PS2 drops to ?99 in Europe, no drop for UK
We've received word from a SCEE representative that the PS2 price drop, which was announced today for the US, will also take place in Europe. On the mainland, the PS2 will drop from around €130 to €99, while remaining frozen at around £90 in the UK.There's no word on when this price cut will take place or why the UK remains immune, but we suggest you keep an eye on your local retailer for more information.

The reason we didn't get a price drop will be because of just how weak the pound has become against the euro. €99 is now equal to about £92.
Agumen @ Mar 31st 2009 10:37AM
The reason the UK remains immune is that the sterling is so damn weak that the Japanese companies are making far less money in yen per sale. So they just can't afford to drop the price. Sucks for the UK, but they've got bigger issues in their economy than PS prices at the mo'. Because the rest of Europe uses the euro it's pretty stable in comparison. If the Irish still used their own money it'd be worth next to nothing at this stage. Euro is pretty useful after all.

Oh, how the tables have turned.

Doesn't matter. If I want a LAST gen console I can get a second hand one for dirt cheap. and by dirt cheap i mean £50.
Archon @ Mar 31st 2009 11:29AM
Wut? I paid 25 quid for mine. Hardly used with two controllers and a memory card.
Brian @ Mar 31st 2009 12:32PM
@Archon: Well it depends on where you shop.
We could have went to different second hand store shops.
DeathroW @ Mar 31st 2009 12:40PM
Doesn't matter? The console has still been selling very well IN ITS 9TH YEAR!
We still see PS2 games make it in the top 10 sofware sales in some countries and it is currently the big console in india.
I'd say it matters, especially as a celebration to the most sucessful console ever made. It is the PS2's last year in the market, this is just its leaving present.
Kyle @ Mar 31st 2009 12:57PM
Yeah, £50 is a bit much for a used PS2 Id say.
iBob @ Mar 31st 2009 6:49PM
£15 for my gamecube ...
Sexualchocolate @ Mar 31st 2009 10:51AM
Yeah Brian, about 4 months ago, $99 would equal about £50 - for a brand new last gen console.
We're being screwed by the exchange rate right now.
dextro @ Mar 31st 2009 10:54AM
I thought that was the price already here in Europe since I've seen the PS2 like that since Christmas (without a bundled game though, wonder if this price drop is for the console WITH a bundled game...)
Negativecool @ Mar 31st 2009 11:17AM
Sorry, I'm still trying to wrap my head around why any territory would need a PS2 price drop.
Public/media everywhere: "Duuude! Drop the price of the frickin PS3 already!"
Sony: "Oh boy! Do we have a huge announcement!"
Public/media everywhere: "Finally!"
Sony: "Just what everyone's been waiting for, we're dropping the price...
...of the PS2!"
Public/media everywhere: "oookay.......???!!!"
I guess I'm just a business n00b, because this pricing strategy makes no sense to me...at all.
Shattered Ice @ Mar 31st 2009 11:23AM
You can get a brand new ps2 for around £50-60 so it works out that price cuts don't matter.
Joanna D @ Mar 31st 2009 11:54AM
Sony have completely lost it. £99 is barely cheaper than the price some retailers are selling Xbox 360 consoles for.
Lee @ Mar 31st 2009 12:02PM
Ok then, no deal.
Considering you can buy an arcade 360 for £110 this is just an epic rip off. Poor poor mistake.
Bobulous @ Mar 31st 2009 1:08PM
True, but a cheap PS2 probably isn't really aimed at the same people as a 360 arcade. This is going to be really popular in Eastern Europe, because it's dirt cheap, so are the nearly 2000 games and there are no extra costs like hard drives, Live charges, a broadband account, etc. This isn't so much intended for the developed world as the developing world. Although there will be families in the west who are poor and want a cheap console with a big games library. Just like Sony did with the PSOne, really.
I'd still like a PS3 price drop, please Sony. And while you're at it, do a firmware update to give us back backward compatibility. K thanx.

Did they ever release the 3rd version of the PS2 in Europe? the slim one with the power box inside...
Gakera @ Mar 31st 2009 2:45PM
Be sure "Europe" does not include Iceland in any way shape or form ... or currency. I only say that since your blessed map includes my fragile rock.
