It's pretty sad/funny when the only competition the Wii has is last generations champ. This must get some peoples undies in a bunch!

Sony and Microsoft just like to pretend that the PS3 and 360 aren't competing with the Wii. Fighting for second place. :P

The only way I see that actually happening is if they start advertising it again. The mainstream doesn't give a shit about what's cheap and what's not. They only care about stuff that's heavily advertised and stuff they know about from word of mouth.

There is a difference between overpriced and expensive.. the PS3 is expensive, far from overpriced though.

Really Sony? Do you really think that knocking $30 off the price of your nine-year-old system, no matter how excellent it is/was, is really going to steal any sort of noticeable market share away from Nintendo's Wii? Really?

I'll be the first to admit that the PS2's library is nearly unparalleled when it comes to triple-A titles, and at $100, the system is a great value if you have yet to pick one up, you know, the past nine years. Still, expecting this move to make even a dent in the sales of the Wii is, i think, asking a bit too much from the PS2. The Wii, whether it was due to genius marketing on Nintendo's part, the world's previously untapped desire to flail their arms while gaming, or just plain ol' lightning in a bottle, has taken over like very few game machines have before. Whether or not it deserves the status it has become some sort of pop culture necessity.

Of the people I personally know who own a Wii, probably half of them had not owned a console ever, as far as I know. Nor had they shown any interest in one (at least in the 10-15 years I've known them) before getting their hands on a Wiimote. Yes, I do think it is silly to see these people owning a Wii for a year or two and ignoring what I feel are great games in order to continue playing Wii Sports and picking up the occasional "party" game, but I can't deny that they are happy. What these "casual" gamers, for lack of a better word, are not doing is going to notice this price drop one bit. They happily paid $250 for their "Wii Sports machine" and they are quite content knowing nothing about the Xbox's and PS3/2's of the world. They will never even know this happened.

Sorry Sony. You may grab a few more sales with this price drop, but those blissfully unaware folk that chip in (along with regular gamers) to give the Wii its astronomical sales figures will never bat an eye at your near decade old Playstation thingamajig. They've got better things to do, like going home and bowling a few frames before taking their heart meds and heading off to bed.

I know exactly what you mean. i used to be a maintenance worker at a retirement home, and i always got called down to the lounge to set up "that bowling game". The price drop will go unnoticed to everyone but the select few that never had one before or used to own one, and want to pick up some AAA titles. although most are smart enough to look on craigslist for one (and 42 games, 4 controllers, multitap, network adapter, eyetoy, all the guitar hero games and a sweet soul calibur II skin.) for the same price. Sony knows they can still make some money from the ps2. and a price drop is just their way of reminding people that its not dead yet.

Pretty widely reported, which would make it a pretty epic April Fools joke if that is the case. For 2 reasons; 1 - that's it's so widely reported, and 2 - it would be an epically lame and boring April Fools joke.

they are kind of missing the point of the wii, my parents couldnt pick up a ps2 controller and figure out how to play a game.

the wii sells because literally anyone who is not legally blind can play the games, it is really amazing that sony is really trying to push the ps fucking 2

It's funny how both press releases responding to the price drop (Sony's and Microsoft's), created the idea that the Wii is competing with neither the PS3 nor the 360.

It is indeed pretty funny. However, Nintendo kind of did that to themselves by announcing before the Wii released that it wasn't competing against the 360 & PS3. Can't really blame them for picking up on what Nintendo themselves actually said.

$100 for A PS2?!!!!! What a joke, that system should be at least $50-$75 now.

PS2, the only reason there will be a PS4. lol

We are talking about a new PS2, silly. You can easily buy a used PS2 for that $50-$75 price point. I'm asking you nicely not to troll ... please ... for me. I think so much higher of you know and I don't want to think back of the fenix from a year ago.

I don't think $30 was what was holding people back from buying this dinosaur. Don't get me wrong, It was great in it's heyday, but nothing but crap is coming out for it now and anything that's available on it has a much better version on any other console.

If casual consumers don't already have a 9-year-old system, I don't think saving $30 on it will convert anyone. Sony should have done this a year at least ago anyway.

This is interesting...

I could absolutely see a strategy in which Sony begins to compete directly against the Wii with the PS2 (possibly with a newer looking case). Has any other hardware manufacturer supported two systems at once?

Why don't they just drop it down to $49.99. It would be a nice addition to the PS3 consoles that don't have backwards compatibility.

you totally had me until the gamecube arguement, yuck.

anyways, i totally see the ps2 sales increasing, but only time will tell. if i were to a parent shopping for my 7,8,9,10 year old...and i had two options...i could either buy a wii that came w/ one game...and say no more games for a long time because money is tight, or get a ps2 w/ a bundle of games under 200 bucks (there was some post on joystiq playstation, or joystiq front page about creative ps2 bundles under 200) i'd probably go w/ the ps2. i think oen bundle was the metal gear collection, plus god of war II...we'll, i'm sure you can eek out god of war 1 for about 6 dollars on ebay.

anyways, my epic games and a brand new console for 200 vs a 250 wii...i'd take the ps2.

The sad part is, they really could have given the PS2 a revival, of sorts.

First of all, allow for external hard drives and network adapters to work via the USB port. Bundle them with a "PSN-Lite" disk that has some drivers and an interface for connecting to the network. Then, set up an Wii-store style download center where you could buy any PS/PS2 games, movies, and casual games over the net to the HDD.

Basically, use the power of the intertubes to turn the PS2 into a casual games console. Sure, it won't play Resistance, but it would still plays Rock Band like a Xbox360 (sans DLC)
