According to Enterbrain figures, the Xbox 360 and PS3 have both achieved milestones in Japan. As headlines would have you believe, the Xbox 360 has surpassed the one million mark for consoles sold, whereas the PS3 has done much more admirably, pushing over three million systems on the populace. The Xbox 360 achieved this after almost four years on the market (it released in Japan in December, 2005), wheras the PS3 claimed its figure nearly three years after launching in November, 2006.
Clearly, both consoles are big in Japan. Mostly because they're huge consoles.

I agree, especially considering it's been 4 years, one of them being w/o competition and MS also providing 3 differently priced SKUs. Either way though, 1 million is still an achivement.
Maybe with more timed exclusives they can catch up?

Considering how the original Xbox sold in Japan, I'd say those number for the 360 are respectable.
How quickly most people tend to forget or overlook the fact that the original Xbox was Microsofts FIRST entry into the console market. It may not have had an impact as big as the original Playstation but it helped get the 360 to where it is today.
Knock Microsoft all you want... just ask yourself, if Microsoft is doing so poorly, where's Sega's console? You remember Sega, right? The OTHER console other than Nintendo.

"just ask yourself, if Microsoft is doing so poorly, where's Sega's console?"
Microsoft lost $4.5billion on the origional Xbox and have lost $1billion on the Xbox 360. I can't find the total Sega lost on the Dreamcast but did find that their record loss was $110 million in 9 months. The loses Microsoft have made are vastly overshadow Sega's loss and the only reason Microsoft are still in the console business is becuase they have large cash reserves made from Windows and Office sales. If it was any other company that made the Xbox and Xbox 360 they'd probably be out of business now.
While gamers think the Xbox 360 has been a huge success most investors think otherwise since they're only interested in profit, not who's winning the console war. Many investors want Microsoft to get out of consumer electronics completely since they've done nothing but lose money in massive quantities since entering the market.

@d-Dog: the Dreamcast was a VERY good Console. but without developer support due to using a CD instead of a DVD for media they signed their own death warrant.....hell a LOT of the people that worked on the Dreamcast went to MS to help build the XBox. with that said, if Sega would have still been making consoles would the XBox even had done as good as it did??

I actually just used this in a paper about multinational companies entering Japan. After Japan's awful recession of the 90s, it was essentially considered a dead market for multinationals, especially considering how difficult it is to break into the Japanese market. However, the strides that Microsoft has made with the Xbox 360 show that there is growth to be had there. Consider this: the xbox sold 2% of what the PS2 sold in Japan. The 360 has sold 33% of what the PS3 has sold. That is an enormormous increase, and is quite respectable, despite the losses for the original Xbox. Also, Microsoft's domestic and European sales counter the big loss they have in Japan, and furthermore, they are producing a number of very popular first-party games now that are giving them more profit. And then there is Live, which lengthens the gravy train. Microsoft should grab themselves a tasty cake in reward

Sega had 3 losing consoles and/or peripherals before the Dreamcast being a success and by that time, it was too little too late. Need I remind you about the SegaCD, 32X, and Saturn? (But good God my old modded Saturn was the best console of the 32bit era; too bad most people outside of Japan didn't get to witness the greatness.)
Microsoft had 1 console letdown 'til now - the original Xbox. Notice the use of "failure" for Sega versus "letdown" for Microsoft, because the Xbox was mildly successful in the US and Europe. The SegaCD, 32X and Saturn were not.
Secondly, Microsoft has more than a software devision; they have a hardware devision that involves things other than game consoles, and they do make money off that hardware divison.

Thirdly, the 360 is turning a profit now.

That's great for the 360!!!. ..well kinda...
Didn't the original xbox only push something like 100,000 units in japan?
No surprise that the PS3 sold more, but only 3 million is a big surprise in my opinion...shouldn't it be alot higher?

For a system that cost 50% more than the PS2 at launch, its doing pretty darn well...more so when you count all the fuck up's from Sony...

There's only about 7.8 million Wiis in Japan. Japan is not as big as you might think it is. So 3 million/1million is still quite impressive.
