Industry professionals having trouble finding work

One issue is that with so many industry professionals pounding the streets, studios have their pick of talent. According to the Times, Ray Miller, an exec at Crackdown dev Realtime Words, collected a shopping bag full of resumes from job seekers at GDC, commenting, "We've been so busy talking to people that we haven't even touched our lunches." Still, as ECA blog GameCulture points out, all is not doom and gloom for those still on the outside, and with game sales in the US showing a steady increase so far in 2009 there is reason to hope that the recently unemployed will be able to find work soon. Then again, they could just start up their own company instead. That's working out alright for some of the downturn's victims so far.

i know, i was trying to find a decent 2nd job, instead of cutting back on my gaming habit, but its tough to do right now.
Dirty @ Apr 1st 2009 10:55AM
Wouldn't getting a second job cut down on your gaming habit as well? There are only so many minutes in a day.
ice~ @ Apr 1st 2009 5:57PM

We are living in a world where even mc donalds isn't hiring. Shit sucks. How the hell did it get this bad so fast?
ALH @ Apr 1st 2009 9:41AM
Spare a thought for graduates- it was already hard to get into the industry without experience, and the recession hasnt made it any easier!
Hardcore @ Apr 1st 2009 9:53AM
Here is broad question : Who is responsible for economic recession?
TeDwArD @ Apr 1st 2009 10:49AM

The Dark Wayne @ Apr 1st 2009 12:12PM
says the guy with the avatar of Leela being raped
SirFishouse @ Apr 1st 2009 1:53PM
My avatar does not mock the lord or the poor. There is no paradox there.
The Dark Wayne @ Apr 1st 2009 9:47PM
no but it does mock rape, which is, im pretty certain, a lot worse than mocking jobless people
The Dark Wayne @ Apr 1st 2009 12:11PM
Ha, my uncle had a sign like that when he was laid off from boeing. He put a sign in his truck that said "Will perform differential equations for food"
Arnie @ Apr 1st 2009 12:52PM
The increase in sales is not necessarily a good indicator of job trends IMO.
The problem is that mega-blockbusters are increasing in sales at the expense of unique titles. Not that unique and different gameplay are truly suffering but to stand out is becoming increasingly difficult in these times.
Normal people, and not gamers hold the majority purchase power IMO and they are gravitating towards familiar brands or those which are advertised heavily(almost always AAA titles) in other media. So I dont see people getting newer jobs unless they are really really brilliant which in itself is hard to do from outside the industry as more exposure may lead to better and newer ideas.

Is it just me or is that guy wearing the complete and total douchebag uniform?
* Unbuttoned sport jacket - check
* ...Over an undoubtedly ludicrous graphic tee - check
* Big girly metrosexual man-purse - check
* Backwards, oversized baseball cap - check
* Shitty sideburns - check
* Soul patch - check
Also it's pretty douchey to be bitching about your white-collar joblessness when others are having it much worse.
SirFishouse @ Apr 1st 2009 3:20PM
EXACTLY
CJLopez @ Apr 1st 2009 2:09PM
Dude, i programm for food.... which i buy with the money i recieve from my code.
Its a shame what we are going through tis days. I'm the only one on my family with a job, my mom is taking some elementary school teaching courses to see if she gets a job on a school as teacher and my sis can't find any job. Arquitects nowadays have it pretty though to find a job here in Sonora and many who worked on arizone are being layed off.
Its hard being a hardcore gamer and have to restrict myself from buying games with the money I make
mfuzzler @ Apr 3rd 2009 6:48PM
@CJLopez, I hope you don't code as bad as you spell, otherwise you might be looking for work too soon. Jesus, seriously "arizone"? WTF?
Also, am I the only one who finds people bitching about their lack of money to buy games just a little superfluous? "Wah, I can't afford my new $70 game this month"
Get a fucking clue people, some in the world can't even afford food.
