Just Add Water has confirmed that its upcoming first-party project, currently called "Project V," will be an old school shooter. "It's first-party for Sony, so we can't talk about it too much, but it's a retro shooting game," Stewart Gilray told VG247. He also confirmed a simultaneous PSP and PS3 release.
This upcoming PlayStation Network game will be fully unveiled at E3 later this year. Although the game sounds simple conceptually, there must be something truly special about it for Sony to pick it up as a first-party title. "We showed it to Sony last year and they snapped it up straight away." If it can come close to the spirit of Everyday Shooter or Super Stardust, then we know we have a winner.

I 3rd, 4th and 5th that! And i hope it has online co-op, most of my mates don't like old-school shmups. :(
You guys should give Soldner-X a try too, if you haven't already. (but i guess there is a 95% probability you have, seeing as you are shmup fans)

I miss vertical-scrolling! Ditto adolson, I find side-scrolling not appealing at all (and I'll be very disappointed if this game is).
My first and only vertical-scrolling game I stuck with was Tyrian. Anyone else plays that game? I know it's not a very good one, but it has a place in me and my brother's childhood :D

My very first shmup was Life Force on the NES and it featured both vertical and horizontal scrolling, so i like both equally.

i hope it's vertical too. i remember getting turned on to SHMUPs back in the day at my local skating rink/arcade/pizza parlor with Aero Fighters 2. that game was friggin awesome. i was hooked after that. i've tried a couple of the new SHMUP's (1942 being the most recent one i bought) but none of them really live up to that experience.

why is it we get these old school retro spaceship shooter games now? why can't we get more PSOne classics, like Resident Evil?

Nothing is better than Stardust, Nothing!
I refuse to believe this is anything worth paying attention to!
In my opinion, Stardust is the greatest, the others are good, but no where near the quality of SSHD (Super Stardust HD)

I really loved Ikargua. It was Zen awesomeness.
Hopefully it will be in that same vein of gameplay and fun.
And yes, that is also vertical. I never cared for Gradius, R-Type, or similar side scrollers.
(Actually, even though I already bought it once, I'd pay for a PS3 port of Ikaruga instantly ... maybe even a nice HD remake?)
I hear Radiant Silvergun was also quite impressive. Bring that out too.

Seriously, I loved Super Star Dust HD and Everyday Shooter, but should Sony really be doing ANOTHER shump when it desperately needs more exclusives in every other genre?

My thoughts exactly. There are already several games like this on PSN, none of which seem to harness the PSP's true potential, which I find disappointing.
The more shumps released, the more they seem like shovelware now.

Tower Defense games also need to stop, there's something like 4 or 5 already!
although i do like shmups a lot, none besides Stardust truly captured my attention, maybe this one does.
