A relatively obscure version of Namco's classic shooter Galaga is coming to iPhone, along with the least obscure version of Galaga! The newly announced Galaga Remix contains both the original 1981 game and a widescreen presentation of 1995's Galaga Arrangement, which features updated graphics, bosses, and various gameplay tweaks. The trailer after the break features footage from Arrangement.
Both games will be playable in one of three control schemes: virtual directional buttons, a sliding-based method, and tilting. According to Touch Arcade, the game "will arrive in the App Store any day now and will be priced at $5.99." This is what we want out of high technology: the ability to buy and play super-old games whenever we feel like it.
Though compared to some other games it looks much better in terms of gameplay and looks. Look at Squares crystal defender game on the iphone, its literally the same game found on the ipod store for like $3 more and costs $8. At least with this release they did more to warrant the price.
I find it overpriced when you can get the entire Wolfenstein 3D saga for 5 bucks, yet Namco thinks they should charge MORE for Galaga. Not saying Galaga is bad...but it's like charging 6 dollars for Pac-Man.
In general, I have to ask again. Why doesn't this site cover all the other cellphone games like Tornado Mania or 3D Tilt-a-World? It's not as if the i(cell)Phone is the first to offer games. It's not even the first to have motion controls.
Because cell phones didn't sell millions of dollars worth of games in just a couple months after releasing their service.
Because ordinary joe shmoes didn't make so much money off other phone gaming services that they could retire for the rest of their lives off of one game's profit.
Because it didn't make numerous well known developers that were about to go bankrupt , all of a sudden have more money than they knew what to do with.
Because "cell" phone games typically suck. The iPhone isn't an i(cell)Phone, it's an i(smart)Phone. Smart phones aren't cell phones.
Because it's the first smart phone to make smartphones truly popular to the non-business class of customers. Look how many clone's it's started. Smart phones used to be a niche class of mobile phone. Now it's replacing cell phones.
Side note: CEOs don't read Joystiq, but people like you and I do. People like you and I would own an iPhone before a Blackberry. Oh, and because I'm sure Joystiq got about a million emails asking for game reviews and news for the iPhone because it's a gaming console and people actually use it for gaming. A cell phone with a handfull of games, 99% crappy, won't really be considered a gaming platform, and I'm sure didn't get millions of people to email joystiq so that they would talk about them.
Orion, you are a bit crazy. Cell phone games suck at the same rate i(cell)Phone games suck. This game is a good example (not that it sucks). There have been lots of very successful cellphone games. One of the highest rated by ign.com being Tornado Mania! (it got a 10). As for the i(cell)Phone being as you say, "smart", many if not most disagree with you. It will one day in the future get the basics such as copy and paste but not yet.
Required, the iPhone is an industry-changing device (we all see that lacking cut-and-paste didn't really slow it down too much), and the games you keep bringing up that came out years ago were not on this device, few people other than yourself cared about them, and now that a new gaming platform has emerged in the iPhone, people are interested in seeing what's good for it. "Is 'Galaga' worth $5.99?" is now being asked by more people than ever and the time has come to cover games for the iPhone. Did joystiq care about mobile phone games this much when 'Tornado Mania' came out? No. But now they do. Times change.
Take away the fact that you don't like hearing about the iPhone as a gaming platform, and your sudden concern for 'Galaga 25th Anniversary Edition' or 'Tilt-A-World' or any of the other mobile phone games you mention becomes giggle-worthy. It's transparent: a few posters like you and Marty just don't like Apple or the iPhone.
I think you're looking at a long, losing uphill battle with this one. But it's not that big of a deal, really, is it? I mean, people want to know what games are good for the iPhone, it's a simple situation, and it's likely going to be 'touched on' more and more with gaming sites.
Oh yeah, one last thing: SMARTPHONE SMARTPHONE SMARTPHONE!
(Just messing with you there, buddy)
C'mon, let's go get a drink... After I finish this game of FlightControl...
This is patently untrue. There are a ton of cellphone games out and about and many are very well received by the gaming community. As I pointed out just a second ago, ign rated Tornado Mania! as a 10.
This is not Galaga Arrangement (1995). This is Galaga Arrangement (2005), a completely different (and inferior, IMO) game ported from the PSP version of Namco Museum.
