put $50 away; then you have bigger things to worry about then not be able to afford a PS3, i.e,. you need to learn how to better budget and manage your money.

And yes, the aforementioned comment will get flamed - but who cares. The point is that its laughable to hear people say they can not afford the PS3 yet have no problems dropping 100 at a bar every weekend or buying designer named jeans and other clothes. My friends are prime example of this mentality - oh, the PS3 is too expensive but can you hold on a second, I need to drop $8.00 on a latte from Starbucks and buy six cases of beer for the weekend.

The point is, most people, if they were really honest with themselves and were willing to sacrifice a little would be able to afford the PS3. Those complaining, at least amongst the people I know, are those who simply want everything but don't want to do what is neccessary, i.e., actually work and not spend foolishly.

So, keep the PS3 priced as it is and let people actually do what we had to do in the olden days when wanting to purchase something - work for it and save up for it.

If the price for the ps3 is fine the way it is why are developers and publishers asking for a price cut? The only ones crying here are those who already own one. Keep it the same price it is now til the end of time it still will be in last place when it comes to sales. The giant that Sony is has gambled and lost. Sure its a great machine but a machine none the less. So being one of thousands who are "cheap" or "on the fence" or just plain smart when it comes to saving money. How many of you were forced to buy a ps3 bundle on release day? Or realize that the only way to get the real value of your brand new console is to buy a HDTV? In reality Sony played you all, they advertise that you can play blu-ray movies on your game machine. If you have a copatible display. Two years ago HDTVs only came in Big and Bigger with price tags to match. Of course your going to defend your purchase and say nothing but good things about how you have gotten every pennies worth out of it. Well the numbers don't lie. PS3 is in third place for a reason. How do you account for that? It isn't just being cheap. The Wii took first place with less to show for it. How do you explain these things. Sony poisoned thier own well with a release day price well out of the reach of "Joe Average". Who also had to go buy a compatible display and movies that were twice the price of the ones they were used to buying. The display you bought with your new PS3 is now half the price and twice the size. The ps3 is two hundred bucks cheaper then day one, so whats another $100? Do you own Sony stock? Then let the majority speak up now and tell Sony that we'll buy a PS3 when were good and ready. Take another $100 off and maybe i'll be ready to buy. If you already own one then thats great and you should be proud that your in a small group of people that can say "I spent thousands to enjoy my ps3".

Well it looks like the Price drop is for the PS2 not the PS3.

The PS2 will now be $99........... WTF? Why it take so long to get to the normal mass market price?

The Gamecube dropped to $99 on September 24, 2003. (2 gamecubes duct taped together is now $249)

If it takes a 10 years for the PS2 to get down to a mass market price good luck waiting for a cheap PS3.

I think the price is comparable on the systems. YES I would like a price drop but look at cost. I don't see one till june when most system price drops happen after E3. Here is what it cost to setup each. Which one cost more?

Playstation 3 80 gig. $400, Second controller $50, Two greatest hits games $60 Total ($510.00)

Xbox 360 60 gig with two games $300, Second controller with rechargeable batt. $50, recharge station with one batt $30, wireless adapter $90, And $40, a year to play online Total ($510.00)

Wii with wii sports $250, Second wii mote $40 and nunchuk $20 Cheap charging station and two bats $30, two classic controllers $40 (If you want to play older games) $30 (If you want to use a wired Internet connection.) and if you download many games a sd card $20 for 2 gig Total ($430.00) The wii now supports up to 32 gig sd cards $100 on the cheap side and that is still half the 360 space with less function. so could be the same price as other two systems. $430 -$510 (Depends on size of SD card)

I am sure someone is upset buy this but its ok they didn't read it all anyway. I have owned all of these systems and payed more for them than current cost. I don't live with my parents and have not for ten years. I knew they were coming out and saved there was notice. I think out of the box the ps3 is best didn't have to buy anything extra to play everything get on line or use up batts because Xbox and wii come with regular batt. I also know that you dont have to buy everything at once but to make the systems even this is the cost. I am also sure you can find the stuff cheaper The prices are from wally world site. now just think how they would compare if the ps3 was $100 cheaper. It is bull to believe a company would sell a product with out profit for over a year I know they do for awhile because they count on secondary sells. I guess they could be following GMs business plan. Remember no company says were raking in the money buy more we won't lower cost. And we would like to let you know were lowering the price in a few months but buy now. Flame Away.

They're trying to make a profit on the thing, and as long as people are buying it, which they are actually doing, there's not justification. And no, "because I want them to drop it" doesnt count. They need to get the price of production lower and they do that by making more systems the more they make the cheaper production gets and the lower the price can be while still making the company money. So they arnt denying a price drop to be arrogant they're, doing it because they feel the system is worth the price people are paying for it and because they need the money.

You're either skipping a few steps in cause-and-effect or think that making MOAR causes the production price to drop. Do you mean the income offsets the cost, or that added revenue can be spent to production research, or what?

Shouldn't this announcement have happened allready? Or was this just a ploy to attract punters to the Kotaku website? Should have known this would happen if Smarthouse was involved (shakes fist).

Quite clearly the vast majority of users here would love to see a price drop, at long last. Firmware, shirmware. I wanna get my Warhawk on before it becomes a last gen game.

To those defending the current PS3 price, sure it is great value, still, but so are Mercedes (well maybe not, but you get my point). It's not just about being able to afford it, it's about being able to justify the purchase. Sure i could put in on my credit card, we can all do that easily enough, but the thing is can I really justify spending $699 Australian on a console, albeit a very good console with this new fangled Blu Ray thing. Cos if I justify that purchase, then i'll also be justifying buying some new games, extra controller, remote and maybe even some Blu Ray disks - no eff that, they're way too expensive. And I recently purchased a HD Plasma so it's not as if I don't splurge once in a while.

With my Wii rotting in a corner, and my PS2 now long forgotten, my PC is seeing all the action at the moment and that will only change if the PS3 drops in price substantially, in Australia. I'd like to see the Killzone 2 bundle drop to $499 and I think that's fairly realistic as BigW sells it for $646, and JB Hifi has 3 games bundled for $699 and we've seen the 40gb models previously run-out for $599. If Sony doesn't do this soon, then alot of us will no longer be excited by the current gen of consoles. Alot of us will find that our PCs play most of the best games anyway, so the luxury of a lounge based unit is diminishing. And we all know that blu-rays' will become as hum-drum as DVD players soon enough.

"the value we're delivering with PS3."

You mean, like PLAYING PS2 GAMES WITHOUT CHANGING THE INPUT?!

Still don't have, nor have the means to, get a PS3 yet, but, hey, at least the beasts play PS-frikkin-ONE games, so I could finally nix my S-Video cable (necessary for PS1ing) and, for MOAR MONNIES, by a component cable. Y'know, to accentuate the HD cable for the Foreman grill.

The price was too high in the first place, has been kept too high for who knows what reason - even though they have had disappointing sales figures. Sony's high price caused Xbox360 AND Nintendo (Wii) to reneg on thier well advertised price drops - they figured "Sony is still high - so why lower our prices?". They OWE it to the consumer to lower the price. They owe it to themselves if they ever want to sell units. Sony made it to where they are by selling the most consoles, not selling a few at ridiculously high prices. And Nintendo is proving it today - it's the console with the most saturation that makes it - not extra doo-dads that have nothing to do with gaming and only puff up the price.

Sony should be striving to aim for a price that a teen or a kid can afford, and stop trying to appeal to grown folks (so much). That said - sub $200.00 SHOULD BE what the thing costs.

I stumbled upon this forum and what sk8monroe81 said was disturbing. It seems like some people fail to realize the brute power and entertainment value of the PS3 priced at $600.00. If you'd simply take the time to look at the components that make up a PS3, and its specs. you would see that the console at the initial price was a bargain. It's the equivilance of a $1,200.00 computer, oh, and did I forget to mention that Blu-Ray players(even though they've come down in price) on there own are still fairly expensive. Sony took advantage of Blu-Ray while it's still decently new age and thrust themselves into the new frontier.
