The PS2 is the cheapest and easiest way to get a group of four people to join a pretend rock band. Not only is the console cheap, but the games and instruments are much cheaper than their next-gen counterparts. You are losing online play and DLC, but for those on a budget, this is easily the best value in music gaming right now.

Rock Band Special Edition - The PS2 version of Rock Band is quite a deal. The Special Edition bundle includes a guitar, a drum kit, a microphone and a copy of the first Rock Band. It may not have all the bells and whistles of Rock Band 2, but this is a great way of introducing yourself to the genre.

Frontman Wireless Guitar - Unfortunately, the Rock Band Special Edition bundle only includes one guitar. If you want true four player action, you'll need another standalone guitar. The Nyko Frontman Guitar is one of the most affordable ones on the market, and it will work on both Rock Band and Guitar Hero.

Yuck. I will never buy a third party instrument unless it's more expensive than the original and of dramatically better quality, like the ION drumset. Although that's too expensive, so I'll just stick with Harmonix's and Red Octane's instruments.

I just bought the Rock Band bundle for PS2, and it's worth every penny! What I like most about it is the fact that it works with both PS2 and PS3, meaning once the PS3 drops ($50 in June and another $50 around Christmas is my guess), you can just buy Rock Band 2 for PS3 and you're set!
