Very true. Just a week ago, I bought a used copy of They Might Be Giants' Mink Car album. (The fact that it has Boss of Me didn't hurt, either.)

a used book is very different from a video game.

A used cd means it's content is probably swimming on the internet.

The thing is Nintendo users love their games and most will even save them for archiving. I used to sell everything once the new thing came out, now I don't give a rat's ass and throw everything in a box.

I agree. What's he even talking about? If I but a used game, I can't unlock everything in the game? Ok? Also, if I haven't played it, it's new to me. I guess I'm missing out on the new game scent, but I'll be ok. Thanks anyway Reg.

I only trade in the games that I really don't think I'll ever play again. Which is very few.

But that doesn't mean I don't buy a helluva lot of used games.

I was with you until about 2 weeks ago when I discovered the majesty of Goozex. I cleared out 4 or 5 of my "will probably never play them again" discs - I even got the equivalent of 5 bucks for the utterly useless Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack. My actual purchases of games is fixing to drop to next to nothing this year thanks to this service.

Other media don't have used sales? Uh, no; in fact, my local used games shop has *more* used CDs and movies, and almost as many books. And people play Zelda... to unlock new levels...? What the fuck?

Reggie, either you need to lay off the drugs, or come up with an April Fool's joke that's funny.

I would have thought opposite for the Wii.

I always thought used games was a large portion of profit for Nintendo....But the opposite for who ever makes the games, since games can drop as low as 10 bucks.

Course that might be why he said that. He doesn't want to promote used games since that would encourage people not to touch new games until the price drops and hurt the developers.

Of course he's not going to condone used games. Nintendo is also a software company and just like the other game developers out there, complaining that they aren't getting a piece of the used game pie, they aren't getting any money for those used game sales either.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to head over to FYE to buy some used CDs and DVDs.

Up here in Green Bay Wisconsin, we have 3 DIFFERENT stores dealing in only reselling used media... Mega Media Exchange (which has a few other locations statewide), Pre-Played (which has a few other locations statewide) and GBGames (Obviously only in Green Bay, with two locations)... And I rarely buy new anymore. I used to have a thing against used DVDs or video games, but now I just prefer used. When you factor in shipping on Ebay, it's almost cheaper to buy from a used store... And you can be 100% sure everything is in good condition on the spot. Selling is a whole different story... But I refuse to go near gamestop. Their prices are horrible compared to the other places and the other places seem even more strict on buying the discs... None of those "gamestop covers" or any of that BS...

Uh what he's saying is that book publishers don't seem to be constantly worried about the vibrant used book market taking away sales from the company or authors.

Yeah, I think this is what he was going for, but he could have worded it better. Something like, "You don't see used book sales cannibalizing sales of new books." As for DVDs and CDs....who still buys those?

In my personal opinion, used sales generate a certain amount of buzz that probably leads to a company making money they wouldn't have further on down the line.

Let's look at his wording, shall we?

"Describe another form of entertainment that has a vibrant used goods market. Used books have never taken off. You don't see businesses selling used music CDs or used DVDs."

Now the first sentence can obviously be interpreted in a number of ways, generally depending on context. It could be either "pick one to describe" or "I challenge you to find such a market, because I don't believe any exist". So we must delve into the context to understand it further.

The second sentence clearly asserts, in context of the first sentence, that no "vibrant" used goods market exists for books. While this is unequivocally the only interpretation that isn't stretching, the ambiguity of "vibrant" still leaves some room for misunderstanding.

Fortunately, the last sentence makes everything crystal clear. We now have an implied definition of a "vibrant" used goods market. A used goods market is vibrant if businesses (one can also infer *big* businesses) are selling used goods (one can also infer *ubiquitously*). This is derived from the clear assertion that businesses do not, in fact, sell used CDs and DVDs. The assertion is demonstrably fallacious, given the existence of successful businesses such as Half-Price Books and CD Warehouse.

Additionally, all three other major media have now been identified in the quoted excerpt as lacking notable used goods markets, making it clear that the proper interpretation of the first sentence is, in fact, the "challenge".

If Reggie Fils-Aime meant to say that publishers aren't worried about those markets, he failed utterly and to such a degree that it is rather shocking.

I agree with Reggie in part. I don't sell my games because I like to consider that I still have them if I ever wish to replay them (and some of them I do years down the line).

I agree that I don't see many places selling used books, CDs and DVDs. Yes there are places (most book places are charity shops around where I'm from) but not as prevalent.

The reasoning behind buying a used game and a used book are different though.

Buying a used game, the game will still play the exact same experience as the game bought brand new (assuming the game works. This is the same for CDs and DVDs. I would argue if it is the same for books though. Used books can get very tattered, and personally I prefer my books to be in good condition to maximise the pleasure reading them (tattered books annoy me).

The main factor though is price. I see many new books (novels anyway - don't even start on the price of medical books) that are selling for £3-7 each, and offers for buying 2 for £7, 3 for £10 etc in many book shops and supermarkets. These are offers on good authors who are well known as well. DVDs are normally around £15 new, or £5-10 when the DVD has been released for a few months and has slipped off the charts. CDs are around £5-10 mostly. Games on the other hand are around £40-50. That leaves a lot of room for value for money in getting used games for £20 than the DVDs, CDs and books offer used.

In my city, I think there is about twice as many used CD/DVD stores and about four times as many used book stores as there is used video game stores. Plus, all the places that sell used games have a comparable selection of DVDs for sale.

I mean, come on. Does he think people don't need textbooks anymore? Or want to find old comic books, novels, movies, and cds? Hell, I think there are more stores that sell records than used video games here.

But getting on topic, I'm not certain what Reggie's talking about. He's apparently been blinded by the amount of money he's receiving from Wii sales. Maybe he even has a vault full of money like Scrooge McDuck...

Maybe what he means is that they're not big business, and they don't happen enough to harm book publishers. I really doubt used book stores make as much money as Gamestop does out of used games. The people I know wouldn't consider buying a used book because the saving you make is tiny.

College textbooks are a different story, and that's why they continually update their textbooks to make older versions appear less useful.

Fail. If you do not read ... that's your problem. You probably should play Zelda less.

> You don't see businesses selling used music CDs or used DVDs.

Actually, used CDs were quite big in different parts of the world. Especially on eBay.
But even more importantly, CD exchange I think never ever stopped.
Well, after spring of Napster and MP3s, not so much anymore.

I think Reggie is so out of touch with reality with his comments. People are all about used products like books and CDs. And clearly they're all about used games otherwise Gamestop wouldn't be seeing record profits quarter after quarter. Companies like Gamestop make the majority of their money on used game sales because to them its mostly profit. Where has Reggie been living where he believes that Nintendo games are any different than any used media in history?

There was an article here a while ago comparing how often games are traded in, and Wii games, especially Nintendo published games, fared much better than the others(I think one company did better than Nintendo, Blizzard probably). So he may know something about products that people feel they want to keep.

Pay attention to the context--he's talking in "Venture Beat." His bullshitting was not for you, it was for the venture capitalists, so he's going to make crap up that they want to hear.

Always remember, the first "duty" of a public corporation's CEO when speaking publicly is to sell his company's stock to his audience, not to speak truthfully.
