In this video, we compare the DSi to the DS Lite. Sure, most of the changes have been known for quite some time, but there's a difference between reading something and seeing it in action. We assure you, the screens look a lot larger in person.
i for got my N64 had a touch screen...actually maybe my memory is failing me because i don't remember the touch screen.
the DSi plus a few firmware updates will be a good competitor to the PSP. personally i enjoy the games on the DS better but this year is looking good for my PSP1000
Is it just me that gets really annoyed by unnecessary changing of things like chargers, just to piss the 3rd party producers off? Why be convenient to customers, when you can be a pain in the arse and squeeze out a few more pennies. Like you don't have enough money yet. Sheeseh.
Yeah, really. I bought a solar charger of eBay several years ago for my original DS. There's no way to use it with anything else unless I find a cable to splice into it. But the charger also broke in half so that is really the least of my worries. I was angry that the DS lite used a different charger cause then my car charger wouldn't work. Now they are changing it again.
Not too impressed with the extra features. The photo crap looks fun for 10 minutes if you're 8 or under and never heard of Photoshop. I'll take one camera with at least 1MP resolution over (2 cameras??) No need for the exterior camera. Maybe good for head shots but I'm not sure what you can expect of the quality of anything more than 4 feet away. The only good thing about the DSi is the online store and .5 inch larger screen but is that worth $40 more when you get less battery life?
Regarding battery life and screen brightness.... I would be interested in a comparison in brightness between the DS Lite and DSi. I know that the DSi has an additional brightness option, which takes a toll on the battery life. But what I want to know is which brightness option is equal to that of the highest option on the DS Lite. I think this would give us a better idea as to how long the battery will last under conditions that we are use to seeing.
Well, my gripes..... they aren't getting in the way of my preorder.
Here's why.
The DSi may not have the GBA slot, but are you guys such lazy turds that you can't play it on your old GBA? If you don't have one, what are you doing? It's 2009! GBA games? Really? No one uses that anymore. Wake up and smell the youth because obviously you're not getting the picture. They discontinued the GBA. DISCONTINUED. (Concerned with Guitar Hero? Don't be. It's a useless game and if you want to play it get an XBOX or whatever you use to play the big one on. Even then, the hype for that game died a few days after it was released)
The new matte finish.... oh God yes. Nintendo made a homerun with this bad boy. It looks sick, really, and they transformed the high gloss, little kids-toy-looking DS Lite to a chic, sophisticated look. I love the matte finish and I can't get over it. I just wonder if the stylus is matte; if it is, I'm sold 100000004%.
The menu system I believe is the most genious part of the new renovation (other than the matte finish) because of how polished it is. The NDS Phat and the NDSL was just so boring. Lifeless. Plain. Dull. This one actually brings something. You have OPTIONS. Seriously, I just enjoy it that much. It's easy access for quick gamers (if you haven't realised the NDS is not much of a hard-core gamer console, get help now.)
And to top all THAT off, they added so many little "clicks" to the system and made it work so well when put together. You can now hotswap the game cards, you don't need to the power off the system when you leave PictoChat or switch settings, you can turn the brightness settings from 1 to 5 just with the SELECT? (or START, don't remember) button. And if that's not enough, they came back with a very clicky D-Pad, BAXY, and L-R buttons.
But.... the battery life. I don't like that. Not at all. I agree on one thing, and that is that the DSi has certainly killed that originality of the DSL we all loved. You could take that thing anywhere for a good 5 or so hours, even 19 hours at the lowest setting! The DSi got a good impact of battery reduction when it went down to 3 to 17 hours or somewhere along those terms. The reduced charging time doesn't really help because an airplane, most cars, and the bathroom usually don't have sockets (atleast for me).
Basically, though, it's a 4 PRO and 1 CON thing for me. The pricetag won't matter much; they've sold 2,000,000 in Japan. That's around 100,000 of them A WEEK. 14,000 sold a DAY, roughly. I know the US is different than Japan but if they can afford a small tweak to an already great (but rough edged) system, why can't we?
That's just my (big) opinion, and I hope you actually consider, joystiq readers :)
wow, that is just garbage. don't get me wrong i think Nintendo is a great company, i mean wii, ds, 64, ect. were all great (xcept the "ahem" gcube).
i have owned and loved almost every Nintendo product but this just looks cheap, and i have a ds (original) cause the lite is kinda small and breaks rather easy, although its quite sleek looking.
Every generation the ds has slowly changed, here's the 10 main ways. 1. less speaker holes (bad, and with only 1 it just looks cheap) 2. the slow death of gba (also bad, not that i play gba's anymore it just looks crappy being so empty and never being able to add a rumble pack or gameshark, that ghero thing, ect.) 3. i liked the look of the ds lite on top, the matte finish looks cheap (personally id get a skin or just rub the he!! out of the top cause we all know that stuff will eventually wear away) 4.CHANGING THE FREKIN CHARGER AGAIN!! 5.i liked the volume being on the bottom, but maybe this will solve the issue of sound accidentally being turned up 6. Cameras, well that would be fun 4 a few minutes but those are just a mistake in my opinion. 7. downloads, good as long as they don't become dependent on them for any good game releases. if they play it like the wii shop channel that would be fine. 8. the memory card slot, also good. i hope you can install your downloaded games and such on the card and can play them from the card on anyone's ds. also hope you can set the wallpaper with your pictures. 9. the stylus & screen, ehh they are about the same but a little bigger each time. no complaints. unless you were someone who got a cool looking extra stylus cause it wont fit. 10. finally, the menu. the ds and the lite were good. (besides having to power 4 any setting changes). i don't like this setup. maybe there's a way to set it like the other 2, but i just don't like this.
i was also wondering about the screen. Is this one resistive or capacitive? Because it looks better color wise, and the video had him using it somewhat easily at times without the stylus.
MY RATING; Style Ds **** / Ds lite ***** / Dsi ** Features Ds **** / Ds lite **** / Dsi **** Durability: Ds **** / Ds lite *** / Dsi *** Overall Ds **** / Ds lite **** / Dsi ***
No thanks i guess il stick with my ds, maybe get a lite, but im not going after this one.
Actually, Matthew. I am Over 8... I use photoshop a lot and I admit i use the camera for 10 minutes... AN HOUR. The Photo stuff is cool, with the Graffiti how you can draw on your face. Resemblance, where it analyses your faces to tell you how alike you look. Face Merge & Morph is good too! I LOVE MY DSI! I rate it 5 star. I would know, i recently bought one in england for £150! So yeah, my review. And... you can play music on! FAB
